Here is my hijack this log. I have been getting what looks like a Windows platform popup with a message that says it's a security warning and that I need to download default728.js and of course, there is a download button. I click the whole thing off but I am getting nowhere fast.

I am unable to install the newest version because every time I try, I get an error message that pops up and gives me a menu of programs to open hijackthis with! Right, like I am gonna open it in Photoshop or whatever…

I've been tryng to run Trend Micro Free Scan and that either locks up the computer or I get messages that java is disabled or activex is disabled or can't run, etc.

The comptuer is running very slow but I only have 506 MB RAM and will be upgrading to 2 GIG later this week.

Something HAS to be wrong here. It has never been this bad before!

Hi coolcat, welcome to the forum.

Please be advised, as I'm still in training, all my replies will have to be approved by a teacher or expert before I can post them. This may cause some delays, but I will do my best to keep them as short as possible.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
I will post back soon with additional instructions.

Thanks
HI coolcat,

Let's see if we can find out what's going on.

Download Rooter.exe to your desktop
  • Then doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt (Where %systemdrive% is usually C: or the drive that you have installed Windows). Post that in your next reply.

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————

Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt

Please attach the second file; Attach.txt. To attach a file, do the following:
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to insert the attachment into your post
Thanks

Hi Coolcat,

You will need to disable Spybot's Tea Timer function, if it is running, as it may interfere. - this is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labelled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine fully for the changes to take effect.

Sorry for the delay. I can not get SpyBot to do what you ask it to do. I am going to uninstall it for the time being while I do all these scans, then reinstall. I'll be back shortly.
Yes, I'm so sorry. I lost my job on Tuesday and things are very hectic and I'm freaking out. I'll get it done by tomorrow! Thanks for your patience!

You asked what the computer was doing. It has been running very slow, also just hanging and freezing so I have to unplug it to reboot because often, that's the only way I can get it to shut down. I see there was malware found. My son is constantly on MySpace and had downloaded their Instant Message application which I deleted/uninstalled right before I came here and created this thread. Thanks :)
Hi Coolcat,

Yes, I'm so sorry. I lost my job on Tuesday and things are very hectic and I'm freaking out. I'll get it done by tomorrow! Thanks for your patience!

Bummer. That's ok, I'm not going anywhere.

All MBAM found was one stray registry key. Are you still getting that popup?

I need you to check for a file.

Please download FileLook by jpshortstuff from one of these mirrors:
Link 1
Link 2
  • Double-click FileLook.exe to run it.
  • Ensure that the BBCode Ouput checkbox is checked.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:

    C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jp2iexp.dll
  • Click the FileLook button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found at C:\FileLook.txt

Then fix these lines with HJT.

Open HJT, do a system scan only. Checkmark the following lines, if present

Close all other browsers/windows and click fix checked.

We'll see if we can speed you up somewhat. There are a few optional fixes you can do that may improve system preformance. These fixes will not remove the program, will just stop it from starting at startup. A link and some info as to what it does is provided for each.

To impliment the optional fixes, open HJT (hijackthis), run a system scan only. Checkmark the ones you wish to keep from running at startup, close all other browsers/windows and click "Fix Checked"

Do Not fix any other lines, as that may cause problems.

Hi Coolcat,

Any improvement?

You missed an l when you copied C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jp2iexp.dll for the file search. Please rerun FileLook, be sure to copy the entire text.

Then Go here to run an online scannner from ESET:
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner

(Note: You must use Internet Explorer for this scan.)

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is Checked.
  • Click Scan.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. We will need this later.
Please post back with the ESET log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Hi,

No, I didn't *miss* a letter. I did that scan 3 times and checked the exact file extension each time I did it. I have no idea why it did what it did but no matter what I do, when the test results come back (immediately) I can see that the 2nd l is missing from the path and I don't know what else to do about it.
