I am getting pop-ups, even when not online so I ran AVG and it says something about a bunch of Trojan horses, and when I try to heal, it says error.

Hope you can tell me if something is wrong, and what to do. Thanks.

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++==
You are as infected as I have ever seen.

It looks like you have been infected by a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

Its very possible that anything could have been installed on your computer by the remote attacker, including opening other backdoors and installing rootkits. While we can attempt to clean what we see in your logs, we can't guarantee that your computer will be completely in the clear since we have no way of knowing that has been done to the computer. Your computer could be completely compromised at this moment. It may be prudent to backup your information, reformat, and reinstall.

More information on Remote Access Trojans can be found
here

I suggest you do the following immediately:
  • Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords – for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passords and transaction information.

If, however, you decide that the computer is not used for any sensitive work, or if you do not wish to reformat at this time, I can help you clean your computer to the best of my abilities.

But you should seriously consider a format and reinstall. As infected as this machine is removing some of this may have other side effects.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let me know what you decide to do in your next post.

Please let me know what you decide to do.
Alright, how can I format and reinstall it? I have the CD with vista on it. This will delete the virus completely and all my files right? Can these nasty things spread to the other 2 computers over my network? I have disconnected it for now and I am using a clean computer. ALSO could you PLEASE recommend any software that will help keep these nasty things off my computer, it can be free or not. I have gotten help on another account when this was Tom Coyote, and as always you guys are very helpful, Thanks!
Here's an article on how to install/reformat Vista.
A clean install is the same as formatting.

The first thing after you have Vista up and running is get an anti virus program in place. I'll list 2 free good ones.

Be certain automatic updates is turned on. - Or if you like to do it manually be sure to visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This requires internet explorer to do so.

This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
You can download the MVPS Hosts File and see a HOSTS file tutorial here :
This website also contains useful tips, and links to other resources and utilities.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click on the Security tab
3. Click the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click on Default Level and click Ok
5. Click on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

6. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Here's a site with great advise on how to AVOID malware. Much easier to do than removing it.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
Ok, I did an install…but it made a folder called "Windows.old" in my hard drive….I downloaded Avast and it is finding a bunch of the Trojans in this folder, what do I do? Can these infect the rest of my PC?

but it made a folder called "Windows.old

I'm not sure why you did that but…It has all the infections in it you had before you did this. It's no wonder Avast had found all the infections it's telling you about. The reason to reformat is to wipe everything out and start fresh.

Can these infect the rest of my PC?

YES They can infect the rest of your PC all over again. Alls you would need to do is click any file that is infected and it will start all over again. Please remember you had backdoor Trojans on that machine. There's no telling sometimes what else was placed on the machine. Once again that's why we wipe everything out when starting over.

I would Delete that folder called windows old. You may need to boot into safe mode to do so. Would be the safest way.

Safe mode if you should need it.
1.Restart your computer.
2.When the computer starts you will see your computer's hardware being listed. When you see this information start to gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows Vista Advanced Boot Options.
3.Select the Safe Mode option using the arrow keys.
4.Then press the enter key on your keyboard to boot into Vista Safe Mode.
5. When Windows starts you will be at a typical logon screen. Logon to your computer and Vista will enter Safe mode.
Deleted. 54GB of files gone. Would this have gotten rid of the Trojans? What else do I need to do? Running another Avast Scan now. Thanks so much you've stopped me from :pullhair: . I :notworthy: in thanks.
As long as that entire folder was deleted successfully ? And a fresh install of Vista you should be clean now.
Make sure your recycle bin gets emptied.

Now follow what I said about a few things to add to your arsenal to help protect you further.

Just let me know everything is OK now so I may close this topic.
Ok, AVG is not finding anything, no pop-ups… Is there a good anti-virus program that has a firewall to help block trojans and help remove them? Thanks for all the help.
