Hello, first of all thank you in advance for the assistance.
I have a windows xp sp2 and use mozilla firefox regularly for my browser. I have automatic window updates set up for when I turn off pc (and I do every night); also I believe I get automatic firefox update notices.
Several months ago I noticed severe slowing and freezing on web pages where I'd have to restart pc or just give up for the day. I had Symantec antivirus and not sure if it picked up all threats or was working properly but lately (past month) I have had autoprotect identify and quarintine threats. The following are in quarintine:

three KillAV
one Bloodhound.Exploit.213

I had Adaware but it was always bringing up an error when trying to open so recently (other day) I redownloaded it (Adaware 2008) and I think it's worked ok. The scan identified the following which are in quarantine:

Win32.TrojanPWS.mapper
Tracking Cookie
MRU Object

I can't say that I am noticing sever problems on my pc now but I am having a disruption in internet connection and phone regularly more noticeably over the past week. The pc brings up bubble that says "a local area network is disconnected" or something like that and at the same time when I am phone the phone call is interrupted so I have to hang up. The internet connection is indeed disrupted.

I am worried abt the trojan mapper and whether I should cancel cc I use for online shopping and change all passwords etc. Also, I am worried if there are more infections as I was not able to download Spybot (well I tried and I selected the first option to download and was brought to a strange page after hitting next to read reviews basically the page was ad like and a pop up in grey box appeared etc. so I got out of there quickly.)

Here is my hijack this log:

Hello, I'm following up as I have made many changes to my computer but most importantly the Win32 Trojan Mapper was again identified (6 of them this time) despite quarantine and removal during the last scan when I made my initial post.

Location of Trojan is in system restore I think (see the following section from the Ad-Aware log):

Family Id: 1926 Name: Win32.TrojanPWS.Mapper Category: Spyware TAI:10
Item Id: 1 Value: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{0803D443-492F-46D4-A7CD-A0F2180414C9}\RP521\A0058486.exe¤Trojan/Drop.Agent.yhe.6¤trojan¤Is the Trojan horse Trojan/Drop.Agent.yhe.6
Item Id: 1 Value: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{0803D443-492F-46D4-A7CD-A0F2180414C9}\RP521\A0058487.exe¤Trojan/Drop.Agent.yhe.3¤trojan¤Is the Trojan horse Trojan/Drop.Agent.yhe.3
Item Id: 1 Value: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{0803D443-492F-46D4-A7CD-A0F2180414C9}\RP521\A0058488.exe¤Trojan/Drop.Agent.yhe.5¤trojan¤Is the Trojan horse Trojan/Drop.Agent.yhe.5

Computer is behaving the same. No drastic issues except for alerts on Ad-Aware, Adwatch, and Spybot (yes I finally got to download it.)
Additional alerts include: a SearchPixieBar identified by Spybot and classified as Hijacker. Also, Spybot alerted me that the Microsoft Windows Security Center is disabeled. Adwatch brings up alerts for registry attempt changes by something called Google Toolbar Notifier, and previously by IE. For Ad-Aware finds this round I selected to quarantine again and it indicates it was removed (I did not run a second scan yet as I am confident it will turn up again.) For Spybot finds I selected to "fix them."

So, since last post I've done cleaning so my hijack log will look different. I removed unnecessary programs and updated versions of other programs like Adobe and Jave. I've downloaded something called a CCleaner and used it to clean up temp files and fix any registry issues. I also downloaded Spybot and SpywareBlaster. My New hijack this log file follows. I appreciate any advice on how to proceed. Thank You!

Location of Trojan is in system restore

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank You for taking the time to assist me.
I have followed all your instructions. It was an uneventful process.

For the step on scanning with Malware Bytes….there were no malicious items identified so I just saved the log and closed the program and proceeded with the rest of your instructions.

My computer seems to be behaving ok. Prior to beginning any of your steps the Ad-Watch alarm was persistent and wouldn't go away regarding the GooleToolbarNotifieer.exe attempting to modify registry. Also a bubble occasionally appeared indicating that Google blocked another attempt to change search settings. (BTW, at that point I saw an icon on the bottom right tray that apparently is the google toolbar notifier thing. I don't know where it came from? Maybe some of the things I mentioned that I downloaded in my previous post?) Also, I did not rerun and Ad-Aware scan. Anyways, I am not getting Ad-Watch alerted at this moment and is far as I can see right now I don't see google thingy icon.
Otherwise, computer behavior appears to be stable.

