My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).

Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

As per the computer's behavior, it still took a long while to boot up, and is kinda slow, but I will be updating you on any other weird behavior while waiting for your comments.

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:

Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps

This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

TomK, Thanks for the heads up regarding the BACKDOOR TROJAN. But, was this possible even though Zone Alarm, AVG, Spywareblaster, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Windows Defender were installed? So far, we haven't come across anything that may raise eyebrows regarding our bank accounts, or other login/password related sites, but will be more vigilant now, besides taking the precautions you recommend. I will like to go ahead and try to clean up if possible, will like to leave the reformatting as a last resource. As per the ComboFix: disabled firewall, avg and spywareblaster; ran the installer, but it closes and displays a message saying that "prep.com" closed. I have attached a word file with a screen image of the error displayed. Will wait for further instructions. Thanks.

oreofudge, You are the second person in two days with that error. The other person was running AVG also. Wonder if it's related? I'm going to try to find out what's going on before we do anything more with ComboFix. Please turn your security programs back on until I get back to you and we are ready to try again.

No problem with the ComboFix program. The other operator went back in and "RE-disabled" AVG and it worked.

I just noticed that you also have some Norton (Symantec) files showing.

Click on Tools.
Select Advanced Settings.
In the left hand pane, scroll down to "Resident Shield".
In the main pane, deselect the option to "Enable Resident Shield."
To re-enable AVG 8 after we are done, please select "Enable Resident Shield" again.

Close all programs except for HijackThis.
Click on Fix checked
A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Then

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
- Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
  Archives
  Mail databases
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

TomK, Ran Hijack as you suggested, and also Kaspersky, but after a couple of hours, it seemed to have finished the scan, but wasn't able to save the report after clicking the "save report as" button. Should I run it again? Also, I haven't made a new Hijack report after the clean up, should I restart before doing it, or is it ok to do it without restarting. I wont close anything while you answer back…

oreofudge, I hate to put you through a multi-hour scan again but I'd certainly feel better if I knew what the report said. Did you have the opportunity to see what, if anything it found? Please reboot and then get me a new HijackThis log.

No worries. The scanner stopped, or from what I remember it seems to have finished, but never showed like an ending window, but it certainly ended. The box where the report should be shown, never showed anything, and when I hit the "save report as" never took me anywhere. During the scans though I saw two numbers in red, 3 on top and 11 in the bottom, but don't remember what exactly they meant, threats or infected files, didn't tell me an exact file name or threat, but those were the numbers showed during the scans, besides the number of total files. If you prefer to run it again, I could, you're the boss. I will wait before rebooting.
