Please - and Thank You - to anyone who can help and keep me from having to re-install from scratch.

Ok, so I am down to my last nerve with this computer. I hope I have everything you need. I have a fairly new Dell Vostro 1710, XP SP3. About 3 wks ago I started getting weird browser issues, pop-ups all the time, clearly History based targeted pop-ups. I have been slammed at work and did not do anything about it. Finally, IE 7.0 itself started acting up and I was forced to take the time to try and clean it up. I have tried the following, mostly in Safe Mode except where/when it wasn't possible:

- Remove/uninstall IE 7 using the spuninst method.
- Tried cleaning the system with the following apps:
1. AVG Free
2. ScanSpyWare
3. TrendMicro
4. VundoFix / VirtumundoBeGone
5. HiJackThis

With one (AVG) I couldn't even get it installed. The others have returned some results, I have worked through as much as I can. I have re-installed XP, SP3 successfully, not in a new partition, but that appears to be my next step. I have tried to re-install IE 7.0, with no luck.

Here's my HJT log:

When did the browser problems start ?

Run MBAM and see if this fixes your IE

1. Download IEFix, unzip it to your Desktop, and run it.
2. Click the Apply button.
3. You'll be prompted for the Operating System CD or the Service Pack Files location:
  • If you're using Windows XP, insert the Operating System CD. For OEM systems, point to the Operating System source path when prompted. If you've applied a Service Pack separately, you need to insert the Slipstreamed Operating System CD (if you have one) or point the installer to the ServicePack source path when prompted (see the image below). Mention the path as "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386" or "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles"
  • If you don't have the Windows installation CD, and if the installation source files are not present in the hard disk, you may click Cancel when you see a dialog similar to the image below. IEFix will continue with DLL registration part.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Restart Windows.
In the mix of my own attempts to resolve the issues, I have un-installed IE using the spunist file. I tried to re-install after doing a repair of the OS (XP), and while it would appear to install, when I tried to launch IE, it would immediately error out and close. So the last thing I did re: IE is uninstall it completely. I figured i needed to get the system clean before I tried to install again. Should I try the Installation again now?
Ok, I ran MBAM again - nothing found. I ran the install for IE 7.0 and rebooted. No icons created, no shortcuts. I tried to run iexplore from the Start / Run and it launched, or started to - and then it Encountered a problem and needs to close. IEFix does not support 7.0. What should I do next?
When I check the Event Viewer - It shows an NTDLL.DLL error. apparently those can be hard to fix. Should I post under a different forum list for this issue? Thanks so much for all your help !
Yeah go and post in the Windows forum as we got rid of your malware but there are tech problems there

  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Download OTCleanIt to your desktop and run it
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTCleanUp to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to beging the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Your using an old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, this can leave your pc open to vulnerabilities, you can update it here :
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

*ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

*NoScript - Addon for Firefox that stops all scripts from running on websites. Stops malicious software from invading via flash, java, javascript, and many other entry points.

*Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories. This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'

*ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.

* Recovery Console - Recent trends appear to indicate that future infections will include attacks to the boot sector of the computer. The installation of the Recovery Console in the computer will be our only defense against this threat. For more information and steps to install the Recovery Console see This Article. Should you need assistance in installing the Recovery Console, please do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.
ok I totally screwed up - I thought I could find and fix the errant file …ya, well have since turned my system into a very lovely not so useful doorstop. GRRRRRR…I went into the Recovery Console and renamed the file NTDLL.DLL to NTDLL.old. UH HUH, nice - now the system can't boot. I can't reinstall XP as it doesn't recognize a hard drive…nightmare. I can't do anything now…and the worst part is that it's ALL MY FAULT!!!! ok deep breath, where should I take this new issue? Windows XP forum, I guess?
