Hi bilal,

Welcome to TomCoyote Forums. You have several serious hijackers and other assorted malware on your computer, but before we begin cleaning it up you need to UPDATE your Windows and Internet Explorer. There are several GLARING holes in your security now that will be closed by the updates. Go to this site: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp The site will examine your computer and tell you what updates you need. Download and install them, rebooting as needed, and KEEP UPDATING until you get the message that there are NO MORE Critical Updates. Do this for BOTH Windows AND Internet Explorer. As it is now, when you go on the Web it's like driving through a BAD part of town at night with your windows down! :o <_<

After you are updated, the first problem we'll address is your CoolWebSearch infection - that's a rather nasty browser hijacker that's tricky to remove.

To clean it up, we need to download and run a special program made just for this problem. Go to this site http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip and download CWShredder. Unzip it to any convenient PERMANENT folder (such as C:\CWS) and run it. Click on "Search for Updates" and install any it finds; THIS IS CRITICAL! Now reboot your computer into SAFE MODE (press F8 after the BIOS loads) and start CWShredder again. Click on FIX (not SCAN, which will NOT fix anything), and let it fix everything it finds. Follow the prompts that appear, and do what they say.

Then reboot into SAFE MODE again, and RUN IT AGAIN. It should not find anything this time, but this thing is mean and tricky, so we want to be SURE it's gone.

After the program finishes, reboot into NORMAL MODE, run HijackThis and post a fresh log so we can go on to the next problem; there will still be quite a bit of work to be done.
hi k3dc thank you for the reply and the help. sorry for my late reply, unfortunately i was away from home for a few days. But I have now updated all the critical applications for windows, but not yet explorer as i do not have the office Cd to hand. Shall I wait, or can i got ahead for now?
Hi bilal, Yes, go ahead and run the rest of the items I suggested in that posting. The Windows updates are the most important, but you also want to get the Internet Explorer updates done as soon as you can- they will eliminate several security problems. For now, though, they can wait until you get the CD you need. The most important thing right now is the CWShredder; once you get that run, the worst part of the problem you've been having should be finished. As soon as you can get that done, post a fresh HijackThis log and we'll get on to the rest of the cleanup.
Hi, here's a new log…

Hi bilal,

Here is the next step; you are making progress, although it may not seem that way to you right now. :)

Follow this link: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/pv.zip and download "PV.ZIP".

Unzip it to your desktop; it WILL NOT WORK if you run it from inside the zip.

After it's unzipped go to your desktop, open the PV folder that was created and double-click on "Runme.bat"

A DOS window will open; please select option 1 for explorer dll's by typing 1 and then pressing ENTER.

Notepad will open, with a log in it; please copy and paste the log into your reply to this post, and we'll get on to the next step.

Hi bilal,

Please download the latest version of CWShredder from here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip Don't do anything with it yet, though- it's for a later step in the cleanup.

Now, download TheKillbox from here: http://download.broadbandmedic.com/VbStuff/KillBox.zip

Unzip the files to their own folder (C:\KILLBOX), then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wusat32.dll

DON'T click any of the buttons, though. Instead, please click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". On the next screen, click on the File menu and choose "Add File". The filenameand path should show up in the window. If that's successful, choose the Action menu and select "Process and Reboot". You'll be prompted to reboot; do so. (If for any reason the file does NOT appear there, QUIT THE PROGRAM and return here for other instructions.)

When you're back in windows, please unzip CWShredder to any convenient PERMANENT folder (such as C:\CWS) and run it. Click on "Search for Updates" and install any it finds. Then CLOSE YOUR BROWSER AND ANY WINDOWS EXCEPT THE ONE IT'S RUNNING IN and click on FIX (not SCAN, which will NOT fix anything), and let it fix everything it finds. Follow the prompts, and do as it says.

When it finishes, reboot into SAFE MODE (press F8 after the BIOS loads) and run CWShredder again. It should not find anything this time, this is a "just-in-case" procedure. This thing is tricky and mean, and we want to be SURE we've got it all.

Now reboot into Normal Mode and post a new pv.zip explorer log along with a fresh HijackThis log, so we can see what else needs to be done.
Hi kd3c again sorry for the late reply and again thanks for the continued help. I have been trying to download the killbox from the link you gave but it doesn't seem to work…? What should I do? Bilal
Hi bilal,

You're rght- for some reason that link no longer works. Here's one I just tried, it DOES work. Instead of an automatic download, you must click on the file you want to download and it will send it to you:

http://download.broadbandmedic.com/

If for some reason this fix does not help (this is a new variant strain that's particularly nasty), we are developing a new fix for it. I'll be able to tell from your next log if we were successful here, or if the new one will be needed.

EDITED FOR SPELLING
Hi k3dc, here's the pv log, then the hijack this log…

Hi bilal,

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you- I had some urgent personal business that took longer than I had thought to finish. Let's see if we can finish this thing off. This procedure is complex, and since you CANNOT go on line until the process is finished, please print out these directions before you start.

