Slow computer, I turned on using F8 and selected "use last known good configuration", which seemed to help with speed, virtumonde is now quarantined in spydoctor. My browser had been hijacked to "Anti virus 2009" and some other unknown sites.
Upon restart of computer I am getting "start up error loading c:\windows\system32\vehotora.dll.

I have followed instructions in self help for malware removal under antivirus 2008.
I have done spydoctor scan and quarantined virtumonde, I have done ERUNT1.1, ATF CLEANER, MALWAREBYTES ANIT MALWARE and am including the log file for this after hijack log.

Thank you so much in advance!!

here is my hijack log.

Hello jackiew and welcome back to the forums here at WTT.

:welcome:

MalwareBytes' cleaned up much of the infection. But you have some leftovers, causing the error you mentioned, and what looks like some still active Malware. Let's go with combofix next.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Hi Thanks for the quick response!
I downloaded and ran combo fix here is the log….although when the system rebooted I still got the message - START UP ERROR LOADING c:\windows\system32\vehotora.dll module not found.

I will restart again and let you know if it happens again.

Great, glad it's running better. The next thing I think you need to address here is the fact that there is no Anti-Virus program on here. Is there a reason for this? With several free-for-home-use ones out there is no excuse not to. I would advise you to install one as soon as possible. Here are a couple of suggestions.

AVG AntiVirus – Free
Avast Antivirus Home Version–Free
Antivir Personal - Free

Install only one!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With that in mind, let's do a Kaspersky online scan.
Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Post a new HJT log and also let me know how it's running.
My son said he had zone alarm installed??? anyhow I uninstalled that, seems like it wasn't working and installed AVG free. Had a bit of a problem with my wireless connection so I couldn't get online connection, had to turn off windows firewall?? But have put it back on, is that ok?
Kaspersky found no threats. Log here, and new HJL:
Will wait for your ok, thanks so much!!
Think you're OK, as long as it's running well. Zone Alarm was running only as a Firewall on this PC. You need both a Firewall and an Anti-Virus. AVG is good. You can always re-install Zone Alarm as they have a free version. The Windows Firewall is OK but not as good as a 3rd party Firewall. I'll advise a couple others below.
We can remove combofix and it's associated files/folders.
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
Update Java Runtime:
[external image: Posted Image] Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems
Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")
Thanks Dave for all your help. I have downloaded and installed all programs you suggested. The only thing I noted….was that I found no "JRE" at all in the add/remove programs list. The only thing I saw was "JAVA ™ 6 update 3 and update 5 " I did not delete these, but did download the JRE as you suggested. Should I have deleted those first? I now have showing the 2 updates that were previously there as above, and also the downloaded update11. I hope this is correct. Thanks again for all your help, without this site I would have been tearing my hair out for days!!
