Hi,

I read the Hijackthis Log posting instructions.

I am currently traveling through South America and I it seems that I have unfortunately obtained a Latin virus. I know it's Latin because it speaks to me in Spanish confused1.gif After starting up the laptop, it gives me two options, "start windows normally (default)" and "Su computadora ha estado infectado por un virus de la ultima generacion." I'm guessing that means that my computer has been infected by a virus of the latest generation?

So definitely having problems with my XP Home account. As far as I can tell, every application is "restricted by administrator." I can't even start up a game of Hearts. I can't directly start up IE or Firefox. Instead, I either have to use Safe Mode with Networking or I have to indirectly start up IE via clicking on the Windows Update link, and then using that window to google and whatnot.

I had a temporary solution by creating a new admin account and transfering files from the old account, to the new. It worked out pretty well for a couple days, as there was no administrator blocking, but it seems that my luck has run out and this morning, the infection found my new account (I was not connected to the internet at the time it found me).

Here is a list of things I have tried in order (all done in Safe Mode since I can't start any application in Normal Windows Mode,):
System restore (there was no restore point prior to the infection, so I was not able to complete this)
Reboot
Spybot: Search & Destroy
Malwarebytes
SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition
reboot
reboot again
and again…

Here is my Hijackthis log:

Hi rhyzel,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Let's try this first.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key repeatedly;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual user account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here. We also need you to post a new HijackThis log
Hi Tomk,

Thanks for the prompt response. Just to give you my update, I am traveling south through Chile today, so after this response, I won't be able to check my email until tomorrow at the earliest.

As for solving my computer problem, here is what I did:

1) Downloaded SDFix from another computer to transfer it to my laptop via USB drive.
2) After attempting to run SDFix in Safe Mode from the infected user account, it wouldn't allow me due to "administrator restrictions."
3) I created another account and was able to run SDFix in Safe Mode and it went through the entire process just fine.
4) I tried to run Hijackthis on the same user account, but it wouldn't let me install the program.
5) I created another user account and was able to run Hijackthis in Safe Mode and save a log file.

Here is the current Hijackthis log file:

Thanks again for the help Tomk,

-Cale
rhyzel,

Are you able to post the SDFix report?

Also,

Please download SmitfraudFix

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
Hi Tomk,

Here´s an update for you. For the first time, I actually saw the initial error message. I was prompted with a ¨critical system error¨ and I was given like 7 seconds to save all my work before the computer shut itself off. After the reboot, I am denied access to everything.

I´m sure you have taken this into account, but I am wondering if these programs will only detect the malware if I run the programs on an account that has been infected? If that´s the case, I don´t know what to do, since I can´t run any type of software on an infected account.

On another note, the account I used SDFix and Hijackthis on has been infected. That means that I couldn´t open any log files. I created yet another account and ran all 3 programs in Safe Mode. Here is the log file of each one:

I hope that´s everything. Thanks again Tomk,

rhyzel,

The most likely types of malware that would cause your symptom is a Trojan and/or Smitfraud. I believed SDFix and SmitfraudFix were the two programs most likely to take them out. We haven't found the cause yet. Now, unfortuanately, we are going to need to do some blind hunting.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

And

Disable resident protections (Antivirus…); you'll re-enable them after the scan

Download Lop S&D < here

Double-click Lop S&D.exe
Choose the language, then choose Option 1 (Search)
Wait till the end of the scan
Post the log which is created: (%SystemDrive%\lopR.txt)
Hi Tomk,

Unfortunately, it seems that I didn´t have Windows Recovery Console installed on my laptop. I ran the diagnostic software anyways with no problems. I will try downloading the WRC software now and transfer it to my laptop. I don´t have internet access to my laptop right now and even if I did have something available, I don´t know if I would be able to connect due to the trojan.

Here are the log files I got:

ComboFix:

rhyzel, Good job. That should have stopped your spanish messages. I'm not seeing anything that should be stopping your internet access. Please shut your computer down completely. Restart and try to access the internet with both Internet Explorer and Firefox. Let me know what happens. Any messages. Whatever.
Hey Tomk,

I should reiterate where I am receiving this spanish message and what exactly is going wrong with my machine. I am getting the message upon bootup (and I still am as of now). I have two options.

1) Su computadora esta infectado con un virus de la ultima generacion.
2) Startup Windows (default).

This is also where I can press F8 to use other options of booting up (safe mode, VGA mode, etc…).

I shouldn´t have said that I don´t have internet access, but more so, no access to Firefox nor IE. I don´t have access to anything (can´t even play solitare). When I do click on an application, I get the error message ¨Blocked by administrator.¨ I have been communicating with you via an internet cafe, transfering files to USB and dumping them on the laptop on a new account if the old one has been infected. So far, I have ran everything you wanted on a single account (in Safe Mode) without the trojan detecting my new account. A few days ago, I was able to get internet access on the laptop via starting up Windows Updater and I could use the URL bar to connect to anything I wanted to. As of now, I don´t have access to a wireless router.

After trying each fix, I reconnect to an account that has been infected and check to see if anything has changed. So far, nothing has been fixed, if anything, it might be getting a wee bit worse. After connecting to an infected user account so many times in Safe Mode, it seems that the trojan has blocked access to applications in Safe Mode as well (only on the older accounts, I can still access applications on newer accounts both in Safe Mode AND Normal Windows Mode, at least, until the trojan finds the newer accounts).

I hope all has been explained. If you have any other questions PLEASE don´t hesitate to ask. I appreciate all the time you´ve put into this already.

Thanks,

Cale
rhyzel,

The file Win2x.exe contains the phrase.

Su PC esta infestada por un virus de ultima generacion

Seeing as how it was deleted by ComboFix, I thought that it would stop the message. I'm obviously wrong.

Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

  • Right click on gmer.zip and select Extract All….
  • Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
  • Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK.
  • Click Next. It will start extracting.
  • Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.
  • Double click on gmer.exe to run it.
  • Select the Rootkit tab.
  • On the right hand side, check all the items to be scanned, but leave Show All box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard.
  • Open Notepad or a similar text editor.
  • Paste the clipboard contents into the text editor.
  • Save the Gmer scan log and post it in your next reply.
  • Close Gmer.
  • Open Command Prompt by going to Start > Run and type in cmd. Press Enter.
  • In Command Prompt, type in net stop gmer. Press Enter.
  • Type in exit to close Command Prompt.

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.
Hey Tomk, I just tried using the link for gmer and it seems the file is bad (only 155kb in size). I went to download.com and downloaded the file there. Here is the current version and date it was updated: GMER 1.0.14.14536 6-9-2008 Also, the scan log was just a little too big to attach as one complete .txt file, so I split them up into two different posts. Here are the results: Thanks, -Cale
rhyzel, That is very strange. I haven't seen a Gmer report that looks like the one you provided. I don't see what the problem is but I don't even know if it is providing anything useful. I'm going to have a few more people look at what's going on and see if we can get you some resolution.
Thanks for honest response. The only thing I can think of that is making the log worthless, is the fact that I am on an unaffected account in Safe Mode. I just can´t start any of these applications if I am not in an unaffected account :pullhair: I will be close to an internet cafe for a while. Let me know what you find out. Thanks Tomk, -Cale
rhyzel,

First off, you need to notify Geeks to Go that you are being helped here.

Secondly, I need to give you a warning:

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    c:\documents and settings\Test\ .exe
    c:\documents and settings\Cale\ .exe

    Folder::

    Registry::

    Driver::
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
