Hello. I am having a lot of trouble cleaning my system. I have run MBAM at least twice everyday for the past week and I keep getting the same threats. They never seem to be deleted. I have disabled System Restore, set my Add-ons to be managed by the administrator, manually deleted infected files, stopped processes from startup, and taken many other steps to clean my machine but nothing seems to be helping. I am currently running, Symantec Anti-Virus, CCleaner, MBAM, and Computer Associates E-Trust Pest Patrol. Most of these programs I got from the Military Computer Security Share Server from my unit. Please help me.

Hi Lucius Corley.

My name is revel and I will be working with you to resolve the issues you're experiencing.

As I am still in training, all of my instructions must be checked by one of our malware experts before they are given to you. Thus, there may be some delay in responding.

Before we begin, please review these important notes:
  • The fixes are specific to your machine and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you that your machine is clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't understand or have trouble with the instructions, please stop and ask for clarification before proceeding.
  • Continue to reply to this topic; do not start another.

Please be patient while I review your log. I will be back as soon as possible with instructions.
I have an updated MBAM log. It was able to run today without the computer freezing completely. I pretty much have to keep the task manager running at all times so that I can terminate processes that freeze up my computer. I will also attach an updated Hijack This log.

Also, Winpatrol is picking up a few .dll files that automatically repopulate themselves and tells me that one of them is located in a crucial part of my system configuration (c:\windows\system32\jimekaju.dll,a). This is the message that follows every time I disallow the startup entry:

This setting is in a key location for your operating system. We do not recommend removal unless you are absolutely sure it is causing problems. Are you sure you want this removed?

I click yes because I know that this is some form of malicious software.

Thank you for all of your help.

Lucius
Hi Lucius Corley,
Thanks for the updated info.

Reactivate System Restore
  • Right-click on Control Panel, select Properties - or - (Start > Control Panel > System > select "System Restore" tab)
  • Select the System Restore and uncheck the box "Turn off System Restore on all drives."
  • Click Apply, then Ok.

Your log indicates that you may have two antivirus running, CA Internet Security and Symantec. . Having an antivirus is essential but running two can cause conflicts, produce false alarms, and hinder system performance. I recommend that you uninstall either CA Internet Security or Symantec though the choice of which is up to you.

Some things to consider:
If you have a paid-for version of either program I would keep that one and uninstall the other.
If CA Internet Security is providing additional protection (e.g. firewall) it may be the better one to keep.

Uninstall the antivirus program of your choice using Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel.

Note: If you decide to remove Symantec, you may need to download the Norton Removal Tool from Symantec's website to ensure all components are removed.

———————————
When you've uninstalled the antivirus:

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager, do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save a notepad will open with the contents. Copy/paste the contents of the notepad file in your next reply.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your antivirus and anti-spyware applications (including WinPatrol) as they may otherwise interfere with the running of Combofix This is usually done via a right-click on the program's System Tray icon.

  • Double-click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making IE the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

In your next reply, please provide (copy/paste):
  • Combofix log
  • Uninstall list
  • new HijackThis log
I am currently running CA Internet Security's Anti-Spyware program. No anti-virus software is installed for CA Internet Security. The only Anti-virus program I am running is Symantec. I will attach a new MBAM, Hijack This, and ComboFix log. I will include an uninstall list taken from CCleaner. That is the only way, other than typing everything out, that I know to give you an uninstall list. I thank you for all of your help thus far. I am pretty skilled at getting rid of annoyances like this for the most part, but this problem had me really stumped. I am pretty sure I missed something small, like I usually do, or at least something very easy, but I am glad I found you guys and that you would help me. Thank you again.

Hello,
Did you have any problems running Combofix this last time?

Remove Programs
  • Download Accelerator Plus (DAP or dap.exe)- DAP is not technically malware, but it may include malware and allow it into your system. Note that the free version is adware based. A free, and spyware free, alternative is Star Downloader. To uninstall the Download Accelerator Plus (DAP or dap.exe.
    • Click Start > Control Panel.
    • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
    • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Download Accelerator Plus (DAP) or dap.exe, click Remove.
    • Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.
  • Viewpoint (and components) Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are components that are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.

I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
    • Find the components in the Add and Remove Programs list and click Remove
    • Close Control Panel.

Update Java
Your version of Java is outdated and now a security risk. To update:
  • Go to the Java SE Download page >> HERE <<
  • Click on Free Java Download
  • Click on the Free Java Download button again and save the installation file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs that you may have running, including your web browser(s)
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall All previous versions of Java (include any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in its name)
  • Repeat as necessary to remove each Java version that is listed
  • When all components are removed, reboot your computer
  • To install the new version, double-click on the installation file that you saved to your desktop

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from >> HERE << and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run the program.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (will be maximized) and info.txt (will be minimized)

In your next reply, please provide:
  • RSIT logs (both log.txt and info.txt)
  • update on how your system is running
EDIT="I didn't have any problems running combofix this time. It was very fast compared to the last time i ran it."

My computer is running a lot better, however it is not running like it did before all of this happened. It used to run baby bottom smooth, but now it seems to lag for about 12 to 20 seconds every time a new window or menu opens, and stalls when scrolling. It no longer freezes, but seems to be straining to run. I would say it is about 85% better than it was before.

Here are the files you asked for.

Hi,
Nice work. Log is looking better now.. just a bit more to do..

Add/Remove Programs

Using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel find the following: Java™ 6 Update 7 and click Remove to uninstall it (if present)

HijackThis Fixes
  • Open HijackThis and Do a system scan only
  • Place a check to the left of these entries:

    O15 - Trusted Zone: www.gmail.com

Note:The site(s) listed in your Trusted Zones will be removed. Placing sites in the Trusted Zone is not recommended. Read more about Security Zones here: Technet: Security Zones

  • Close all open windows and browsers - except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked
  • Close HijackThis

I'd like to see one more scan to check for remnants so please run the ESET Online Scanner

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Visit this link >> HERE <<
  • Check the box to accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • When asked to install the ActiveX control, allow the install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the options Remove found threats is unchecked and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan. Be patient, the scan may take some time
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy/paste the log in your next reply

In your next reply, please provide:
  • ESET scan results
  • a new HijackThis log
