My problem is one that I have found is shared by many others!

When searching in Google using Firefox or IE7 if I click on a search result it redirects me to several different sites (findstuff.com and shopica.com for example) and enters the same search value that was originally searched for in Google. Most of the time if I go back and click on the link again it will take me to the actual site without a redirect.

my Hijackthis log is as follows:

Please help!
Hi MSCoates,

You have uTorrent, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it. Also, P2P programs usually require open ports to be exposed to the internet. This allows anyone in the world to connect directly to your machine, and if there are any security weaknesses in the P2P software or the operating system these can be exploited to gain control of your computer, install crimeware such as keyloggers or steal your private information. I strongly recommend you remove uTorrent via Add/Remove Programs.

If, however you wish to keep this program then you must not use it while we are cleaning.

Download RSIT by random/random to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As…, select your Desktop and press Save)

  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the program, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - log.txt <- this one will be maximized and info.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt and info.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both RSIT logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as RSIT produces one for you.

Hi,

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove the following:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
JavaT 6 Update 7

These are out of date and now a security risk, you already have the latest update installed (JavaT 6 Update 11) don't uninstall this one.

The warning I gave concerning uTorrent also applies to FrostWire.

I will be sure to not have it running while we clean

OK, however I note it is still running according to the RSIT report. Please try to make sure it does not run at all between now and when we finish cleaning, it is set to start automatically at boot - you should disable this from within the program. If you have any difficulties with this please let me know.

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player.
Viewpoint Media Player can be removed via Add/Remove Programs

————————————————————————

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:

O2 - BHO: NCO 2.0 IE BHO - {602ADB0E-4AFF-4217-8AA1-95DAC4DFA408} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {7FEBEFE3-6B19-4349-98D2-FFB09D4B49CA} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Restrictions have been placed on Internet Explorer control panel options, probably for security reasons by a protection program. If however you wish to remove these restrictions then please check this line also:

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

————————————————————————

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
@echo off
ipconfig /all >> temp.txt
FOR /F "tokens=*" %%i IN (temp.txt) DO (
Echo. %%i | find "Physical Address" > nul
IF ERRORLEVEL 1 echo.%%i >> IPcheck.txt
)
del temp.txt
del %0
Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called IPcheck.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

————————————————————————

I note you have recently used SmitfraudFix, the Avenger and Malwarebytes Antimalware. Please post the logs from these tools as follows:

To open the Avenger report, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

notepad C:\avenger.txt

To open the SmitfraudFix report, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

notepad C:\rapport.txt

To open the Malwarebytes Logs folder, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

"C:\Documents and Settings\Matthew\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs"

An Explorer window will open, please open the most recent log in Notepad and post the contents.

————————————————————————

Once complete, please post the IPcheck.txt output, the other logs as requested and a new HijackThis log.
After my last reply I did already go ahead and disable uTorrent from loading on start-up and uninstalled Frostwire completely.

here are the logs requested:

Sorry about running these with utorrent on, I didn't even think of that. Does PeerGaurdian even help that much with used with a P2P like utorrent?
Hi,

Does PeerGaurdian even help that much with used with a P2P like utorrent?

The main purpose of PeerGuardian is to help prevent monitoring of people's file sharing activity. It is most commonly used by those knowingly using file sharing programs to transfer files illegally. It doesn't do anything to mitigate the risks I referred to earlier.

Please also post a new HijackThis log.

Thanks for the info on PeerGaurdian, I thought it was to assist with malware/spyware. I'm not sure if uTorrent is the source of my problem because I mainly download legal files from bittorrent.com which are "supposed" to be clean, yet maybe they aren't.
Hi,

If you can't verify the source of files you are downloading, it's very hard to be sure they are clean. When downloading P2P files the source is usually unknown, hence the risk of malware. I strongly recommend you use other methods to obtain the files you are downloading.

Download Gmer to your Desktop from here:
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip
  • Unzip the program onto your Desktop (right-click, select Extract All… and follow the prompts)
  • Disconnect from the internet and close all running programs
  • Double click gmer.exe, let the gmer.sys driver load if asked
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…say OK
  • If there is no warning, then check that the Rootkit tab is selected and click the Scan button - don't change any settings before you do so
  • Please do not use your computer during the scan
  • Once the scan is complete, click the Copy button
  • Open Notepad (Click Start->Run, type notepad and Enter) and hit Ctrl+V to paste the log and then save the log to your desktop

Once complete, please post the Gmer report and a new HijackThis log.
Also, let me know how your machine is running and if the redirections are continuing.

