What's My Problem?

I went to the local computer shop for advice when there were several problems on my home network. There are four computers on my network ( all have windows XP home)and one shares a printer. At one time all four computers could print but now only the print server can. I realized I had a problem when my son told me he couldn't go online and I went for help.
I called my local guru and told him the symptoms my sons computer was having. He told me that I had a corrupt TCP/IP stack, and that it was most likely caused by spyware. He said that I would have to rebuild the TCP/IP stack, and of course I knew that the spyware would have to be removed. I was told to do a google search to find instructions for rebuilding the stack. Once at the google page I read a few sites talking about rebuilding the TCP/IP stack. I picked a plan of action and began by running Adaware. I had read that doing a system restore could repair my problem so I tried that . I could then go online again so I updated Adaware and ran it again on the restored system. I picked one method of rebuilding the TCP/IP stack and tried it. That pretty much takes me to yesterday and my current symptoms are: This computer (#4) can surf the web well, but cannot be pinged by most of the other three computers on this local network and will not print to the printer on (#1). I have downloaded Spybot Search and Destroyand run it also before attempting to do another system restore. Yesterday before I tried to post on this site, I noted that I couldn't run notepad and system restore would not successfully run. I told my local tech that it looked like I was going to have to reinstall windows XP. He sounded like I was correct but If I didn't get rid of the cause I may still have the problem, and recommended that I use "hijack this". So here I am in need of assistance and hoping to learn a valuable lesson.
Yesterday my original topic was something like "as directed" in the open forum. I saved the hijack this log in Word as a .txt file and pasted into the post since my notepad is inoperable. I hope this is enough information for whoever can help me I will copy and paste the log once more here.

Please advise me. My local tech is really good but so busy! and I'm trying to help myself without being a burden. I will return to this site in hopes of finding a reply. I kind of new at this, if it's any help my e-mail address is [removed]
Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.com!!!

The log file has a couple of "suspicious" entries.

Could you go to this link:

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html

And submit these files:

C:\WINDOWS\zxipp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\cpqzziyz.dll

For an online virus scan. Then reply back in this thread what the scan revealed.

You should also move Hijack This! to a permanent folder (suggest "C:\HJT\"). :)
Micah, Thank you for the reply! I followed your advice and submitted those files to Kaspersky Anti-virus. The first one C:\windows\zxipp.exe got no response and seemed to not register. I then did a search for it and could not find it on this computer (#3). The second file C:\windows\cpqzziyz. dll got the following response: "cpqzziyz.dll- infected by TrojanDownkoader.Win32.Lemmy.u Statistics: Known viruses: 90382 updated: 04-06-2004 file size (kb): 68 virus bodies: 1 files: 1 I immediatly tried to get in touch with you and could not, none of the pages would come up. I knew that it would be best to "clean " the file rather than delete it so I ran PC Cillin Internet Security 2004 scan and It didn't find the virus. I then sent correspondence to Trend Micro In reference to this problem. Today I was finally able to check e-mail and got instructions from Trend Micro. I have not followed these instructions yet, I want to hear from you to see what you have to say. I am not sure that this post will work the way I hope it to. If I'm making a misteak in procedure please let me know. (Is it correct to always send a new reply while reading the original thread?) Thank you newtech
Good job!!!

It is ALWAYS "correct" to reply in the same thread about the same problem until that problem is resolved.

I suppose it would be best to follows the instructions from Trend-Micro at this point.

The next thing you need to do is to create a "permanent" folder for Hijack This! (suggest "C:\HJT\") and move it there. It is not wise to run in from a "temporary" folder because it makes BACKUPS (that you may need). If these backups are in a "temporary" folder they may get deleted accidentally.

About this file:

C:\windows\zxipp.exe

If you do not know where this file came from, or what it does, I believe it would be safe to have Hijack This! fix this entry:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tatu] C:\WINDOWS\zxipp.exe

The online scan only checks for virii, trojans, etc. It is not intended for "spyware" (browser hijackers, etc.).

It is also safe to fix this:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Then reboot, and possibly check to see if your network is functioning correctly.

Then post a fresh log file into this thread. :)

P.S. - Since all of your PC's are networked together, we may need to look at a log file from all of them to be sure you are free of parasites.
 I followed you last instructions and have another logfile to send you. I pinged this computer #4 with the firewall activated and then not activated and it seems that the firewall is the problem there. I still need to fix the print problem too. But I will have to spend more time on the print problem. I will install hijack this on the remaining three computers and ask you to scrutinize those logs soon. here is the logfile for today.

Thanks again! :D

hello again newtech!!! :)

First, you need to move Hijack This! into a PERMANENT folder.

If it's in most any folder that has "temp" in the path, it's probably not a good one to have it in.

Here's a link to a tutorial on creating a "permanent" folder if your' interested:

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Move HijackThis into this folder.

