Last night it seems as though my computer became infected with some sort of malware. The rogue Rapid Antivirus reared its ugly head. Various attempts I've made through the day have been partially successful at eradicating it, but small elements of it seems to be immovable.

When I run a Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware scan, this is the sort of reading I've been getting for the past 12 hours or so:

I try to eliminate the two registry key infections using MBAM. MBAM tells me that the the two keys have been quarantined and deleted. But when I reboot and run the scan again, they seem to have reappeared. This occurs even though I have system restore turned off.

My efforts to resolve this problem have been hampered because the infections seem to be preventing me from undertaking various tasks. For example, simple things like trying to update MBAM, or visit the Kapersky website, or download HijackThis, or even just to visit this website are impossible. This seems to be a problem even when I boot up in safe mode. I'm using my laptop for this communication and any of my other research into the matter.

I understand that the vundo trojan exploits a weakness with an old version of Java. Unfortunately, I can't currently update Java. The admin settings seem to have been altered so that java will not update, and I just don't know how to go about fixing that either.

I have downloaded the following programs to my laptop, and transferred each to the desktop in an attempt to help solve the problem:

VundoFix
VirtumundoBeGone
HijackThis
Updates for MBAM

Running the VundoFix scan finds no problems at all.

I don't think VirtumundoBeGone did anything.

When I managed to update MBAM I found a significant list of problems, but these all seemed to be eliminated by using MBAM - all except for the two identified in the log file above. They seem to be Vundo.

Following the self-help instructions for ridding the pc of Rapid Antivirus, I've installed and used ATF-cleaner, I've run MBAM, I've rebooted the pc and I've scanned again. The results are the same.

Here is the HijackThis log.

I hope this is all in the right form, and that you'll be able to help,

Many thanks in advance for any help you are able to offer.

Chad
Hi chadh, welcome to the forum.

Please be advised, as I'm still in training, all my replies will have to be approved by a teacher or expert before I can post them. This may cause some delays, but I will do my best to keep them as short as possible.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
I will post back soon with additional instructions.

Thanks
Hi chadh,

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please post the combofix log and a new HJT (hijackthis) log in your next reply.

Thanks
As the combofix scan began, I received a warning about rootkit activity. I was told to make note of the following files, as the list may be needed later: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\TDSSpcuu.sys C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\senekadbqsomrv.sys C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSktkl.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSweat.dat C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSurxb.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSlajf.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSoxum.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSxehr.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSnmxh.log C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSqkhc.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSshkx.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSqrdn.log C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSStubv.log C:\WINDOWS\system32\senekasovrnkvn.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\senekaxhfpgnnx.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\senekaajdbhpwl.dll Then the computer went into a long and very slow reboot process. A series of files (including all of those listed above) were deleted. Now the pc is rebooting again. I'll post the log shortly. Chad

I'll post the HJT log in the next reply.

Please let me know if I'm posting the log in the correct format for you. Your first message said it should be "posted in Notepad." I'm not sure is that means I can just cut and paste a slab of Notepad text, or whether I should be inserting Notepad into the post somehow.

Chad

Hi chadh,

Please read the following,

Service_TDSSSERV.SYS

<==Rootkit

Identity Theft

Your system has been infected by one or more Rootkits/Backdoor Trojans.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

Its very possible that anything could have been installed on your computer by the remote attacker, including opening other backdoors and installing rootkits. While we can attempt to clean what we see in your logs, we cannot guarantee that your computer will be completely in the clear since we have no way of knowing that has been done to the computer. Your computer could be completely compromised at this moment. It may be prudent to backup your information, reformat, and reinstall.

More information on Remote Access Trojans can be found here.

I strongly suggest you do the following immediately:
  • Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords – for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

If, however, you decide that the computer is not used for any sensitive work, or if you do not wish to reformat at this time, I can help you clean your computer to the best of my abilities. I must remind you that i cannot guarantee that your computer will be completely clean afterwards since we have no way of knowing what has been done to it.

To help you make your decision, here are a few related articles that i suggest you read:

  • Danger: Remote Access Trojans.
  • When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?
  • How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and Credit Card Fraud?

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let me know what you decide to do in your next post.

