Below is a HiJack This log from my Toshiba laptop. IE& works sometimes, but not others - it seems to just hang up, or not respond at all. I tried FireFox, and it works OK, but prefer IE7. I believe there are other gremlins on this machine also. Please take a look and advise. Thanks

Welcome roncobb

I'm having a look at your log/s now. Please give me a little time to get back to you with instructions.

In the meantime please note the following:
  • Any recommendations made are for your computer problems only and should NOT be used on any other computer.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to. This is very important for several reasons. Here are just two of them:
    1. The tools that we use are very powerful and can cause >>irreparable damage<< to your computer if not used correctly.
    2. Commercial scanners, for the most part can not completely remove some of the more "resistant" infections. This makes it much more difficult to get rid of completely.
  • If you get stuck or are unsure of something please ask for a further explanation, do not guess.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
Thanks

I'd also like to see a list of installed programs so please do this:
Create an Uninstall List
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button
  • Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file
  • When you press the Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file
  • Copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in your next reply
I can generate the uninstall list in HJT as you requested but when I click the save button, HJT aborts - it just shuts down. No Notepad file of the uninstall list is generated. I cannot select the uninstall programs list from the display in HJT, or in the Control Panel Add/Remove window. Is there another way to get this list? I have HJT v 2.02, is that the latest version? Thanks
Ok Ron, don't worry about the Uninstall list for the time being. We'll come back to it.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware here and save to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply
    Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
If you receive an (Error Loading) error on reboot please reboot a second time . It is normal for this error to occur once and does not need to be reported unless it returns on future reboots.

Combofix
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop**

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
A guide to do this can be found here
The ones that need to be closed/disabled are:
    McAfee
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log
.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

New HijackThis log
HI, I got thrgough most of the instructions, but not exactly. I incorrectly ran Combofix before Anti-Malware, but both completed successfully.

I did not update the Malware, since I do not have wireless here for the infected laptop to access. I have been using my desktop, and moving files, logs, etc. via a USB jump drive.

I did not install the Recovery Console, since I was not connected. But I have the original Toshiba recovery disks and will just start over form scratch if something gets screwed up. I have toyed that approach, but wanted to see if I could clean it up with your assistance first.

Below are the logs requested, and also the Uninstall list, which now works.

The laptop now runs faster, but I will need to go to another location to test internet connectivity. But, here are a couple of strange things remaining:

I uninstalled McAfee Security Center prior to running Combofix. It said this was a successful uninstall, and the laptop was rebooted as it asked. But, after running Malware, and then looking at the Uninstall list, McAfee is back in the list. It is also in the ControL Panel uninstall list. I wanted to get it off completly as I intend to find another program to do this stuff. The free McAfee from AOL is no longer offered.

The second strange thing is that everytime I remove the jump drive from the laptop and plug it ino my desktop, there ae three new files that were not copied to the drive. These are hypinit32.exe, autorun.bat and autorun.inf. The bat file runs the hypinit32 program, and that's all. Just before I unplugged the jump drive from the laptop, I checked its contents with My Computer, showing all hidden files, and these progrrans were not there. When I tried to do a "remove hardware Safely", it said the jump dirve was in use. I removed it anyway. Then, first thing when plugged into the desktop, I find that these new files are there. I know hypinit32 is a virus of some sort, but it apparently is not removed by the malware or Combofix. On my desktop, the McAfee finds this and removes it from the jump drive as soon as it is plugged in.

Here are other things which might help.

This laptop is used by my grandson, who does music and other stuff I know not what. The McAfee on it has not worked for a while, so has not been updated. His mother has downloaded sevral other clean-up programs in attempt to fix it. I don't know all of these, but if you discover one, we can remove it with out issue.

I appreciate yor help. I think progress has been made, as the laptop is running beter now - much faster startup, without some of the popups that were coming up.

Thanks,

Ron Cobb

Oops, as I reread the above post, I saw that I had a typo in one paragraph which I need to correct.: The affected paragraph is: "The second strange thing is that everytime I remove the jump drive from the laptop and plug it ino my desktop, there ae three new files that were not copied to the drive. On my desktop, the McAfee finds this and removes it from the jump drive as soon as it is plugged in." This should read: "The second strange thing is that everytime I remove the jump drive from the laptop and plug it ino my desktop, there ae three new files that were NOW copied to the drive. On my desktop, the McAfee finds this and removes it from the jump drive as soon as it is plugged in." The change is in ALL CAPS. "not" becomes "NOW" in the changed paragraph Sorry about that. Ron
Hello roncobb

There's still quite a bit to do here so let's leave McAfee alone until the machine is cleaned up. Once clean we can sort that out & I can make recommendations fro some free Anti-virus programs to replace it.

The Combofix log is showing a lot of open ports on your PC. Do you know anything about them? Gaming, remote desktop programs, P2P?

