Here is the log for HIghjack This. The virus was picked up on spyware doctor and cannot be removed. The PC is running very slowly opening pop up ads, in Firefox and IE7. It opens pop up ads in IE7 when I am using Firefox and opens Firefox ads when using IE. Machine is very slow to start and respond. I have tried running the Vundo Fix but nothing was detected.

Hi Aileen1979 and welcome to What the Tech :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:
  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use.
Be assured, any links I give are safe.
Extra note: Please be aware as I am still in training all of my fixes/posts require prior checking by a Expert. So some delays may be inevitable, please be patient and I will reply again asap.

In the meantime could you please carry out the following, thank you.

At present is is somewhat difficult for myself to research the the Hijackthis log posted as it appears Notepads word-wrap feature is enabled:

  • Click on Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Notepad
  • Click on Format ensure that Wordwrap is unchecked.
  • If it isn't, uncheck it.
Now post a new HijackThis log please.

Next:

I would like to view a list of currently installed software applications on you're PC. How to provide as follows:

Run HijackThis and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager…
  • Click Save list... and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.

Hi :)

Hi I should point out that this is not my own personal computer. I am helping out a member of my family in their home.

OK that is fine, thank you for informing myself.

Next:

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can attempt to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let myself know what you have decided to do in your next post.
Thank you for your help here. I will let them know about this ASAP. I cant get to the computer for a couple of days but I will report back to as soon as I am there. I suggested reformatting the OS but they cant find the disks that came with it 4 years ago. What would be the best suggestion there? I have exactly the same model of PC by the same makers and have my original OS installation CD would I be able to use mine?

You're welcome!

That is acceptable re when you can post back  , thank you for informing myself.

This is also acceptable and the Expert who I am working with appraised myself of this.
Hi :)

I will be reinstalling the OS this evening ( GMT time in the UK)

OK, I hope all goes well, remember any questions feel free to ask myself

All I will add is read this topic here as it may be of benefit :).
I have reinstalled Windows XP SP2 from the disk. We now have a clean slate. I did not back up any files to the D drive incase they were infected. The only minor problem I seem to be having is that it now seems to be saving files to the D:/ drive instead of the C:/ how can I change this?
Hi :)

The tutorial I posted as in regard to creating backups dealt mainly with non essential system files which are less likely to be infected. I apoligise that you did not understand this but no harm done either way I think.

Now as for the problem of the location files being saved to this is not actually malware related, the best advice I can give you is to create and post a new topic in this part of the forum:

Microsoft Windows™

By all means include a link back to this topic:

Please let myself know when you have read this and I will ask for this topic to be closed, thank you.
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
