Hi,

Since a few days I have a trojan.vundu.H infection whih I cannot remove. I still have malware popups!

I have tried Malwarebytes' anti-malware, Spy hunter and Spyware docter to remove it.
At the moment only malwarebytes always detects 3 infections this is the log for the removal (this was not a fullscan btw, but a fullscan never removes these files permanently):

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.33

However as soon as I do another scan with malwarebytes' the registry enties are back. Sometimes it finds more files which it can remove but never the above 3.

When I start up the computer I get an error regarding rundll:
"Error loading C:\windows\system32\wumagife.dll the specified module could not be found"

Hi flash2002 and welcome to the forums here at WTT.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply. Please also post an updated HijackThis log and let me know how it's running.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

On startup I still get the rundll error:
"Error loading C:\windows\system32\wumagife.dll the specified module could not be found"

After making the initial post malwarebytes also found trojan.vundu ,trojan.agent and malware.trace
spyware doctor found trojan.virtumonde

After running combofix I haven't had any antivirus 360 antivirus 2009 popups yet.

{edit} just as I wrote this I got a popup for antispyware scanner{edit}
Still more work to do. You should really think twice about the use of cracks and keygens. I can pretty much guarantee that's how you were infected here. Also P2P and Torrent use is one of the most high risk online activities you can do. I would advise avoiding it in the future, unless you don't mind getting re-infected so badly.

1. Open Notepad

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
c:\windows\system32\1.tmp
c:\windows\system32\2A.tmp
c:\windows\system32\29.tmp
c:\windows\system32\ersvc32.dll

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\2070e0a4517]

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

[external image: Posted Image]

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.

The other I should mention is you do not appear to have any Antivirus program. Is there a reason for this? There are several good free for home use Antivirus programs. I would recommend you install one ASAP.

AVG AntiVirus
Avast Antivirus Home Version–Free
Antivir Personal - Free

It started with downloading an mp3 file from limewire. I then tried several free spy/malware removal tools. Unfortunately spywaredoctor will detect spyware for free but not remove it, and normally I would have bought it straight away I was afraid that my credit card info might be stolen. So stupidly I tried a keygen… which hasn't made it any better (not sure if it's worse either….)
Anyhow I bought the software on a different computer a day later…. it also has an antivirus engine in it…

Learned my lesson I guess….
Hi,

Anyhow I bought the software on a different computer a day later…. it also has an antivirus engine in it…

Sorry didn't notice before it included the AV, so ignore my note about that.

Learned my lesson I guess….

Sometimes the hard way is the best way….

Let's continue with making sure you are clean.

First, use Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files,
cookies, cache, ect…

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'd like for you to run this next online scan to check for remnants or anything that might be hidden.
The below scan can take up to an hour or longer, please be patient.
*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner or from here
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
  • Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition
    files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
    * Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
    * Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
    * Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select:
Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in
your reply.
Computer seems to run faster, however yesterday I tried to do the kapersky scan but the update download timed out every single time. Today it did work and it found some threats which seem to be quarentined?!?
Hi,
Those files Kaspersky found are in the combofix quarantine, and we'll clean those out now.
Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Install Winpatrol -
Use Winpatrol to take control of your PC and provide another layer of security.
Help file and tutorial can be found Here

Use IE-SPYAD with Zoned Out -
Zoned Out with IE-SPYAD will block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. Instructions for set up and use can be found at the websites.
NOTE: Works with IE only.

Block unwanted parasites with a custom hosts file -
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

I'll leave the thread open a few days in case you have questions or issues.

Regards,
Dave
