Hello,

My computer was recently infected with Virtumonde and other various malware. I used some programs such as Spybot and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to sniff out and supposedly clean up Virtumonde, but I am finding that my PC is still very much infected. I am posting here from my laptop and moving any logs I take from scans over with my flash drive.

Virtumonde has broken all of my anti-malware software (attempting to run the .exes produces no results.) Recently, it has made it to where explorer freezes every time I boot up, completely crippling my computer. I cannot access even task manager. The only way to boot my computer is through safe mode or diagnostics mode through selective startup. I also cannot access websites where I would receive obvious assistance with this problem.

Unfortunately, I cannot run MBAM and retrieve a log from it and I did not save a log from when I ran it before. That said, I sadly have no MBAM log to present here.

I recoded the following HijackThis log a day or so before my explorer began to lock up. I can run Hijackthis in Safe mode and Diagnostics Mode, but there is substantially less data to show, and I suspect that it is no wholly helpful because my computer is then not running the processes that are giving it blocked. I can take other scans if I am incorrect in thinking this.

Either way:

I ran ATF Cleaner with no trouble.

However, my browser could not access besttechie.net to download mbam-setup.exe. I can connect to other websites, but besttechie (and similar websites) get refused. I suspect that whatever malware I have is playing a hand in refusing connections to these types of sites.

I actually already have MBAM on my computer, but as I described in my first post, it will not open when I attempt to run it. This, also, is surely the work of virtumonde/whatever my computer is infected with.

Still, I will post an updated HJT log, in case the ATF Cleaner might have changed things in any way.

good luck mschroe919

Also in safe mode the mbam-setup.exe change its name to scan.exe and try to run it then
this will keep you for awhile, more to come so keep up the faith.
good luck mschroe919
I had uninstalled McAfee after I thought Virtumonde was gone from my computer when I ran MBAM because this has not been the first time that it hasn't succeeded in protecting my computer and I was rather upset about that since it was something that I had paid for that hasn't been working. I understand at this point that this was probably a pretty big mistake. I was going to install new anti-virus software, but I never got around to it before I noticed the problem was persisting again. To be perfectly clear, I am pretty sure there is absolutely no active anti-virus software on my computer right now.

I found that renaming mbam in the system folder allows it to run. I realized this after I made this post, so I will edit with an MBAM log and a new HJT soon!

Also, I had HJT delete/repair the above listed keys.

EDIT:

Unfortunately MBAM could not update its definitions as the connection to the two options for where I could get the updates from appeared blocked, so MBAM could only find 3 infections. I am sure there are more, since there were more infections when I ran it last. The definitions this time around were only updated to 12/3/08.

Either way, here are the MBAM and HJT logs respectively:

I am not sure whats happening but I only got hjt up to 018 line please summit anothe hjt this log, maybe you are only posting one page? good luck mschroe919
I believe it may be because I have been operating in safe mode so far.

I went into MSConfig and set it to normal startup and rebooted. Explorer is no longer freezing on normal start up! This is definite progress.

Here's hopefully a full HJT log with normal startup:

Thats a lot better, now I need a little time to look your log over. I will yet tonight post some more. I am going to eat a little something now be back soon. Yes your doing great. while I am gone can you reload you anti virus and run it? If you don't want McAfee you can go here and get the free avg ver8.0

AVG

I will be back see you later my friend
mschroe919
I downloaded and installed AVG. However, I am having the same issue as I was having with MBAM. I cannot update the definitions because the connection is getting refused. This, again, is clearly caused by the malware, as I have no trouble updating my anti-virus and other such software on my laptop like I do my desktop. It seems that fixing that problem may help out a lot at this moment. AVG deleted some cookies, but found 0 threats. I also got some Windows Updates now that I have access to my basic computer functions… Let me know if you need scans done with HJT or some such. Unfortunately, I must depart for the night as I must be up in the morning to attend business. I am grateful that you have stuck with me tonight and helped me sort out my issue on my desktop. If it is not too much to ask, would there be a time that I can expect you to be active like this again tomorrow evening? Please let me know–along with any further instructions you might have for me. I will be checking back here tomorrow. Thank you for keeping me updated!
youir pc will run slow mostly because you hav a lot of prgrams running

Above all Erunt should not be in startups.
So here is a program to help speed up your pc.

NEXT:
Lets try something here to speed up your PC.

First:

Please download System Security Suite. here.

ftp://ftp.cyf-kr.edu.pl/pub/mirror/WinSit…/3ssetup104.zip

Extract it from the zip file into a folder.
.
Run 3S under “Items To Clear” tab place a checkmark in all of them but the last.

then under autorun tasks just lock the ones you don't want to start. Your not deleteing them
just stopping them. You can start them manualy. You can use google to see what every auto run is.

Here is a list of what you have running in background but don't need them there.

AGAIN I SAY YOUR NOT DELETEING THEM

hpgs2wnd.exe
DrgToDsc.exe
QTTask.exe
ISUSPM.exe
Quickset.exe
MsnMsgr.Exe
msmsgs.exe
DataSafeOnlineScheduler.exe
aim.exe
AUTOBACK.EXE
OSA.EXE

These can all be started manualy

Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

NEXT:

Finally a reg cleaner that works without paying to clean
after backing up do this next:

I recommend you download RegSeeker.Get it here:

http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm

Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.
Talk about speeding up the PC?
This will definitly do something to speed up your pc
After running this just post back as to how its running now, then I will have a few good things to do to help keep it running good.
good luck mschroe919
I performed the above steps. Upon rebooting, my explorer froze again and was forced to hard reboot my computer. It boot up again correctly this time, but this did not occur since it had begun to work again. Also, I still am getting connections refused for the updates servers for AVG. This is surely no coincidence. I guarantee that it is not my ISP, as I can go to websites on my laptop and other computers in the house that my Desktop cannot access. I frankly do not feel like my computer is clean. My post has honestly never been about slow-up, but rather objectionable functionality. If my computer was clean, I am sure I would not be having problems connecting to anti-virus, anti-malware related sites. These are the only kinds of sites that I cannot access. My immediate concern is getting my computer completely clean. Speeding up is an after-thought!
Hi the fixing and usin reg seeker was not mainly to speed up your PC, but to get rid of the left over junk.
Lrets do this next:

Download ComboFix to your Desktop.
Get it

HERE;

here:

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
——————————————————————–
Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.

——————————————————————–

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish
I am back from my aforementioned business now and should be available for the rest of the day!

Combofix ran smoothly, but when it prompted that I should download the Windows Recovery Console, I could unsurprisingly not connect to microsoft's website to get it.

Anyway, Combofix and new HJT log:

Hi ocphox, Looks like we are getting somewhere now. It is going to tyake me a while to read the 2 logs for further help. I should be back before the night ends. You say your pc is doing better? mschroe919
My anti-malware and related software is actually opening, a first all week. I can also connect to sites such as bleepingcomputer, mcafee, and the rest of their kind. Seems to be functioning well! Just waiting for the green light. I am going to take the liberty to update AVG and other programs that I could not get updates for over the course of receiving assistance.