IMPORTANT! Once you begin this process, DO NOT GO ON LINE until the process is finished.

Please make sure that you can view ALL FILES, including system and hidden files and folders. If you do not know how to do this, use this link: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html and follow the step-by-step directions for your Windows version.

Step 1:

Click START>CONTROL PANEL>ADMINISTRATIVE PROGRAMS>SERVICES. Look for a service called "Network Security Service." Double-click on that service and click STOP. Also write down the name and path of the file listed in the "Path to Executable" field. This filename must be deleted below.

Step 2:

Press once, to get into Task Manager. End the follow processes if they exist:

* atlcf.exe
* (the file from the service above)

Step 3:
Now delete the following files:

* C:\WINDOWS\atlcf.exe
* (The file from the service above)

Also delete any files that have the same name as these files but end with a "dll". You should see them right next to each other.

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right-click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked;. if it is, uncheck it and try again.

Step 4:
Now run HijackThis. CLOSE YOUR BROWSER AND ALL WINDOWS EXCEPT THE ONE IT'S RUNNING IN, and put a check in the box at the left end of ONLY the lines below Some of them may not be there; go on to the next item. Then click on FIX CHECKED and let it run. (In addition to the primary hijacker, we are also getting rid of several other hijackers, as well as spyware and adware items.)

C:\Program Files\Save\Save.exe
C:\WINDOWS\atlcf.exe
C:\Program Files\WeatherCast\Weather.exe
C:\Program Files\ClockSync\Sync.exe

C:\Program Files\Common Files\GMT\GMT.exe

Step 5:

In the next step we are going to remove the service in the Registry that gets installed by this malware. The service will always start with "__NS_Service". For the purposes of this step we will assume that it's called NS_Service_3, but may be called something different on your computer.

Go to START>RUN and type REGEDIT; press

Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\__NS_Service_3 (or whatever number it may have)

If " __NS_Service_3" exists , right-click on it and choose DELETE from the menu.

Now navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY___NS_Service_3

If LEGACY___NS_Service_3 exists, then right-click on it and choose DELETE from the menu.

Close REGEDIT.

Reboot and post a fresh log

Hi bilal,

That log looks clean. CONGRATULATIONS! GOOD WORK!

Now the trick is to KEEP IT THAT WAY. I have a few suggestions in that regard; they're quite painless, especially when compared with what you've just been through.

First off, you need to empty your TEMP folders. From your Start menu, choose Accessories and click on System Tools; choose Disk Cleanup and be sure it's set to clean all hard drives.

After it's scanned your system, mark EVERYTHING for deletion and press OK to get rid of the junk. Next, from Control Panel choose "Internet Options"; in the center section of the gray panel is "Temporary Internet Files". Click on "Delete Files" and put a check in the box that says "Delete all offline content" and click OK to confirm. Next, press "Delete Cookies" (click OK to comfirm) and close the panel by selecting "OK" at the bottom.

Now you need to flush out your Restore Points, because your backup files have the infections you've just cleaned off your system in them. Should it be necessary to Restore your system using them, you would be reinfected. The procedure I'm going to give you will eliminate that possibility.

The procedure is basically simple in concept, but somewhat complex in execution. Read through it, and be sure you have the sequence of steps clear in your mind before starting. It may be helpful to print this post for reference.

The sequence of operations is:

1) DISABLE System Restore.
2) REBOOT- this makes Windows delete ALL the old Restore Points.
3) RE-ENABLE System Restore.
4) REBOOT again- this will force Windows to create a new CLEAN restore point.
5) Empty your Recycle Bin.
6) DEFRAG your system. This will overwrite the old files, assuring that they are GONE.

For instructions on how to DISABLE and RE-ENABLE System Restore, follow this link:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam

To increase your chances of staying clean,, KEEP YOUR WINDOWS AND BROWSER UPDATED. As new security problems are found, Microsoft issues UPDATES to plug the holes that have been found. The top entry on your START menu should be "Windows Update," so this one is as easy as falling off a log.

Next, I recommend installing SpywareBlaster. It "inoculates" your computer against literally THOUSANDS of known malware items, and it works in such a way that it DOES NOT need to be running (and consuming system resources) to protect you. The program sets a "Kill-Bit" for each malware item it blocks, and then that thing can't download to your computer or run if it's there. I don't know just how it works, but I can assure you IT DOES! Once the protection is set, all you have to do is check for updates about once a week, install them and run SB to set protection against the new items on the list. Once a Kill-Bit is set, you have PERMANENT protecton from that item unless you remove it. Best of all, this is FREEWARE. Follow this link to download it: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

For a good overview of basic Internet security, here is a good article: http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957 If I can leave you with one final thought, it's this: Security is NOT a destination, it's an endless journey.
hi k3dc well i'd really like to thank you. you have been very kind and most impressive. who are you…? are you like a super hero that comes to rescue people? bilal thanks!
