Is the hard drive space issue actually a contributing factor to overall performance?
Probably not too much, although you probably cannot even do a defrag, because space is so low. I suppose if it gets any smaller it could affect the paging file/swap file. You would get probably more bang for your buck by adding another 512mb of RAM.
We will now remove the tools you used. Also, I'll give you some advice on staying clean in the future, but you don't have any space to put these programs right now, so I would hold off until you do. For you it's more important to avoid the cracks and keygens, along with P2P.
Time for some housekeeping- Click START then RUN
- Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following (again, wait till you add some space):
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some free and evalutation versions that provide
better security than the Windows Firewall.
Comodo
Outpost Firewall
