Hello and thanks in advance for your help.

I am experiencing random pop-up ads in Internet Explorer 7 that occur regardless of whether I'm using my web browser. I took a screenshot of my desktop with the pop-ups that I can upload if you need to see it. Unlike many others, I actually know where the problem originated from. My teenage daughter had gotten something on her system that allowed almost nothing to function, and I was trying to begin the process of cleaning it. In the meantime, she desperately needed some school notes from her e-mail. I intended to send the notes to a web e-mail account that she could access from a Linux system, but I guess I was tired and frustrated after 4 hours of just trying to get into her account at all. When I was finally able to forward e-mail, I accidentally sent the notes to my own POP3 e-mail account, and the pop-ups began the second the e-mail downloaded. In the meantme, I've dealt with my daughter's machine by just restoring it, but that is not a good option for my system. I need to remove this malware before it can do real damage.

I've already run Malwarebytes and it quarantined a registry key for Adware.MyWebSearch. A 2nd run of Malarebytes then showed no infection. However, the pop-ups are continuing. Here is my hijack this log:

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Thanks for your response. Here is my ComboFix log. One of the pop-ups actually tried to open when it first started running, but ComboFix seemed to squash it. I'm hoping this means it solved the issue!

Sheri W.,

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
Tomk.

Sheri W.,

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\unprogramDlls.tmp <===this file

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

Please do the same with these two additional files:
    c:\windows\system32\RT_Subclasser.dll <===this file
    c:\windows\system32\DLLLDR.dll <===this file

    Please download SmitfraudFix

    Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
    Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
    Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

    Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

    Also, go through your emails and delete anything you don't need or recognize. Then empty your deleted mail folder.
Hi Tomk,

I'm unable to open the link you posted to http://virusscan.jotti.org. I believe there's a problem with the link itself because I tried to open it from another non-infected machine with the same result. Is this the correct address?

I also wondered if you know how dangerous my problem is at this point. I'm afraid to use the machine much for fear of the consequences. I'm not sending anyone e-mails from it, but how about accessing personal accounts such as banking? Should I hold off?

Also, please let me know if I should proceed with SmitfraudFix if I can't do the virusscan.

Thanks!
Sheri W.,

What happens when you actually put http://virusscan.jotti.org/ in your browser?

Both the link I gave you and the one you posted back work for me. :wacko:

If you can't get to Jotti, then try here: http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html

These places only check the files, they don't remove anything. It is OK to go ahead and run SmitfraudFix.

As far as your danger level, I'm not sure we've found everything so it's a little unknown. Trojan.Win32.Agent.aejy is often responsible for mass mailing to people in your address book. However, I'm not seeing other traces of it so it may just be in an attachement in an email and hasn't actually infected your machine (that's why you should never open an attachment that you don't know about). I believe that AdWare.Win32.SearchIt.t could be a false positive. However, it doesn't appear that you use AOL 9.0 so we will eliminate this tool bar anyway.

I guess the bottom line here is, I just don't know at this point. :blush:
Tomk,

I've attached a screenshot of what I see when I try to reach http://virusscan.jotti.org/. I can reach the other site, so I'll use that one and follow the rest of your instructions.

Again, no surprise that the problem originated in my e-mail since it came from my daughter's machine. I just hope it hasn't been mass e-mailing anyone! :pullhair:

Thanks and I'll post again shortly.
Hi Again,

If it means anything, I've noticed the pop-ups occurring less often. Should I re-boot or anything? It's unclear to me whether anything I've run so far has actually immobilized the Trojan yet.

Thanks,
Sheri W.
Sheri W.,

We have removed minor things only. :wacko:
Smitfraud or Trojan.Zlob is often responsible for pop-ups. Didn't find them on your system though.

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    C:\Program Files\Online Services\AOL90US\comps\toolbar\toolbr.EXE

    Folder::

    Registry::

    Driver::
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Would you please run a scan with your Symantec AV and let me know if it finds anything?

Also, could you let me have another HijackThis log?
Tomk,

Here are all the items you requested. Unfortunately, the pop-ups continued throughout the night while my Norton scan was running, so the problem is not solved yet. I really need this cleaned up since I use this machine for school and have just started a new semester.

Here's my ComboFix log. ComboFix asked to update itself I after my dragged my script onto it, and I thought I should probably allow it to do so. It updated and re-started itself, so I hope this was the right thing to do.

Sheri W.,

Please start your Malwarebytes' program.
Click on the update tab and then the Check for Updates button.
After it finishes, then please run a new scan.
Click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).

Then

Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

  • Right click on gmer.zip and select Extract All….
  • Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
  • Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK.
  • Click Next. It will start extracting.
  • Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.
  • Double click on gmer.exe to run it.
  • Select the Rootkit tab.
  • On the right hand side, check all the items to be scanned, but leave Show All box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard.
  • Open Notepad or a similar text editor.
  • Paste the clipboard contents into the text editor.
  • Save the Gmer scan log and post it in your next reply.
  • Close Gmer.
  • Open Command Prompt by going to Start > Run and type in cmd. Press Enter.
  • In Command Prompt, type in net stop gmer. Press Enter.
  • Type in exit to close Command Prompt.

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.
Tomk,

Sorry for the delay in posting again. I was completely tied up yesterday.

I followed your instructions and came up with nothing from the Malwarebytes' program. Here is the log:

Here is also my Gmer log:

When I followed your last instructions and typed "net stop gmer" at a command prompt after closing Gmer, I received the message "The specified service does not exist as an installed service.". I don't know if that is normal or not.

In the meantime, the pop-ups are continuing.

Thanks,
Sheri W.
