Hi, I am using a Windows XP operating system, and have picked up "Mirar", though I do not recollect ever installing/downloading it. It is very annoying and launches pop-ups etc. There is a toolbar on internet explorer and I cannot remove it from the toolbars. I have looked on the internet, but am quite new to computing and do not understand how to uninstall it. I have tried "Control Panel, Add or remove software, remove mirar" but this opens up a loading html page which doesnt work. I have also tried a system restore, but this always tells me it has failed and not restored. On other websites I don't understand how to remove it manually, it's just too complicated for me and am now wary of downloading any "Mirar removal tools" and suchlike because I'm scared to infect my computer more! Many people talk about "HijackThis Logs" and "Registry Logs" but I am completely confused over this. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi again,
this is the latest log of HijackThis. i followed your steps, rebooted and then ran a system scan and saved a logfile.

My PC is behaving quite well - the mirar toolbar that used to be on my internet explorer is now gone - is it fixed? Just another thing to note, though this may be a totally unrelated problem, but when I start up my computer, it doesnt start immediately and I have to press F1 for it to carry on. It may be unrelated but has been happening for a few months. otherwise all is well! i have AVG v7.5 and this has said its picked up a "trojan horse" - I am not sure if it has now but will check.

Hi

Also, sorry to bother you, but I am currently getting help from Dell for a malfunctioning DVD drive. should i leave this till i have resolved the Mirar issue? Thanks for all your help.

I don't see why you would have to wait unless they are taking your computer in for repair the dvd drive.

As far as your Mila\r issue I believe it is gone and I want to read your log to see iof any thin is hanging around in the meantime you can do this:

FIRST:

Download trial version of F secure program to check for hidden virus files:

Get it

HERE:

Download to desk top
Then click on fsbl.exe

next agree to terms
next click run
next click on scan
next when done it will put a log on desktop with a long number
post that here.
good luck mschroe919

I will be back later let me know

Hi Yes exactly what I was looking for, there is no hidden bad stuff. It would have shown them after the word note. I am still double chesking your last log. How is your ps behaving noe? mschroe919
Hi, behaving very well thanks ! This Mirar problem seems to have ceased, as I cannot see it in the Add/Remove Programs or as a Toolbar. I have posted a new topic regarding a DVD drive in the Hardware forum, but it seems as if my PC is virus-free! If you can recommend any (decent) anti-virus/malware programs it would be greatly appreciated - I am currently using AVG Free Edition 7.5 but this didn't work very well to stop the Trojan Horses or Mirar!!! Thankyou so much for helping me - greatly appreciated and I will recommend you to friends!! Thanks again
Hi t-man7

I see that your log is clean. You did great cleaning it up,
pat yourself on the back.
As I said there would be more …..here
this is my canned all clean speech.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Note you may have some of theses programs allready, if so just a reminder to keep updated.

FIRST:
You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.
===================================================================
NEXT:
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

Use an Anti Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See these links for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
If you don't have one here are some of the better AV products.

Symantec/Norton Antivirus: http://www.symantec.com/nav/nav_9xnt/
Kapersky AV: http://www.kaspersky.com/buyonline.html?info=25
Nod32 : http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm
Panda AV: http://www.pandasoftware.com/
McAfee Virusscan: http://us.mcafee.com/root/package.asp?pkgid=100
AVG Anti-Virus (Free version available) http://www.grisoft.com/

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
If you don't have one see link below for a free firewall:

ZoneAlarm:

Sunbelt Kerio:

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

Install SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
========================================================================

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