If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

After moving Hijack This! to it's new folder, have it fix these items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DC68B928-FBBC-4BFE-844E-6B81EE24C7DC} - C:\WINDOWS\cpqzziyz.dll

O16 - DPF: {4E330863-6A11-11D0-BFD8-006097237877} (InstallFromTheWeb ActiveX Control) - http://tw.msi.com.tw/autobios/client/iftwclix.cab

O16 - DPF: {E0CE16CB-741C-4B24-8D04-A817856E07F4} - http://cabs.roings.com/cabs/roing.cab

Reboot and post a new log file. :)
Micah,

I didn't tell you that I had already saved the hijack this to it's own folder, but it's done. The path is C:\hijack this.

I followed your last instructions and the resulting log file follows. Question Should I have saved a backup of C:\windows\cpqzziyz.dll? I didn't but if I need to I can do a system restore.

That log looks good!! In answer to your question about "saving" the file: C:\windows\cpqzziyz.dll When you "fix" things with Hijack This!, it doesn't delete the file. It just removes the registry entry so the program doesn't run when you boot. That file still may be out there. If you can find it, it would be wise to delete it. However, many of those "bad" files seem to disappear as quickly as they appear. Again, that log looks "good to go" now. :)
Micah, Thanks for your feedback. I'm ready to persue the network issue, should I start another thread? or keep this one going? Let me tell you a little about this problem. I discovered that turning off this (computer at station #3 )computers firewall I could ping it succesfully. Today however my son wanted to share a folder on the network and I couldn't view it on my computer on station #1. Should I have you evaluate hijack this logs from this computer(#3)? awaiting your reply thank you! newtech
Truthfully, I don't think I'm a "network slueth", but I can deal with most (not all) malware issues. But if we run into a malware issue I can't handle, I can always call in the Cavalry! I think the best way to go would be for me (or someone in this forum) to be sure all the PC's are free of malware and virii, keeping the posts in this thread. Then when we are sure all the PC's are infection free, if you still have the network problem, start a new thread about that problem. Does that sound good to you?
Micah, That sounds great. I will continue on this thread untill the spyware \virus issues are all checked. It's getting kinda late now I try starting tomorrow. Have a good evening. newtech
Micah,
Here is the first hijack this log from computer #3.

"Weatherbug" is considered "adware". You may wan to to uninstall it - it's your choice.

To uninstall WeatherBug from "Add/Remove Programs" in the windows Control Panel. If you run into problems removing WeatherBug, contact the vendor.

Do not uninstall WeatherBug if you value the service that it offers and can accept the advertisements.

If you decide to uninstall, you will be taken to the vendor's web site for a survey, asking why you uninstalled the software. The uninstall program may leave a folder with a few files on your system that you have to remove manually:

c:\Program files\AWS <– folder
(just delete the whole "AWS" folder)

If you remove Weatherbug, fix the next item with Hijack This!:

O16 - DPF: {2B96D5CC-C5B5-49A5-A69D-CC0A30F9028C} (MiniBugTransporterX Class) - http://download.weatherbug.com/minibug/tri…Transporter.cab?

If you uninstall Weatherbug, please reboot afterwards to complete the uninstall.

After fixing all the items with Hijacjk This!, and rebooting, find and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\image.dll

It may be "hidden".

Then, reboot once more and post a new log into this thread.

From a previous post:

Let me tell you a little about this problem. I discovered that turning off this (computer at station #3 )computers firewall I could ping it succesfully

Just out of curiosity, what kind of "firewall" does that machine have?
Hello Micah,

I talked to Brandon about weatherbug and he wants to keep it, so I left it alone. the other instructions you gave I followed. After letting hijack this fix those other problems I couldn't find C:\windows\image.dll. I guess fixing it also removed it.

You asked what kind of firewall is on this computer. It is the windows XP internet connection firewall.
Here is the latest hijack this log, I just noticed that there were several backup files in the hijack this folder, how long do you recommend keeping them? On Greg's computer (#4) I don't recal any backups being saved what do you think?

This log looks good.

I think I missed one minor item last time.

Fix this:

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Add animation to IncrediMail Style Box - C:\PROGRA~1\INCRED~1\bin\resources\WebMenuImg.htm

If "Incredimail" is no longer installed on that PC.

About the "backups". Since they are very small files, I wouldn't be too concerned. I'd say after you've "fixed" things with Hijack This! and used the PC for several weeks with no problems, then you probably could safely delete the backups. It's your call. Most of the time "fixing" the wrong thing will cause immeadiate problems. And I am extremely careful about what I tell people to "fix". I don't take what I do on this forum lightly. I treat each person's PC as if it were my own. I haven't wrecked anyone's PC yet, and I don't intend to start now. :)

About Weatherbug. My personal opinion is a person would be better off getting a Weather alert radio from Radioshack and putting it by the PC.

I look at it this way. Windows is like building a tower of dominoes. The more programs you have running, the higher the tower of dominoes gets. And if just one of those dominoes gets "out of line", the whole tower can come crashing down.

I try to keep my "startup" items down to a bare minimum. The only things I have running that aren't "required" are a small program to keep AOL from booting me off if I leave my PC for more that 15 minutes, Pop-up Stopper Free, and Cookiewall. And my Lexmark printer/scanner has some things that are loaded at startup.

Alrighty…. So, I guess we're ready for the next PC's log file?
