I am having trouble with my PC as it looks to be infected.

Started with CiD popups in browser.

Now seems to be getting worse.

Any help would be appreciated.

Here is log file.

Welcome to the Forums. My name is Bob and I will be helping you.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.
  • DO NOT be installing new programs while you run Hijackthis.
  • If I do not hear from you in 5 days from my last post this topic will be closed.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post the contents of that log.

If you accidently close it you may find it here.
    Start -> All Programs -> Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware -> Logs

Bob4,

OK. different problem now. When I log in, my desktop icons and taskbar begin disappearing and reappearing every 5 seconds. When I try to execute explorer it brings it up and then closes it immediately. I can only use Task Manager to execute some commands.

The system is not allowing me to Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

Here is current HJT log which I could run in Safe Mode :

Well the good news is something has finally showed up in your logs.

If you haven't yet I do not need those scans I asked for at this point. If you have them that's OK too.
We are going to do something different.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

Remember all HJT logs are done in NORMAL mode.
Bob4, I downloaded the combofix using another computer and am having trouble getting this to install. When I try to install this, the installation does not start. It appears the install is stopping due to the explorer.exe crashing of the desktop icons and taskbars. These are disappearing and reappearing every 5 seconds and I cannot get the combofix.exe file to initiate the install in this 5 second period. Any ideas?
Delete the combofix you have now..

I want you to redownload combofix again.
This time before you save it I want you to rename it to mark.exe.
This must be done before you download it.

http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
Great. Renaming it to mark.exe worked. Here are the logs:

If you still have S&D fix you do not need to re-download it.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

  • Restart your computer in safe mode:

Heres how if you don't know . If you do know how skip this blue section.

  • During startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.

  • Once in safe mode
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

LIMEWIRE !! Bad move having a P2P program installed.
It's not so much the program but it's what gets downloaded with such things.
I would seriously consider uninstalling it about now.

You are using an older vulnerable version of Adobe Acrobat Reader {{{user's ver.}}}}. Please go here to download Adobe Acrobat Reader 9…

When you have finished installing the Acrobat Reader, please go to Add/Remove Programs and verify that there are no versions listed other than Acrobat Reader 8. If you find older versions, remove them.

In your next reply I would like to see:
    • A new HJT log
    • The report from Combofix
    • The report from Malwarebytes.
    • The report from S&D fix

I notice Nortons is not up to date. If your going to pay to have it updated that's fine. If not let me know and we will get rid of that and get you an anti virus installed that will work. Having an anti virus out of date is almost useless.
Hi Bob4,

Ok..looks like we are getting closer. The windows explorer appears stable.

I am contemplating not renewing Nortons. Do you have suggestions on an anti virus that will work.

Thanks so much for all your help with this

Finished!
It's your call to keep Norton or not. In my own experience, Norton would not be my first choice. If you decide to keep it you need to get it updated today. You can see how easy it is to become infected without a current Anti Virus program.

If you decide to remove it…
Start by

1. Downloading one of these but do not install it yet. Just choose 1.

Avast
Make sure you register Avast with them or it will quit working after 2-4 weeks.
Once registered they give it to you free for a year.

Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic This is free also.

2. Disconnect from the internet.
3. Using add remove programs Uninstall Norton Internet Security
4. Now install the new Anti Virus program.
5.Reconnect to the internet.

FIREWALL
You should really consider a good software Firewall.

A few words on Microsofts firewall in XP . It only works in one direction. Incoming.
That means if something gets by it you would never know it was trying
to contact the internet.
Example: A bad program installs itself. You would never know it was contacting the internet.
Downloading other nasties and so forth.

If you decide to run one of these you should be certain Microsofts firewall is disabled.
To disable it.

I will list a few free firewalls for you. These are good (free) firewalls:

Never run 2 firewalls together. They will interfere with each other.
So just download and install one!

Firewalls
Comodo If choosing this one be sure to UNCHECK install ask tool bar during installation,

Sunbelt Personal Firewall

Online armor Firewall

Get this done and post back a new HJT log and let me know things are still OK.
Next we clean up a bit and you can get on with your life.
