Thanks again for your help.
Hi tmbMATRIX,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Tomk,
Thanks for the quick response. I ran the requested scans this morning and results are posted below. The computer in question seems to be running fine, BUT the HD is still running constantly, which was original issue. FYI, since the original post late last year, our credit card was compromised and we weren't sure if this system might have been the culprit as we did some online banking and holiday purchases with it. We have ceased this actively until after we finish cleaning up the system with you.

tmbMATRIX,

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response.

Here is some information on the trojan you have. Based upon your recent experience, I'd say it's likely that here is the culprit.
Tomk, Thanks for the information. I'm afraid this sounds serious. Can you show me where in the HJT Log you found this "backdoor trojan", or are you suggesting this problem based on my belief that my system was compromised? I'm not sure this actually happened, but if you see something I will address it. Other than this problem. does the HJT Log indicate any other problems that we can correct together on this system? I will consider reformating and reinstalling if absolutely necessary, but I'd like to complete the current clean cycle first…OK? Going forward, I'd like to ask your recommendation about securing our home network based on where we are at right now. The following is a list of our system and basic configuration. A couple of simple questions: 1) Are the anti-virus programs we are using adequate enough to thwart backdoor trojan or worse attack in the future…or…do we need another application or level of protection? 2) We do share folders and printers across these systems. What can I do to ensure a virus/trojan/malware can't infect our entire network? We basically share specific folders with full permissions and no passwords..does this open the rest of each system to attack? Is there a simple set of instructions that you can point me to for security shared resources.? 3) Can I submit our other 5 systems to "What the Tech" for analysis and cleaning? We have a Linksys wired router connected to cable modem with 4 total systems wired in and a 5th and 6th system wired in via a wireless router. All of the systems are running Windows and anti-virus software with a variety of configurations: System 1 - AVG Free and the Windows Firewall System 2 - The system in question here….AVG Internet Security 8.0 and it's Firewall (Window firewall disabled). System 3 - Son 1 - AVG Internet Security 8.0 and it's Firewall (Window firewall disabled). System 4 - Son 2 - McAfee Internet Security System 5 - Wireless Laptop - AVG Internet Security 8.0 and it's Firewall (Window firewall disabled). System 6 - Son 1 - Wireless Laptop - Norton Internet Security Thanks again for the help. I know what I'm asking above may be a lot, but if it is beyond your scope and you know of any online information resources that can help us secure our home system that would help. To be honest, my head really spins when trying to keep track of how to configure ALL of our systems securely.
tmbMATRIX,

Well, I'm a little embarassed to say that I thought I was going to respond to your request by showing you where this backdoor trojan shows in your log. However, as I wrote it up I found that I had in fact apparently let your described situation influence my research. The file msconf.dll is an indicator of the trojan I referenced. However, it would show up as an O2 entry. On your computer it is an O4 entry that is related to NetMeeting and is completely legitimate. Again I apologize.

That takes me to the other end of the spectrum with your log. I don't see any sign of malware. The only issue that I see that needs addressed is you appear to have a remnant of Symantec (norton) anti-virus.

Use the link below to see how to run the Norton Removal Tool

Now, to start with a general answer to your questions, I suggest you read this: Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing.

In my opinion, you have fairly decent protection installed. Also remember that you gain a firewall with your router. This helps protect you from outside threats.

Trojans usually can't migrate from one system to another. They have to be "invited" by transferring the file and running on the new machine. The risk isn't really much greater for a networked machine than for a single machine. You have to "allow" it on your machine.

The risk for networks is worms. They will attach to network shares and spread throughout the system. Luckily, they aren't as prevalent.

I know of no way to spread trojans by sharing a printer. No program is ran on the host computer so no infection should be spread.

Alot of experts will tell you that windows firewall is just not adequate. I agree that there are "better" firewalls. However, because you also have a hardware firewall in your router, I believe it is adequate.

If it were my system, I would add Malwarebytes to each system specifically for spyware protection. It doesn't run automatically. Each user of the respective computers would need to update it and run it once a week.

Then I would probably add Spywareblaster to each and I might install Winpatrol. At that point I'd call it good. :)

And finally, yes you can submit logs from your other computers. You can either start a new thread for each computer, or if you prefer you can post an HJT log here for each of them one at a time. In fact, I think we are done with this one so, if that is what you'd like to do, go ahead and download ATF and Malwarebytes along with HijackThis to the second computer. Run ATF, then Malwarebytes and then post the Malwarebytes report here along with a HijackThis log.