Honestly the computer still runs fine and I don't really notice any issues other than the problems with the redirects.

The redirects seem to be less frequent (not every search result I click on redirects me) but now its going to new sites such as couponmountian.com and I've notice that the initial redirect comes from something called goougly.

I don't know if that helps in any way.

Thanks a lot for trying to help me! I know its not as much of a severe issue as some others have, but it annoys the carp** out of me because I'm trying to use this laptop as a teaching tool for my parents who don't know much about computers or the internet.
Hi MSCoates,

The redirects seem to be less frequent (not every search result I click on redirects me) but now its going to new sites such as couponmountian.com and I've notice that the initial redirect comes from something called goougly.

Can you give me a little more detail? When you do a search are the results false or are you not taken to the correct place when you click a link?
Exactly what do you mean by the "initial redirect"? Please describe what happens exactly and tell me where you see goougly.

Also, please confirm whether the problem occurs in Firefox and Internet Explorer or just one of them.

————————————————————————

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
@echo off
reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions" /s >> results.txt 2>>&1
reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\GoogleDesktopManager-010708-104812" /s >> results.txt 2>>&1
reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\gmer" /s >> results.txt 2>>&1
del %0
Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

————————————————————————

Download Dr.Web CureIt to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As…, select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double-click launch.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and UN-CHECK Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and make these changes:
    • Next to Objects - Infected objects select Report
    • Next to Objects - Incurable objects select Report
    • Next to Infected packages -> Archives select Report
    • Next to Infected packages -> Containers select Report
  • At the bottom, UN-CHECK Prompt on action, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Note: These settings changes are IMPORTANT, please ensure you have made them before scanning
  • Then select Complete scan and press the green arrow to start the scan
  • When the scan is complete, click File-> Save report list, save the report to your desktop and close Dr Web CureIt

————————————————————————

Once complete, please post the results.txt output, the Dr Web report and a new HijackThis log.
To clarify my former post…

The redirects seem to only happen in Firefox and not in IE7

The redirects occur after I type in a search item and get a list of results in the form of links, upon clicking any of the links I see the site www.goougly.com/… appear immediately and then I am taken to one of the sites such as couponmountain.com or shopica.com

The search results themselves are not false

If I use the back button and then click on the exact same search result for a second time, I am taken to the right location without being redirected

I hope that makes more sense, I was a little groggy when I tried to explain it the first time.

I think that may have done it, I'll continue to test it every once in a while until I'm positive. I was wondering if you suggest anything other than AVG 8 Free for me to run all the time or anything the have downloaded to run once a week or so in addition to it?

Thanks so much!
Hi,

I'm glad to hear things are running better, I'll give you some detailed recommendations when we have finished cleaning - which will be very shortly.

Please download Suspicious File Packer to your Desktop.
  • Right-click sfp.zip, choose Extract All… and extract sfp.exe to your Desktop
  • Double-click sfp.exe to start the program
  • Copy and Paste the following file list into the text box of the program:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Matthew\Local Settings\Application Data\{4E5DC826-1C41-462D-86E4-9AFA759B46FC}\*.*
    C:\Documents and Settings\Matthew\Local Settings\Application Data\{4E5DC826-1C41-462D-86E4-9AFA759B46FC}\chrome\*.*
    C:\Documents and Settings\Matthew\Local Settings\Application Data\{4E5DC826-1C41-462D-86E4-9AFA759B46FC}\chrome\content\*.*

  • Now press the Continue button
  • A file called requested-files[YYYY-MM-DD_MM_ss].cab will appear on your Desktop.
  • Now open this page in your browser
  • Press Browse and browse to the requested-files[YYYY-MM-DD_MM_ss].cab file on your Desktop, fill in the other fields as appropriate then press Send File

————————————————————————

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
@echo off
reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows" /v "AppInit_DLLS" /d "avgrsstx.dll" /f >> results3.txt 2>>&1
rd /s /q "C:\Documents and Settings\Matthew\Local Settings\Application Data\{4E5DC826-1C41-462D-86E4-9AFA759B46FC}" >> results3.txt 2>>&1
del %0
Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results3.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

————————————————————————

Once complete, please post the results3.txt output and a new HijackThis log.
