Hi,

I guess I have vitrumonde on my computer, and I can't get rid of it - it keeps showing up on AdAware. I ran the vitrumonde fix app that was under self-help, but it didn't find anything. Not sure what to do! Thanks in advance for the help. Occasionally weird windows pop up and some Office installer thing starts up, but that's it.

Hi DeadEndKev

I'm Gary R, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
  • Don't attempt to clean your computer with any tools other than the ones I ask you to use during the cleanup process.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • If you're using XP, you'll need Administrator privileges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • If you're using Vista, it will be necessary to right click all tools we use and select —-> Run as Admistrator

It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations and save it to your Desktop:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

IMPORTANT !!! ComboFix.exe must be run from your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, they may otherwise interfere with Combofix. There are details for disabling many programmes here.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you.

Please include this log in your next reply. ……… (it can also be found at C:\ComboFix.txt)

IMPORTANT
  • Do not use your computer while Combofix is running.
  • Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
  • If you've lost your Internet connection when Combofix has completely finished, re-start your computer to restore it.
If you have any problems with these instructions, a detailed Tutorial for how to use Combofix is available here.

Next

Run a new scan with HijackThis, and post me the log from that as well please.

Looking much better, just a little tidying up and a few questions I need answering.

First

Run a scan with HJT and when finished check the following items (if found).

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {348FE907-249E-4C65-A838-F34A193FE1D1} - (no file)

Now close all open windows and click Fix Checked to remove them.

Next

There's a couple of entries in your HJT log that I can find no definitive information on.

O23 - Service: B-Service - Unknown owner - C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin1\Application Data\Mikogo\B-Service.exe

O23 - Service: Ql10osnip - QLogic Corporation - (no file)

Do you know what programmes these entries are for?

I see you have Party Poker installed on your computer, this is known to sometimes come bundled with undesirable "additions", and may well be how you got infected in the first place, I recommend you uninstall it.

Similarly I see you are using P2P programmes (Bit Torrent). I'd like you to read these Guidelines for P2P Programs I wrote for another forum, where it's explained why it's not a good idea to have them.
My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any P2P programs you have installed.

I'll wait for your reply to the questions I asked.
Mikogo is a program that is used to allow other users to connect to your desktop - it has been quite a while since I've last used it if I remember correctly, so there were no problems immediately following using it. Really not sure about that QLogic one. I uninstalled Bit Torrent, and I uninstalled Party Poker a while ago. Anything you're seeing must be leftover from that, as it is not showing up in my add/remove programs list. I removed those items with HJT.
OK, if you're not using Bit Torrent or Party Poker any more then best to get rid of the orphan entries in HJT.

Run a scan with HJT and when finished check the following items (if found).

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BitTorrent DNA] "C:\Program Files\DNA\btdna.exe"
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocvw.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocvw.dll

Now close all open windows and click Fix Checked to remove them.

I'd like to do a little further investigation of the Q Logic entry.

Download RegSearch by Bobbi Flekman.
  • Create a folder in your C: drive C:\Regsearch, and extract all the files from the zip archive into that folder.
  • Double click regsearch.exe to launch the programme.
  • Copy/Paste the following into the Search Box Ql10osnip
  • On the next line Copy/Paste QLogic
  • Click OK.

Regsearch will now search your Registry for the required strings, when it is finished it will open a Notepad file RegSearch.txt, saved to the Regsearch folder.

Copy/Paste that file into your next post please.
Deleted what you said to in HJT. OK, don't see any reason not to remove the Ql10osnip entries, they seem to be orphans from an earlier install thats been removed incompletely. Old service entries can be utilised by future Malware as a means to avoid detection, so they're best removed.

First

Create a System Restore Point

  • Click Start > Run
  • Copy/Paste C:\Windows\System32\Restore\rstrui.exe into the Open: box.
  • Click OK.
  • This will open the System Restore window.
  • Click on Create a Restore Point then click Next.
  • Enter Restore from Reg Changes to the description box, then click Create.
  • A new Restore Point will be created, click Close to exit.

Next

  • Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
  • This will open an empty Notepad file.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into Notepad.
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Ql10osnip]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\Ql10osnip]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Ql10osnip]
  • Click Format and ensure Wordwrap is unchecked.
  • Save as RegFix.reg
  • Save as file type All Files or it won't work.
  • Now double click on RegFix.reg to run it.
  • You will be prompted to allow it to merge with the Registry. Allow it please.

Next

Reboot your computer (this is important)

Then

Run a new scan with RegSearch, using the same search criteria as before, and post me the new log please.