Thanks
Holy &%$#*!!! Thanks for helping me out with this. By the sounds of it, the simplest and most sensible thing to do is to reformat the hard drive and reinstall all the software. However, before I commit to going in that direction, I hope you can answer some questions. 1. Is there any way to get an indication of how long this rootkit has been operational? 2. My wife does some very sensitive work from home using a VPN. I presume that the "intruder" may have had access to the information that lies on her work system. Is that right? Is there any chance that the work system is now infected too? I presume that her work system is compromised on some level. 3. Is it possible that I can transfer the infection to others? For example, if we send email with attachments, could this email infect anybody else? 4. Is it possible that a USB key used on the infected computer is now infected somehow in a way that could corrupt other machines on which it is used? 5. If I try to save a bunch of files from the infected computer before it is reformatted, is there any way to ensure that those files are "safe"? Many thanks again for your help. Chad
Hi chadh,

1. Is there any way to get an indication of how long this rootkit has been operational?

The only indication I would have is the date you started experiencing problems and the date of the files. Please note that the file dates may not be entirely acurate. A guess would be the last couple of days, but some malware may have been present prior to that.

2. My wife does some very sensitive work from home using a VPN. I presume that the "intruder" may have had access to the information that lies on her work system. Is that right? Is there any chance that the work system is now infected too? I presume that her work system is compromised on some level

1. It is a possibility but we cannot state that with 100%certainty.

2. It is always a possibility that the rootkit and its companions migrated to the work system either through VPN or a USB portable storage device.

3. We can't presume. All we can state is that your system may not be trustworthy again unless you format the infected system as well as any USB devices that may have been attached to it. If you decide to go this route, keep this system out of the network until you are sure that no other system or attachments have been compromised.

3. Is it possible that I can transfer the infection to others? For example, if we send email with attachments, could this email infect anybody else?

I do not believe the infection you have propagates by e-mail. That is, it's possible for it to arrive as an email, but not attach itself to outgoing mail.

4. Is it possible that a USB key used on the infected computer is now infected somehow in a way that could corrupt other machines on which it is used?

It's entirely possible. As Combofix is capable of detecting and removing this rootkit, I would suggest that you run combofix with the removable devices attached. Run combofix as many time as needed.

5. If I try to save a bunch of files from the infected computer before it is reformatted, is there any way to ensure that those files are "safe"?

Documents, pictures are quite safe. It's the executables that are dangerous. Be sure to scan whatever media you use for transfering your files back onto the computer before you restore them.

I must also advise you that if this a corporate machine or attached to a corporate network in any way that you should contact your IT department with this information. It is their responsibility to clean this up and we can not assume responsibility for corporate systems.

Hope this helps. Please let me know what your final decision is.

Thanks
Thanks again for your answers. At this stage I'm hoping that the infection is only a couple of days old. As my wife hasn't been connected to her work system in that time, and keeps none of the passwords for that system on the computer, that would be mean that the infection should not have spread to her work system. Her firm has been notified, however. Since I was unable to visit relevant webpages through the infected computer, I was forced to download files on the laptop and transfer them via USB drive. I'm hoping that that drive has not been infected, since that may mean that the laptop has been infected as well. I ran combofix on the laptop, and have HJT installed. Should I post log files from my laptop to a separate thread to determine the safety of that computer? I think it would be best for me to reinstall all of my software and start all over again on the infected machine. First, I'll need to round up all of the important files and save them. I have an external harddrive attached to that computer where I can place all of these files. As long as I scan that drive and run combofix on it, all of those files should be safe, right? Should that scan be done before reinstalling the software on the infected computer, or afterwards? The other thing I need to do before I can reinstall is to find the XP disc. While I'm dealing with those tasks, I'd be grateful for any advice you can give me on the reinstallation process. Any advice you can give on an appropriate compliment of anti-virus/anti-malware software to install would also be wonderful. Chad
Hi chadh,

We can continue in this thread if you wish.

If you've all ready ran combofix with that drive connected, there should be no need to later. CF is not a replacement for Antivirus/Antispyware programs. I would do a scan with your av and MalwareBytes Anti-malware before you reinstall your files.

I'd be grateful for any advice you can give me on the reinstallation process.

Any advice you can give on an appropriate compliment of anti-virus/anti-malware software to install would also be wonderful.

You have what looks like a Mcafee suite. It has most of what you need, an antivirus program and a firewall. Add to that a resident antispyware program and a couple of tweeks and you should be about as protected as can be.

This is from my usual closing speech….

Some Recommendations and prevention tips

I suggest you use an antispyware program with real time scanning. These are 2 free ones
Winpatrol OR
Windows Defender

I recommend MalwareBytes Anti-malware for on demand scanning. It's free also.

You should also use Spyware Blaster to help immunize your computer.

settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
