Hi,

I am tracking down some problems with my daughters machine. It is an old eMachine T3410 running Windows XP SP3.
She started complaining it was going going very slow and freezing. It is running AVG 8, so I did a full scan which flags an SHeur2.PL infection in
C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe
This is marked as a white listed object which seems to mean you can't remove it.
This might be a false positive, still waiting to here on that.
I did a quick netstat -a to find hundreds of sockets open to random machines in the net, so I blocked all internet access at my router for her machine.
I also noticed odd behaviour from the browser, when I searched on Google I'd get the results, but when I clicked on a link it would not take me to the page, it get's redirected to random search engines with similar results rather than the destination. I checked for the usual toolbars and add ins, but there was nothing obvious there.

I've downloaded ERUNT and made my backup and have run off a HijackThis log. Would be great to have someone more knowledgeable look over it. I've included it below.

Thanks miar

Hello

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.
Ok, well here is some interesting behaviour. The infection has messed with AVG, blocking the update function and causing AVG to crash when running a scan. It also seems to 'know' about combofix. The browser works fine on ordinary sites, but if I try to access a page like tech forums from this machine or a page with combo fix on it, I get redirected to some other search page. I downloaded the recovery console pack from MS (eMachines OEM computer installation of XP Home so no disk). Dragged the icon on top of combofix and nothing happens. Started combofix manually and nothing happens. I checked the process list and I see several combofix processes running, but I get no window and it never seems to start. I tried out the exe on another machine and it runs as expected. So it seems that the infection is actively defending itself against known cleaning methods. So what to do now ? Thanks miar
Hello

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    [external image: Posted Image]

    [external image: Posted Image]

  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    ———————————————————–

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      ———————————————————–

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    ———————————————————–

  • Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**
Thanks, that did the trick.

Combofix detected root kit activity rebooted, scanned and rebooted again.
It deleted some programs
MyWebSearch
Instant Messenger Names
FunWebProducts

It also looks like userinit.exe is infected.

Here is the Combofix logfile generated.

Thanks miar

Hello

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
c:\windows\system32\stus.exe

FCopy::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\userinit.exe | c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe

Folder::

Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{d1f9b6e1-ab3f-11da-934e-806d6172696f}]

KillAll::

Driver::

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.
Not sure that went exactly as planned. Created the CFScript file and dragged it onto ComboFix.
Everything started normally and scanning was underway. It then said that it was going to reboot.

I then got a pop-up msg saying
"Catchme.cfexe Application failed to initialize because windows is shutting down"

I click ok to this pop-up, but nothing happened. Icons from desktop were gone, ctrl-alt-del did not bring up window, waited a few minutes and no change.
I had to manually power down with the power button.

On reboot, ComboFix appeared to start and prepared a log which is included here.

Thanks miar

Hi, Ok sorry for the delay. I had terrible trouble getting Kapersky to complete it's scan. Kept causing Firefox an IE to hang in the middle of the scan. Anyway finally got it done. Hi,

Moveit required a reboot to remove some of the files. I had to power down manually again to get it to reboot, as it had become unresponsive after MoveIt initial execution. Here is the Moveit log followed by a new HijackThis log.

Thanks miar

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

*ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

*NoScript - Addon for Firefox that stops all scripts from running on websites. Stops malicious software from invading via flash, java, javascript, and many other entry points.

*Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories. This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

*ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.

* Recovery Console - Recent trends appear to indicate that future infections will include attacks to the boot sector of the computer. Excellent ! Thanks very much for all your clear concise help and instructions. I will disable the spyware part of AVG and install your recommendation below. I am a big fan of Firefox too and I use that exclusively. My daughter has both installed but was using IE, which I know is full of holes. It used to be quite difficult to remove IE as it is pretty heavily woven into windows. Is that still the case ? or can I remove IE completely ? I checked her browser logs and she has pretty much only been doing facebook, myspace and msn msger, so picked up these infections from there. Cheers miar
IE is pretty tough to remove and I would not recommend doing it Yes we see a lot of facebook/msn infections lately, have to be real careful there
