Hello!

I'm having trouble getting MS security updates (automatic) and receive the error 1058 after trying to fix the problems (unable to enable automatic updates) on the Start menu. Slower system, some malaware pop up problems about the computer's registry. A scan shows quarantined trojans including one named downloader and bloodhound. I ran an older version hijack this scan under a different name for hijack this and 02s showed up when they originally didn't. Here is the log. I appreciate your help. Thanks-hecrod

Here are the 02s showing up on the old version:

Hi ken 545, Thanks for your expertise.. Should I also fix any hidden 02-BHOs by using a different name to Hijack This or will the R0, 020 and Malwarebytes do the trick? At this point, I'll run the fix as suggested. Thanks, hecrodfnp
Hello ken545!

Looks like Automatic Windows updates is back up again. No more popups and IE running smooth. Good job. I've attached the logs for HiJackThis and MBAM.

Quick questions:

Do I get rid of Norton? What's the best program out there, that won't slow the system down and still get the bugs?

I have SpyBot old version; what's the best cleaning system now?

Do I have to get rid of anything on file now? Do I keep MBAM? Do I run it often, if I do?

Again, thanks for your expertise. I appreciate your work.

Good Morning,

Malwarebytes is the free version and yours to keep, check for updates and run it once awhile. You can go into the Quarantine folder and delete it all, nothing it removed you want to keep.

As far as AV, you will find that what one program finds another misses, its your call to keep Norton, I have it on three of my systems and am happy with it.

Spybot Search and Destroy, you can remove it from the Add Remove Programs and install the newer version here, but don't do that until we're done
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

The infection you had that prevented the updates may have left more files and reg entries, lets run Combofix to make sure there is nothing else to remove.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Hi ken545! Thanks for answering the quick questions. I downloaded ATF and ComboFix. I ran the ATF and it cleared everything; I thought I did all I needed to do with the anti-virus disabling for running ComboFix, but kept getting a warning message that the Symantec scan was still activated. I read the links to disable Symantec and did as suggested; I got the icon to show 'disabled' but I keep getting the ComboFix message. Is it still safe to run ComboFix? hecrodfnp
Hi,

You can try running it in Safemode

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode with Network Support
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode
Hi ken545,

Ran the ATF and ComboFix as instructed. Just FYI, ComboFix in safemode still detected AV scanning after I thought I disabled it. It ran for about 10min but produced a log. On reboot, computer did a Chkdsk scan and deleted some files?? Doesn't seem like anything out of the ordinary.

Anyway, here is the ComboFix and HJT log for your review. What do I do with ATF and ComboFix programs?

Thanks again,
hecrod

Looking good

First go to your Control Panel and click on the Java Icon ( looks like a little coffee cup ) and click on About and make sure its Version 6 Update 11, if not then click on the Update tab and update it, then you can remove previous versions via the Add Remove Programs. Outdated versions of Java sometimes lets this garbage in.

ATF Cleaner <– Yours to keep, run it now and then to clean out the clutter.

Malwarebytes <– Yours to keep also, check for updates and run a scan now and then.

Hijackthis <—Your call, hopefully you won't need it again, if you do you can redownload it

Combofix <—Is not a general cleaning tool, just run it with supervision or you can bork your system

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

  • How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
  • Tutorial for System Restore <– Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 3 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
Ken
ken545, I'll run the programs as suggested. thanks for all your work. I know it doesn't necessarily come with cash compensation, but if it means one cent, you got my appreciation and respect. take care, hecrod
Hi ken545,

I didn't think I would have to write you on this same topic, but I'm having a few glitches that maybe you can help me sort out.

After running the last instruction (uninstalling ComboFix), my computer started shutting itself off. This didn't happen that same day, but when I started using it a day later. I would reboot and it would take me to a screen indicating "Pri Master Hard Disk- S.M.A.R.T. capable -status bad-backup and replace." If I even was able to continue to desktop, it would suddenly shut down.

What do you think?

Thanks,
hecrod
hecrodfnp,

I had some techs review this thread and they feel that its a possible hard drive failure and not anything the scans removed.

Some quotes

From you

On reboot, computer did a Chkdsk scan and deleted some files?? Doesn't seem like anything out of the ordinary.

From one of the techs

"Pri Master Hard Disk- S.M.A.R.T. capable -status bad-backup and replace

is typical of a hard disc failure due to bad sectors
get him to boot to RC if it will get that far & then run

chkdsk

see if that works for long enough for him to backup his data so he can buy a new HD

More info for you, it seems that the hard drive may be in the process of failing.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=P…amp;btnG=Search

http://www.msfn.org/board/hard-disk-drive-…ml&p=458595

Can you boot to the Recovery Console ? If so let it run and then do a chkdsk

If no go post in one of these windows forums, there more adapt at working on issues like this
