Greetings, all.

I've just got hit with something nasty and I'm hoping you folks can help me. At the moment, I can only effectively use my computer in safe mode. Trying to run it normally brings up a"Services and Controller app has encounted a problem" error within a minute or two of booting up. Sometimes I can work for a few minutes if I don't close that dialog. If I do close it the computer locks up or crashes immediately after.

Sometimes the computer does not even make it to the "select user" screen before it locks up. Sometimes it makes it to the desktop but not all of the icons get populated before it locks up. Sometimes Everything looks fine for a few minutes and then the "Services and Controller" message pops up, and then I'm done.

I've tried running Kapersky Anti-virus 7 and Ad-aware 2007 and neither of these found anything.

I've noticed that even in safe mode, when I run IE and click on a link, I go to a random advertising page first. If I use the back button and then click on the same link a second time, then I actually go to the page I was expecting.

I tried using system restore to get to a prior save point, and I can never make it that far in normal mode without locking up. In safe mode, I can get in and select a restore point. I get to the "confirm restore point" screen, but the "Next" button that would actually kick off the process does not seem to function. (the "Back" and "Cancel" buttons work fine though). Because of this I have not been able to revert to a previous save point.

Below is my HijackThis log. Please help if you can!

Thanks!!

Hello and welcome to the forum.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Note: You may have a blank screen for up to 30 seconds.
Please download FixWareout from this site:
http://www.4shared.com/file/40178743/91522…Fixwareout.html

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text that will open (report.txt) Please save this file, you'll need to post it with a new HijackThis log.

Next:

Now lets check some settings on your system.
Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections

Then right click on your Default Connection
Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
Left click on Properties
Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two

Reboot and "copy/paste" the text file (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
First off, Thank you *so much* for helping me with this.

Next, after perfoming the steps outlined above, there seems to be no change in my computers behavior. I still get random lock-ups and get the "Services and Controller App" message when I do not boot in safe mode.

Here is the new Hijackthis report:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Alrighty.

Attempting to follow this step has been an adventure.

When running ComboFix, I discovered that Windows Recovery Console is not installed on my machine.

When Combofix attempted to install it I received a message to the effect of "failed to download required files so I can't install the console, but I'll perfom the scan anyway".

The program went through it's paces, and went to reboot, but I did not catch it quickly enough and it tried to boot normally instead of in safe mode, and the computer locked up on the ComboFix reboot and never made it to the desktop. I had to power off.

I rebooted in safe mode and it continued with part 2, and I have the log, which I will include below.

I thought the error message while trying to download the Win Recovery Console was odd, so I thought that perhaps I had booted in the version of safe mode which did not have networking, which would not allow me to get to the internet.

For that reason, I verified that I had an internet connection and ran ComboFix a second time.

It ran into the same "Cant download files" issue, but completed successfully otherwise.
I caught the safemode on the reboot, and the second part of the second run completed successfully, and I included the second log below as well.

My machine did not come with Windows XP installation disks, so at this point, I attempted to install Win Recovery Console on my own by visiting the MS site, and I discovered that I can not download *anything* off the MS site. I get "The page cannot be displayed. The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings." and then I get the MS "thank you for downloading your files" page. (nice slap in the face, that!)

Something came up on the MS site that said they were doing a new way of managing file downloads, did I want to try using "SilverLight". Since the primary didn't work, I attempted to load their new download manager. I download their install package, and when it ran it failed with the following message:

Message ID 1601: Microsoft Windows Installer could not be accessed. Contact your support personnel to verify that Windows Installer is registered correctly, or follow the instructions here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555175). (I did attempt to follow method 1, but the unregister and register commands only made the command prompt go away. There was no indication that it did anything and it did not change anything. I followed the instructions from method 4: "Go to "Start" -> "Run" , type "services.msc" and press on "Enter" button" and everything looked as they said it should.)

I was thwarted in every attempt at downloading and reinstalling a version of Microsoft Windows Installer.

