I'm trying to help a friend whose HP713c PC is running WinXPsp2 with only 256Mb RAM (HP have quoted too much to upgrade and she can't afford to replace the PC yet); there is 67% free on the HDD C: partition. I'm some hours drive away so ran a remote session to run some housekeeping. I used EasyCleaner v2 to cleanup Temp Internet Files, Cookies, Internet History, Unnecessary Files, and Registry. I then ran Disk Cleanup and then Defragmenter. I confirmed that DNS Client and Indexing services were not running. I downloaded and ran ATF Cleaner. I downloaded and installed Malwarebytes Anti-Malware but failed to update it as I could not control Zone Alarm Security Alert remotely and when I used TaskManager to end the MBAM Update application it left the MBAM process running preventing my starting it again. I downloaded and ran HiJackThis v2.0.2.

The PC is used primarily for Embroidery pattern design (using Husqvana Embroidery 4D suite) with email and some browsing as secondary uses.

I couldn't attach the HiJackThis log so have inserted it below.

Any help on using this to cleanup the PC would be much appreciated.

Here is the HiJackThis log file:

Hi marli, welcome to the forum.

Please be advised, as I'm still in training, all my replies will have to be approved by a teacher or expert before I can post them. This may cause some delays, but I will do my best to keep them as short as possible.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
I will post back soon with additional instructions.

Thanks
Hi kangaroo,

It would be better if the user with the infected computer could participate directly in this thread. As you've seen, some tools need internet access and you can't do that remotely. At this point it is unknown what tools, if any, we will need.

We can start with this. Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall this program, if present

all programs with Starware in the name

Next, Open HJT, run a system scan only, check mark these lines if present

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://as.starware.com/dp/search?x=wKX1ILE…rtYaSJiQ9Aovus=
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CA356D79-679B-4b4c-8E49-5AF97014F4C1} - C:\Program Files\Starware353\bin\Starware353.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: Starware Recipe Toolbar (UK) - {D49E9D35-254C-4c6a-9D17-95018D228FF5} - C:\Program Files\Starware353\bin\Starware353.dll (file missing)

Close all other browsers/windows, click fix checked, close HJT

Open windows explorer (right click the Start button and click Explore)

Navigate to this folder C:\Program Files
  • Click the +sign beside Program Files
  • Check for the presence of this folder Starware353
  • If found, right click the folder and select delete
  • Accept an warning you may recieve

Next, Run MBAM
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Please post the malwarbytes log in your next reply.

Download and save to your desktop, RSIT by random/random
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (will be maximized) and info.txt (will be minimized)

Thanks
Hi oldman960, Thanks for the reply. I'll go to my friend's home next Tuesday and do as you suggest. She is very reluctant to do such things on her own and I would rather do it for her than add this stress. I'll post the results as soon as I can. Your help is much appreciated.
Hi kangaroo,

Please copy and paste the logs into your replies.

I don't see any malware in the logs, just a lttle slyware. Any other symptoms besides running slow?

Is Zone Alarm the free or the Pro version?

This is a required Hijackthis fix

Open Hijackthis, run a system scan only, check mark this line if present ,

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

Close all other browsers/windows, click fix checked, close HJT

There are a few optional fixes you can do that may improve system preformance. These fixes will not remove the program, will just stop it from starting at startup. A link and some info as to what it does is provided for each.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\System32\igfxtray.exe
http://www.systemlookup.com/lists.php?list…IgfxTray&s=
This can be accessed via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Share-to-Web Namespace Daemon] c:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Share-to-Web\hpgs2wnd.exe
http://www.systemlookup.com/lists.php?list…2wnd.exe&s=
Can be started from Start -> Programs

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
http://www.systemlookup.com/lists.php?list…task.exe&s=

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
http://www.systemlookup.com/lists.php?list…Launcher&s=
When running, Adobe Reader will load faster, not required

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe"
http://www.systemlookup.com/lists.php?list…ateSched&s=
Can be updated manually

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe
http://www.systemlookup.com/lists.php?list…etection&s=
Checks for Works updates

O4 - Global Startup: hp center.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
http://www.systemlookup.com/lists.php?list…p+center&s=

To impliment the optional fixes, just add the ones you wish to keep from running at startup to the required fix.

Please let me know how the system is and post a new HJT (hijackthis) log.

Thanks
Hi oldman960,

Yes please (to still needing help)!

You asked about the version of Zone Alarm: it is the Free, Basic edition.

I've only today been able to get back to running your last suggestions with HiJackThis. I decided to fix all the optional items you suggested as well as the required one.

Here is the new log:

Thanks heaps for your patience with this. The computer is booting faster so we seem to be making progress.

In case we're not in touch in the next day or so, have a happy and safe Christmas!
Hi Kangaroo,

Merry Christmas to you also. It's good we made some progress.

I'm not sure what HP quoted for a ram upgrade, but the ram for this machine can be found at Crucial very cheap. This is for a 713k, the 713a was the same, so I'm sure the 713c will also be

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp…paq&cat=RAM

Big box stores should be very close in price or even a local online dealer.

I don't believe this to be malware related, but we can do an online scan just to be sure.

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET:
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner

(Note: You must use Internet Explorer for this scan.)

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is Checked.
  • Click Scan.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. We will need this later.
Please post back with the ESET log and a new HJT log.

Thanks
Hi oldman960, Yes, I'm still here; the past week has been bedlam around here with family and grand kids demanding attention and a couple of storms that rendered our access road impassable for a couple of days. To boot our neighbour had a grandchild born yesterday and we had quite a celebration last evening which put a few other things on hold. I've just farewelled the last of the family and am getting back to all my tasks. Should have the scan arranged today or tomorrow and will get the log posted to you. Thank you for your patience.
