[Resolved] AV reports Trojan.Vundo - HJT Log

Below is a copy of my HiJackThis Log. Stupidly, I infected my computer by opening a popup PDF in Adobe titled "1.pdf" which I believe exploited a buffer overflow type bug in Adobe. I typically use FoxIt reader instead of Adobe, but I wasn't even thinking when I opened the file. I have Symantec Antivirus on my computer. It picks up files called "Trojan.Vundo" I believe. I notice there are lots of extra DLLs that I don't need. Besides some error messages when I start my computer, and the occasional pop up, there does not seem to be TOO much hindering my computer, but I would like to get it cleaned. I also can't load some websites, notably Hotmail and Facebook. Please see below:

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply. Please also post an updated HijackThis log and let me know how it's running.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Looking a lot better, but still some work to do. Looks like this thing may have been infected for some time now.

1. Open Notepad

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

First, use Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files,
cookies, cache, ect…
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

I'd like for you to run this next online scan to check for remnants or anything that might be hidden.

Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:

Click on: Save Report As
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select:
Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save

Hi,

Almost there I think. A couple of things to address…

You can empty out the Norton quarantine folder.

Your version of Java is outdated.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder

Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
Accept any prompts.
Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.

Save it to your desktop.
Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).

Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

Close OTMoveIt3

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Post a new HijackThis log also and let me know how it's running.

Thanks for all the help, hopefully this is the last one and it's looking good! The computer is definitely running better. I had gotten an AV pop up saying Trojan.Vundo again yesterday while still working on the Kapersky scan, but that's the last issue I saw and the computer is definitely running better. I am able to load Facebook and Hotmail which I wasn't able to do before, and there don't seem to be any more pop ups. Any other questions or tasks? Again, thanks so much for your help…!!

Ugh, OK… I rebooted my computer, and on startup, I got an AV pop up saying "Trojan.Vundo" found in "C:/system volume information/_restore([bunch of numbers]" The file name was A0120560.dll Is that not indicated in the HiJackThis log…?

Hi,

No worries, that's a restore point and we'll clean those out now, along with cleaning up after the tools we used.

Time for some housekeeping

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

The above procedure will:

Delete the following:
- ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
- VundoFix backups, if present
- The C:\Deckard folder, if present
- The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
Reset the clock settings.
Hide file extensions, if required.
Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
Reset System Restore.

Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
Click on the CleanUp! button
A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to rech the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
Click Yes to beging the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Now let me know how it's running, and if all is well hopefully you should be good to go.

Great, glad it's running better and you are very welcome.

In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Install Winpatrol -
Use Winpatrol to take control of your PC and provide another layer of security.

Use IE-SPYAD with Zoned Out -
Zoned Out with IE-SPYAD will block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. Instructions for set up and use can be found at the websites.
NOTE: Works with IE only.

Block unwanted parasites with a custom hosts file -

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.