Failing this, I found a non-ms site that had an ISO image of the Win Recovery Console disk:
http://www.instantfundas.com/2007/09/insta…-hard-disk.html
and I tried to follow it's instructions to create the disk, but it looks like a file they reference in their instructions is not on the disk image.

(I have created a CD from the ISO image listed above but still don't know how to use it.

So, since I can't seem to get anything useful from the MS site, and I can't figure out how to install Windows Recovery Console or why the Windows Installer seems broke, I am stuck.

Please take a look at the following logs from Combo fix:

My computer is still behaving as it was before. Attempting to boot in non-safe mode *almost always* results in a lock up after selecting the user but before the desktop appears. On the very rare occasion that it does not, the message about "Services and controller app has encountered a problem" appears after a short while. Internet links still often spawn advertising instead of the expected page.

Safe mode boots consistantly but also experiences the same ads from internet links.
Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{03C6C404-DDF3-483D-B616-6C03FC0B9E78}: NameServer = 85.255.113.91;85.255.112.9

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.113.91;85.255.112.9

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Next:
Click Start> Run> type in CMD tap enter key
Copy/Paste or type in: ipconfig /flushdns
If you are typing this in, note the space between the g /f
It needs to be there.

Now lets check some settings on your system.
Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections

Then right click on your Default Connection
Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
Left click on Properties
Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
Note: Do this for all Network Connections
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I am not able to accomplish what you suggested.

I can "Fix checked" in Hijackthis on the 5 items that you mention and it looks like they were removed successfully, but then if I immediately scan again, I see the same 5 elements are there.

Likewise, I can do the ipconfig /flushdns and see the reply that the cache was cleared but when I go to my network connection and attempt to change the TCP/IP configurations to "Obtain DNS Servers Automatically" it looks like it does it, then if I immediately go back and check they have the old settings again.

If I boot in Safe mode without networking, I am able to use hijackthis and the 5 elements remain deleted, but then the next time I boot up with networking those 5 entries are back.

My machine will now consistantly boot in non-safe mode, but locks up after less than a minute and can not even sucessfully close down without locking up. I still see the original error box "Services and Controller…" within a minute of loging in in non-safe mode.

Here is the latest Hijackthis log which I suspect is the same as the one before:

I look forward to seeing your next suggestions. I am getting quite an education out of all this.

As always, thank you for your help!!
Those 017's are whats causing the redirection hijack.

Copy/paste the text in the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the text in the box below, then click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text. Now release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'. Now over the empty Notepad box, right click your mouse again, and select 'paste' and you will have copied and pasted the text.

File::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\msqpdxwavviekj.sys

Driver::
msqpdxwavviekj

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet003\Services\msqpdxserv.sys]

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:
1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save …

[external image: Posted Image]

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Save the results log

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Next:
Click Start> Run> type in CMD tap enter key
Copy/Paste or type in: ipconfig /flushdns
If you are typing this in, note the space between the g /f
It needs to be there.

Now lets check some settings on your system.
Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections

Then right click on your Default Connection
Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
Left click on Properties
Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
Note: Do this for all Network Connections
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file and the results log into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Things are looking *GREAT*

I booted up in regular mode a couple times without error.
I shut down a couple times without incident.
My links on the internet do not take me to ads.

After running combofix, the hijackthis did not have those nasty 17's (so I did not need to delete them) and TCPIP options on all my network connections were clean.

Here is the combofix log:

Please let me know if it is safe to go back in the water.

Also, I would like to get the Windows Recovery Console installed on my machine. Is it safe to run ComboFix again to attempt to get it? (Do you think it will work this time? I did not work the time when I dropped the text file on to it, but it might have attempted to get it before applying whatever fix it got). If that doesn't work do you have any suggestions on how to get it if I still have trouble getting MS files directly off their site?

Thank you so much for your time and help!!

Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]

Log looks good to me :D

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
