Hi Noviciate- I've done everything I can think of to break it and it seems to be working fine on both accounts. Only remaining issue is the shelliconhiddenwindow program end pop-up and dwwin.exe error on shutdown. Sometimes get the linksysagent one too. Mike
I really only started noticing it after SP3 update, but it may have been there longer. Music Match has been on the PC for long time. If it looks like it is related, I can uninstall MM.
Given you can't tell exactly when it started, it's a little difficult to pinpoint the cause, but it's possible that something isn't totally compatible with SP3. Music Match has caused issues in the past, but there's no knowing whether it is the cause on this occasion. As it doesn't seem to have been to much of an issue, i'd just accept that it's how your PC is. You could try uninstalling everything, one program at a time, and rebooting and shutting down the PC to identify the culprit, but i'm not sure it's worth the hassle. Sadly this is pretty much the only way I could identify the cause. The linksysagent file is probably a component of Linksys EasyLink Advisor 1.5 (1010). Assuming that this is important to your router, which i'm guessing you have from a little research into LELA, you'll probably have to live with this one. You'll have a better idea than me exactly what this program does. dwwin.exe is an error reporting tool from Microsoft, which I think you can disable to stop the error messages, but again i'm not sure if it's worth bothering about. If you want to shut down this one, let me know and i'll explain how.
I'm good with the current errors. Will revisit what I really think needs to be on the PC and uninstall whatever does not make the list. If the errors go away, great. If not, I'll live. Everything really appears to be working well. I turned the windows restore back on and the first time I restarted, I got a blue screen that said I had to restart and said something about dumping physical memory. I didn't take the time to read the whole thing. Just powered off. Came up OK and everything still seems to work. Rebooted again and all was good. Do you think my PC is going to live now? Thanks again. Mike

Sums up my PC philosophy.

Don't you just love computers! As long as this was a one-off, go with the first quote above.

The only thing I see that needs addressing is your version of Sun Java - there's a newer version out. You get the entirely free "Update Sun Java" set of instructions:

You are running an old version of Sun Java which needs updating:
  • Go here and click on the Windows XP/Vista/2000/2003 Offline link in the Windows section near the top.
  • Save the file somewhere accessible.
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any entries that refer to Java 2 Runtime Environment and then reboot your PC.
  • Navigate to and delete the following folder, if it exists: C:\Program Files\Java.
  • Finally double click the installation file that you downloaded earlier.
  • I suggest that you save the installation file, as long as you have the disc space, as it will save you downloading it again should you need to reinstall for some reason. You can also use it on any other computers you have to save bandwidth.

Given the amount of stuff you have running at boot-up, you might like to give the following a run-out:

Download and run StartUp Inspector.
This program will help you to decide exactly what programs you disable from running at startup.
The Readme.txt file included has instructions on how to use it.

Other than the above, you're done. Some bedtime reading: This is a very good tutorial about keeping your computer safe and secure on the internet.
OK. Got the new Java. Removed many startup items. Will read up and plug security holes where needed. All is good. Really appreciate everything. What you guys (and gals?) do is incredible. Thanks again. Mike
