[Resolved] Multiple problems!

I've had problems with multiple tabs opening, corrupt browsers/profile, exceedingly slow in start up, and those are just the ones that come to mind. I've run AVG free, Malwarebytes, Adaware, Windows malware, and tried installing a couple extra firewalls at different times, but they slowed everything to the point the computer basically became unusable. It would take up to two minutes to go from one page to another on the same site, so I removed them.
I have also tried to update through Microsoft, but most times wind up with "time outs"(?)
I'll be honest, I know next to nothing about computers, so any help is really appreciated! Thanks.

Hi sinnead,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Hi, Tomk! Thank you so much. I downloaded Combofix from Link 1, saved, disabled everything, then ran Combofix. One thing I'd forgotten was to stop the autostart of MSN. I shut it down when msn came online. I hope this isn't going to alter anything. Also, IE opened, which I shut down, but had a problem in that it wouldn't close at first. I recieved "windows error"message I get when a window won't close when I want it. I did not send in the error report requested.
I am assuming you want to read the log, so here it is:

sinnead,

It looks like everything worked fine.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
Minor problem. The accept button won't "come on" for me. It says I need Java 1.5 or later, and I have the latest Java update. I believe it's 6 update 10.
sinnead,

It's actually 6 update 11. Try this:

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11…allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Now to Clean out the Java cache:

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. [external image: Posted Image]
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings… button
  • click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave all 3 Checked
    • Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Settings
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Then:

JavaRa …by: Paul McLain and Fred de Vries

Please download JavaRa (Copyright © 2008 RaProducts.org) and unzip it to your desktop.
***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***
Print these instructions…you won't have Internet access during this particular phase!
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English or the appropriate language…and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the JavaRa log, in your next reply.

Now reboot your computer and then go ahead and try Kaspersky without waiting for my reply to the JavaRa report. If it doesn't work, let me know (it happens sometimes, don't know why) and we will run a different online scanner.
My computer will not let me open what I saved to my desktop from the link you gave me. Should I just go through the Kaspersky site and download Java from there, or through the Java site? All it will say is " To open this file, Windows needs to know what program created it", and then gives me the option of looking online(doesn't find anything), or opening it with a program on the computer(error report)
sinnead,

The link doesn't work for you?
It should send you to here: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
That allows you to download JRE 6 update 11 from the first button.

What do you get?
Sorry, I should have gotten back to you last night, but I was just too tired! I downloades everything, and the scan is running right now. As soon as it finishes, I'll post the results before I leave for work.
Here's the scan report: KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7 REPORT Tuesday, January 6, 2009 Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600) Kaspersky Online Scanner 7 version: 7.0.25.0 Program database last update: Tuesday, January 06, 2009 11:51:50 Records in database: 1571110 Scan settings Scan using the following database extended Scan archives yes Scan mail databases yes Scan area My Computer A:\ C:\ D:\ Scan statistics Files scanned 61716 Threat name 1 Infected objects 1 Suspicious objects 0 Duration of the scan 02:04:22 File name Threat name Threats count C:\Documents and Settings\MDG USER\out.0in Infected: Trojan-PSW.Win32.LdPinch.pas 1 The selected area was scanned.
sinnead,

That is a password stealer that was found. It specifically targets online gaming accounts. If you do any online gaming, please take whatever precautions neccessary (change passwords and usernames if possible) to protect your information.

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\MDG USER\out.0in

    Folder::

    Registry::

    Driver::
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

How are things running now?