P2P Warning!
IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

FrostWire

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur.
P2P file sharing used to be fairly safe. That is no longer true. I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.
References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun…protection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm
See Clean/Infected P2P Programs here

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

While in Add/Remove Programs you can also remove the following:
Ask Toolbar

View Hidden Files & Folders Windows XP
To view Hidden Files & Folders do the following:
Click Start
Open My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Select the View Tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm
Click OK

Upload Files for Scanning
Go to VirSCAN or VirusTotal
(Just use one or the other. No need to use both.)

If you use VirSCAN click Browse
In the File Upload box that opens navigate to c:\windows\http.dll, & double click on http.dll
Then click Upload
Wait for scans to finish then copy & paste the results into your next reply

If you use VirusTotal click Browse
In the Choose File box that opens navigate to c:\windows\http.dll, & double click on http.dll
Then click Send File
Wait for scans to finish then copy & paste the results into your next reply

Flash_Disinfector
  • Download Flash_Disinfector here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click to run it
  • You will be prompted to plug in your USB drive. Plug it in
  • Flash_Disinfector will start disinfecting your flash and hard drives. This takes a few seconds. Your desktop will disappear in the meantime
  • When done, a message box will appear. Click OK. Your desktop should now appear. If it doesn't, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
  • Click on File > New Task (Run…). Type in explorer.exe and press Enter. Your desktop should now appear
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder…it will help protect your drives from future infection.

CFScript
Close any open browsers.
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the code box below into it:

File::
c:\windows\system32\edl.dat

Folder::
c:\windows\system32\nScan
c:\windows\system32\spfx

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\active setup\installed components\Prauge DVDRam Version 2.3A]
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Removed FrostWire

Tried to remove Ask Tool Bar. Received message saying that asksbar.dll not found. But, I checked the c:\Program Files\ folder and there is an ASK folder there with some stuff in it.

Could not get VirScan or VirusTotal to work. ??? I copied the c:\windows\http.dll file from the laptop to the usb drive. Moved usb drive to my desktop and tied to upload this file to both. They seemed to run, but generated no results file. Tried twice. Both times the c:\windows\http.dll was deleted from the usb drive. Upon finishing, VirusTotal closed all IE browsers. Is it possible that VirScan found the file infected and just deleted the file from the usb drive?

Can I run Flash_Disinfector from my desktop PC with the usb drive inserted? Recall that I have no internet connection for the infected laptop at this location.

Ran ComboFix with the CF script. Log file below.

Ran HJT, log file below.

Thanks

My apologies… forgot about you lack of Internet connection.

Can I run Flash_Disinfector from my desktop PC with the usb drive inserted?

Yes… definitely do that if you have been using the flashdrive to transfer files from one pc to the other. But also run it on the laptop.

Before we go any further I think it's important that we try & get the Recovery Console installed on the infected computer. First I'd like you move Combofix.exe from your E drive & place it directly onto the desktop.
RECOVERY CONSOLE
Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System (in your case it will be Windows XP Professional SP2)
[external image: Posted Image]
Download the file to your flashdrive & save it as it's originally named
Transfer the file to the infected computer & place it next to ComboFix.exe
[external image: Posted Image]
Now close all open windows and programs, including all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.
  • At the next prompt, click No to exit
    [external image: Posted Image]
Let's try this to upload that file:
The following instructions will require an Internet connection, so you may need to copy the file to a computer with a working Internet connection.
  • Create a new folder on the desktop of your Desktop PC by right-clicking anywhere, scroll down to New then click Folder
  • Name it something like Upload
  • Insert your flashdrive into the infected laptop
  • Copy c:\windows\http.dll, to the flashdrive & remove it from the laptop
  • Insert the flashdrive into the Desktop PC
  • Copy http.dll to the Upload folder you created on your desktop
Upload Files for Scanning
Go to VirSCAN or VirusTotal
(Just use one or the other. No need to use both.)

If you use VirSCAN click Browse
In the File Upload box that opens navigate to your Upload folder, open it & double click http.dll
Then click Upload
Wait for scans to finish then copy & paste the results into your next reply

If you use VirusTotal click Browse
In the Choose File box that opens navigate to your Upload folder, open it & double click http.dll
Then click Send File
Wait for scans to finish then copy & paste the results into your next reply

Once this is done, delete the Upload folder from your desktop.

