Poorly behaved PC .. Suspect Malware

Hello,

My daughter's PC (Dell Celeron XP SP3) has begun behaving very strangely. It was taking quite a while to boot, and when it did finally seem to be completely up it would hang. Seemed as if there was something very CPU intensive running, but I could never determine what it was because I could not get the machine to respond to to bring up the task manager. I re-booted into safe mode and ran AVG 8 scan and it removed three infections. Afterwards, I was able to reboot into full Windows mode, but the machine was still acting strangely. I was lucky enough to be able to get the Task Manager up, however, and I saw that TeaTimer.exe was using around 60% of the machine. I think this is part of Spybot SD, but I am not completely sure about this. Anyway, I also ran HJT 2, and below is the log. Can I get some assistance with this problem? Thanks in advance.

Hi Noviciate,

Well we have certainly changed things, but not for the better. I installed the Recovery console and I disabled AVG. ComboFix seemed to run properly, and it created the report pasted below. The problem is after I rebooted the PC seems to be on the way up. I see the PC wallpaper, but then it seems to stop there. No start bar, no desktop icons. I can get task manger to come up, and I can use it to shutdown and/or restart, but I cannot seem to get further than this. I even started in safe mode, but the same thing appears to be happening. Seems to be on the way, but then just stops short of the goal. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated. (Sorry for no hijack log. I was going to run it after the reboot)

Hi,

Well the explorer.exe did create my desktop as you suggested. I was unable to get ComboFix to run in normal mode though. I had to run it in safe mode. It seemed to delete a few things, but normal mode was still horribly slow after combo finished. Anyway, I was able to get hijackthis to run in normal mode. Thanks so much for the help. The PC seems a little bit better, but still not out of the woods. I rebooted after the Maware run. I still have to manually create the desktop. I have noticed that I can do it by running explorer, but it will also create if I manually kill PRISMSVR.exe (not sure why but I thought it was significant). Hi,

I think we're nearing the end of this now. I determined what software to uninstall to get those PRISM processes to stop. Now it all reboots quickly in normal mode, and everything appears to bu functional. I would just ask one more favor. Could you look over the HJT log below, and let me know if it seems normal?
