My desktop computer has been infected by some nasty malware thats hiding out in my registry. Ad-Aware first picked up on it yesterday, and doesn't seem to be able to kill it. I tried going back to AVG, but it too could only detect, not destroy it. (By detect not destroy I mean every program I've used thus far has detected it, but whenever it tries to delete or quarantine the object it fails to) I've looked through my registry searching for the thing and I can't find it myself, I did find part of it lurking in my /h and I mutilated it. (an old file wiper program) but the thing is still running somewhere. Its also multiplying as Ad-aware and spybot are both picking up more entries than they did yesterday, and System Mechanic doesn't even pick up on it so it seems pretty serious…

I'd rate my computing experience as above average but I've never run into something like this… so far it hasn't done anything too malicious, just spamming me ad sites which I can block pretty easily but they're still annoying…. Spybot is also picking up a lot more than ad-aware as its running right now, but i'm not sure how effective its going to be at killing it all off since everything else has failed thus far.

Well anyway, here is my HJT log file:

I know the registry entry names of the thing but I can't seem to find them… which is odd and slightly worrisome for me. Well anyway, please let me know if you need any other information but the HJT file should be enough. Any ideas? btw Ad-Aware picks it up as Virtumond, something I've never heard of and I've 'been around the block' plenty of times so to speak…

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.
  • DO NOT be installing new programs while you run Hijackthis.
  • If I do not hear from you in 5 days from my last post this topic will be closed.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.
Yes, I'm sorry for the delay. The infection is on an older desktop at home and I'm off at College on the weekdays but hopefully I can get everything cleared up while I'm home for this weekend. New log files coming up…
I've run into some trouble… while operating Combo Fix it tells me that avg is still active and scanning, but I've turned off avg, and all other anti-virus/firewall programs i have…. I can see avg running in my process list although I've turned it and automatic scans/updates off. The process will not end when I tell it to through task manager. I tried uninstalling avg but halfway through the uninstallation the program stalled and I get an error message telling me it cannot "update the registry" or some such and avg fails to uninstall. I also tried booting into safe mode to remove the anti-virus program, but my computer stalls halfway through the boot and fails to boot in safe mode… So I'm afraid to run combo fix as it still tells me avg is running and I've tried everything I know to make it stop so I'm lost here. Any ideas? I'm fairly close to just reformatting the computer…
To disable AVG8

AVG 8
Please open the AVG 8 Control Center, by right clicking on the AVG 8 icon on task bar.

* Click on Tools.
* Select Advanced.
* In the left hand pane, scroll down to "Resident Shield".
* In the main pane, deselect the option to "Enable Resident Shield."

NOTE:
To re-enable AVG 8, please select "Enable Resident Shield" again.

If that gives you an issue go to add/remove programs and see if it has an option to repair.
I've run into another problem. I've gotten AVG taken care of… but now apparently something called Eset Nod 32 is still active. I think its some old anti-virus program that computer had a long time ago… but it was uninstalled a very long time ago, and I've searched the computer looking for any residue of it and there are no existing files of that program so I have no idea why combo fix thinks its active. Its also not showing up in the process list.
Look in add/remove programs for Eset Nod32 and uninstall it if you see it, Then try ComboFix again.

If you can't see it in uninstall programs

Open HJT

this time click on
Misc tools section

then:
Open uninstall Manager
click on save list.
Post that for me.

Download (LINK >>>) Registry Search (<<< LINK) to your desktop.
  • Right click on the compressed RegSearch folder, and choose "Extract All". In the box that pops open, click "Next", then "Next" again, and then "Finish". You now have another RegSearch folder on your desktop.
  • Open the new folder, and double click on regsearch.exe
  • In the top window copy/paste the following line
    • Nod32
  • Click OK and Registry Search will scan your registry for the file(s), and a Notepad box will open with a report.
  • Please save the text file at you desktop and call it found-entries.
Paste the results in your reply

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post the contents of that log.

If you accidently close it you may find it here.
    Start -> All Programs -> Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware -> Logs

    Look for
    c:/program files/Eset

Just let me know if it's there.
When were ready we might as well clean that up too.
