Hi. got a virus that is stopping me from installing certain programs especially HijackThis so it took me forever to get a hijack this log created. whenever i try and download hijackthis from this website the file is saved without the .exe extension. i can rename the file and add .exe to the end but when i run it the install window pops up then dissappears again. i've had to run an online scanner called Deckards System Scanner which somehow has hijackthis built in so i have included the log file below. if you could tell me how to install the program that would be great(i have tried installing it in safe mode also) The pc generally just freezes and slows down alot, internet explorer shutsdown randomly especially when i try to go to websites like this (currently typing on my laptop) and when searching for virus software in google, it also redirects me to random websites and has the odd popup. i haven't really noticed any files that have been deleted or currpted yet. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me on this. cheers

Hello and welcome to Posted Image

Please be advised, as I am still in training, all my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advice.
This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

I am checking over your HJT log now, I will post back shortly with instructions.
Hello pinman

First lets try and get ComboFix to install…

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
* Tools->Options->Main tab
* Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

[external image: Posted Image]

[external image: Posted Image]

3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
5. Close any open browsers.
6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
———————————————————–

* Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
* Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled.
The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
———————————————————–

* Close any open browsers.
* WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
* Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
* If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

———————————————————–
7. Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
8. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
9. Please post the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

In your next post I would like to see

  • Combo Fix log
and please advise how your computer is running at the moment.
hi, thanks for the fast reply. i've carried out the scan and the result is below however i had trouble disabling avg. everytime i started the combofix program it told me avg was active but it was not showing as an active program on the taskbar so could not get to the avg control panel to disable it. so i then tried to uninstall it completely from add/remove programs but the unistall window would disappear as soon as it poped up, i then deleted the avg folder and all files and rebooted and it still told me avg was active. i then ended any avg processes i could find in the task manager but still combofix reported it as active lol. after running combo-fix the system has settled down slightly with no shutdowns and no web redirects/popups….yet. any idea of next step?

Hi pinman

First you need to re-install your antivirus, If you had too much trouble with AVG you may wish to consider removing that entirely and downloading and installing one of these other excellent products:

AVG removal tool available HERE

Alternate Antivirus products (NOTE: Install only ONE antivirus)

Avira AntiVir

Avast

NEXT

Please do this:

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box, put your mouse cursor at the very beginning of the text and then hold down the left button and drag your mouse so that all of the text is highlighted. Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

DirLook::
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\2057974417

Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{ef9c5434-ea30-11dd-be44-000e505ede23}]

Rootkit::
c:\windows\system32\2516cf8d910d248cd0e1998a032055ac.sys
c:\windows\system32\_2516cf8d910d248cd0e1998a032055ac.sys_.vir

Driver::
2516cf8d910d248cd0e1998a032055ac

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad. To do this click in the blank page so that your cursor is flashing there and press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save …

[external image: Posted Image]

* Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
* ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
* When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

In your next reply I need

  • Combofix log

  • Also advise how your computer is running now
hi thanks again for the fast reply. first off i used the avg removal tool to try and get rid of avg and it said removal was successfull but it still seems to be remnants of it as windows security centre keeps popping up with (avg 7.5etc.. is out of date and also combo fix is reporting avg is still running when i start the scan. on the avg removal tool log, it runs down looking for all the avg files to remove and returns a file not found fault after every try. because of this i haven't yet installed a new antivirus.

as for how the pc is running it is pretty much back to normal. i've had no real lockups/redirects but i've only really used it to run these few scans you've asked me to do but it's still an improvement on before.

KillAll::

Folder::
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\2057974417

File::
c:\windows\system32\2516cf8d910d248cd0e1998a032055ac.sys

Driver::

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";

Please also advise how your computer is running now.

Hi pinman

Still some more work to do, so stay with me.

Please download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.
Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.
**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any
"<— ROOKIT" entries unless advised!
If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click NO
  • In the right panel, you will see a number of boxes that have been checked … leave everything checked and ensure the Show all box is un-checked.
  • Now click the Scan button.
    Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

  • Post the contents of GMER.txt in your next reply.

Hi pinman

Starting to look better….

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <– very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.

NEXT

See if you can now download the latest version of Trendmicro's Hijackthis to your desktop.

Double click the downloaded program to install it
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe

Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit >Copy and Paste the new log into this thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet.

I should also advise you to uninstall Deckard's System Scanner. That tool has been pulled from use and should no longer be used on your system.

You should also try and reinstall your antivirus - download a fresh copy and reinstall - it sounds as though your version became corrupted and could not be uninstalled properly.
AVG LINK
  • Do not scan with AVG at this time - I would like to do an online scan instead.

This scan can take several hours or longer, please be patient. You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable your resident antivirus and antispyware protection.

Please scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner or from here

  •
  • Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
    •
    • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

    • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:

Hi Pinman,

Good news - your computer looks clean :thumbup:

Just some minor tidying up to do.

Your Java is out of date, so it is now a security vulnerability.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

Good news from here on in, the newest Java's will overwrite the old, so the old versions won't need to be removed manually any more.

Now we need to clean up our tools:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the ..X and the /U, it needs to be there.

[external image: Posted Image]

Now download ToolsCleaner2 to your desktop and run it (by A.Rothstein & Dj Quiou)
  • Click the Pt. Restauration button and press OK to the prompts.
  • Click the Corbeille button and press OK to the prompt.
  • Click the Fichiers temp button and press OK to the prompt.
  • Click the Recherche button and let it run ( it may look like it freezes but let it continue )
  • Once it is done click the Suppression button and let it remove anything it finds.
  • Close the program

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.
  • Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
    This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
  • SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX, it immunizes your PC against them.
  • SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
    Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program ( eg : TeaTimer, Windows Defender ) or there will be a conflict.
Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

For Firefox, I highly recommend these add-ons to keep your PC even more secure.

  • NoScript - for blocking ads and other potential website attacks
  • McAfee SiteAdvisor - this tells you whether the sites you are about to visit are safe or not. A must if you do a lot of Googling

Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories.
This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.
  • Recovery Console - Recent trends appear to indicate that future infections will include attacks to the boot sector of the computer. The installation of the Recovery Console in the computer will be our only defense against this threat. For more information and steps to install the Recovery Console see This Article. Should you need assistance in installing the Recovery Console, please do not hesitate to ask.
  • Please read the guide by Rorschach112 on how to prevent malware and about safe computing here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.