Fix HiJackThis Entries
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on Do a system scan only
  • Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present):
O2 - BHO: Ask Toolbar BHO - {F0D4B231-DA4B-4daf-81E4-DFEE4931A4AA} - C:\Program Files\AskSBar\bar\1.bin\ASKSBAR.DLL (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: Ask Toolbar - {F0D4B239-DA4B-4daf-81E4-DFEE4931A4AA} - C:\Program Files\AskSBar\bar\1.bin\ASKSBAR.DLL (file missing)

  • Close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
  • Click Yes when prompted
  • Close HijackThis.
CFScript
Close any open browsers.
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the code box below into it:

Folder::
C:\Program Files\AskSBar
c:\program files\FrostWire

And what about those open Ports? Any info on them?

jmw3, I'm trying to do the things you suggest one at a time, and report the results of all actions. But, this is so wierd I wanted to address it straight away.. Trying to get the upload to VirScan done. The http.dll file is like nothing I have even encountered. I copy it to the usbdrive on the infected laptop, and insert the usbdrive into the desktop. I try to copy it to a new folder on the desktop titled "upload." First time, I get a message that I can't copy it, and then IE closes (all instances) and the http.dll file disappears off the usbdrive. I am watching My Computer and this thing just goes away. Second time, I copied the http.dll file on the laptop to the usbdrive. I renamed it to laptophttp.dll, Then I put the usbdrive in the desktop, and try to copy it. Same thing happens. IE closed down. and the file laptophttp.dll disappears from the usbdrive as i watch on My Computer. Don't understand this at all. Somehting is running on the desktop PC which recognizes this dll, shuts down IE and then erases it from the usbdrive. But whatever does this is not recognizing the dll by name. Could it be that McAfee, which I run on the desktop PC is smart enough to do this? I got no notice from them that any action was being taken. Whatever is going on, it is keeping me from having http.dll scanned by VirScan or VirusTotal. Any ideas? I am proceeding with the other instructions you gave in your last post, and will report results soon. Thanks.
OK, here are the ramaining results of actions taken from your last instructions.

1. I could not get Flash_Disinfecter to download to my desktop PC. It seems to download allright to a temporary folder, and then when it tries to copy to the folder I selected (My Documents) I get an error stating that Cannot Copy flash_disinfector, access denied -make sure the file is not in use, or the disk not full to write protected. I ahve over 3GB on the drive, and My Documents is not protected.

I did find a zip file of Flash_disinfector, but have not tried to download it. The host site was a third party site I so not recognize.

2. I have not gotten the Recovery Console down to the laptop yet. I will take the laptop to a site with wireless connectoin and download this. Recall, I have the original mfgr Recovery Disks which came with the laptop, so it all this does not get satisfactory results, I can just Recover to the original state.

3. Attempt to scan c:\windows\http.dll failed as described above.

4. I did the HJT fix of the O2 and O3 lines as instructed. Successful. New HJT log included below.

5. I moved ComboFix to the desktop of the laptop and ran the script you provided. Successful. Log included below.

6. I don't know anything about the open ports. Where can I get info on them. I assume these are from some games that my grandson has played with other players over the internet. Can we just delete them?

Thanks, I really appreciate your effort to get this situation cleaned up. I know that it is not efficient with my laptop not connected, so I apologize that it has been this difficult.

Hello roncobb
Sorry for the delay.

I could not get Flash_Disinfecter to download to my desktop PC. It seems to download allright to a temporary folder

Just to clarify… you cannot save it to or run it from the desktop of your Desktop PC but it will save to a folder. Is that correct?

I don't know anything about the open ports. Where can I get info on them. I assume these are from some games that my grandson has played with other players over the internet. Can we just delete them?

Yes these should be Ok to delete.

CFScript
Close any open browsers.
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the code box below into it:

c:\windows\http.dll

New HijackThis log
jmw3,

Flash_Disinfector. I was trying to download it and store to the "MY Documents" file of the Desktop PC. Tried again wiht same error. It looks like the download worked. I has selected the target file as My Docs, but the system apparently saves it to a temporary file, with an automatic copy to My Documents coming later. This is where if fails. I am uploading a screenshot of the error messages. But, I am no longer seeing the hidden aurotun file and the hypinit.ext file on the usbdrive when on either the laptop of the Desktop PC.

I ran ComboFix with the latest script. Log file below. This script closed all those ports, right?

I ran HJT after all this, log file below.

Things are working much better now. The system boots quickly, and a former issue with display backgrounds has been resolved. I still must take it to a wireless site to see if the IE7 problem has gone away. Will try to do that this evening.

Thanks again for this assistance.

Ron Cobb

Hello roncobb

I'm a little confused here. Has Flash Disinfector been run or not? Probably best to download & save it directly to the desktop of your PC, not to a folder. Then run it.

This script closed all those ports, right?

Yes, but it looks like I missed one.

CFScript
Close any open browsers.

New HijackThis log
I have not been able to download the Flash_Disinfector, so it has not been run on the laptop or the Desktop computers. Tried again to download and save to the Desktop of my desktop PC. Same error message that I attached to my last post. ??? Anyway, the hidden the hypinit.exe and autorun files are no longer showing up on the usbdrive. We must have fixed this with one of the things we already completed.

Ran ComboFix with the script you posted. Log file below.

Downloaded GMER and ran. It didn't find much, as the log file has only two entries. Log file below.

Reran HJT, log file below.

Thanks