Please see the requested logs below first Malware Bytes then Hijackthis one:

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I have a question before following your instructions. Is the google notifier something good to have (for protection?) It's just that I don't recall seeing it as an icon in the bottom right before etc. I don't mind leaving it if you recommend. Just asking now because I see with the hijack this instruction that it will be fixed/removed. Also, I read that Windows Messenger is bad. Should I tick the box for that one too? thanks.
GoogleUpdaterService.exe is binary file of the "Google Updater Service" program, which connects to Google Internet servers to automatically download and update Google's programs on your Windows system. Execution command: C:\Program Files\Google\Common\Google Updater\GoogleUpdaterService.exe IMO, From security point of view, you should never allow any programs on your system to automatically connect to any Internet server to download and update programs.
Hello and thank you again for assisting me.
I proceeded with removing the google updater after reading your explanation.
I followed your instructions except when I performed the hijack this scan to tick boxes I did not see the following in the list (perhaps the run commands removed it already?)

O23 - Service: Google Updater Service (gusvc) - Google - C:\Program Files\Google\Common\Google Updater\GoogleUpdaterService.exe

Computer behavior appears to have declined a bit.
It took a little over a minute to open firefox browser (in past has seemed to take long normally to open the browser also but I noticed it again) It is taken longer to load pages, I tried going to a couple different sites including this one. Also, when I was on this site reading the rest of instructions a bright yellow popup appeared in the bottom right of my screen indicating that "symantec antivirus autoprotect is disabled." I have seen this popup numerous times before but haven't seen them for a while/ since my original post here which is when I installed ad-aware pro. So, basically it is now reappearing for the first time again.
Also, I have some bookmarked pages that I was reading regarding cleanup before to the major geeks forum. This is one of sites I tested that seemed to take forever to load but I noticed in the grey browser bar bottom left that when it was loading it stated "connecting to a.tribalfusion.com" at some point. This does not make sense to me. I am not familiar with how to interpret what is in this grey bar area of the browser but it sounds to me like some web pages are getting redirected somewhere else even though it appears to be the webpage I intended to visit? Please explain if you have any input. thanks.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Note: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks, I will follow your instructions. I just wanted to add that edited my previous post to note to you that when I visited a bookmarked page (major geeks forum) it indicates connecting to a.tribalfusion.com (see previous post under computer behavior.) Will proceed now with your instructions.

Thanks, I will follow your instructions. I just wanted to add that edited my previous post to note to you that when I visited a bookmarked page (major geeks forum) it indicates connecting to a.tribalfusion.com (see previous post under computer behavior.)
Will proceed now with your instructions.

Are you using FireFox or IE?
Before disabling antispyware etc. should I unplug my internet connection? On the note about atribalfusion. This is creepy to me but my firefox tabs indicate what site I am on and it indicates "a.tribalfusion.com major geeks. I don't think I remember seeing that before.
LDTate, I've just completed your steps in the previous post.
Regarding Combofix, I had to download the windows console thing and after the notice came up telling me where the log was saved (C drive) there remained the window for saving the log so I saved another copy in a folder on my desktop when I clicked the minimize button for the window my screen went blank. It remained blue. This freaked me out but you indicated that it takes 20-30min so I waited assuming this is what it's suppose to do…in fact I wated 60min. Nothing happened so I pressed the off button for my laptop. Then I pressed it on. At first a black screen appeared that indicated "Please select the operating system to start" but it disappeared just as fast and my laptop appeared to load as usual. I do have the combofix log and will post but I am not sure if combofix did it's thing as I don't know what to expect from each step of the program.

I re-enabled symantec which I have but I don't believe I have a firewall other than the windows thing (oops!! I forgot to disable that )(or at least I don't know where to check for one.)

Please let me know if you think I need to redo combofix. Regarding computer behavior, took a minute to load browser and going to other pages appears to be faster than before. In fact I checked the bookmarked page I described in previous post and it loaded ok. Also, the text that tells what's going on in the firefox browser bottom left to the screen was moving quite fast that I had a hard time reading although I did see the tribal fusion words whip buy but later on in terms of time with the page loading. Also, the firefox tab for that page does not start with tribal fusion now it starts with the real name of the web page.

-thanks
