I have this posted in Techguy but they seem to be very busy with a lot of PC problems right now.

It started with some antivirus program that got on and immediately started down loading. Before I knew it, it was almost done. Some little ‘light House’ icon on my desktop. I Deleted it form my desk top, and then uninstalled it form add/remove programs. (in recycle bin it calls it an Antivirus Trigger 2.1 4kb), it is Still effecting my computer. I keep getting pop-ups constantly form Windows defender. The same thing. It keeps trying but cant seem to get a rid of it. Also a new tool bar on my internet Explorer that I do not like or trust, yet I can’t seem to get rid of it.

Windows Defender Name TrojanDownloader:Win32/Zlob.BAH

Category: Trojan Downloader
Description: This Program has potentially unwanted behavior
Advice: Review the Alert details to see why the software was detected. If you do like how the software operates or if you do not recognize and trust the publisher, consider blocking or removing the software.
Resources: process: pid: 2728
Summary: Application Execution change occurred.

Checkpoint: Running Processes

Action-Quarantine, it didn’t work.

Windows Internet Explorer has a new tool bar, Security toolbar with PC Security level indication of 5 little boxes, the first two are red with a warning of ‘Low’, then two green boxes with a green check mark in each, the first says ‘Remove Malware’ the second says ‘Scan for Spyware’.

My wife called me this morning at work. Her credit card called with unusual charges on her card. She immediately cancelled them. She does most of her shopping on line with our Home PC. I cant even seem to get on line on the house PC. I have coped the HJT log on a USB, and am sending this to you form work.

I currently have the house PC unplugged from the DSL line.

Thank you very much in advance for any help you can offer us with this challenge.

2 Days latter:

I decided to run an HJT log and compare it with an older HJT log I ran a few months back. A few things on the old were no longer there, but there were a lot of new stuff, nothing I could put my finger on except maybe..

Only the AvirTr seemed spacious.
I ran the HJT log again and put a check fix on 02 – BHO:AvirTrWarningBHO Class – {3A267370-079E-4af4-B986-77626B8E89DF} – C: Program Files\AvirTrsoftware\AvirTrWarning.dll (file missing)
And a check in fix 04 – HKCU\..\Run: [AvirTr] “C:\Program Files\AvirTrsoftware\AvirTr.exe”

This had no effect on anything and I still can’t get on line.

I would run Windows Defender and remove or quarantine, with no effect. The pop ups form windows Defender keep coming up every few seconds.
Internet explore keeps trying to change my start up page to ‘Blank”.
A new critical system warning popped up when I was running Malwarbytes’

“your system is probably infected with the latest version of Spyware.Cyberlog-X.”

Type: Spyware
Infectetion Length: 266,129 bytes
Risk: High
System Afected: Windows 2003, Windows XP, Windows Vista
Behavior: Spyware.CybertLog-X is a spyware program that monitors user activity, logs keystrokes, and track Websites visited.
Symptoms: Low Internet connection speed
Low system performance
Security center alerts
Strange pop up windows
Protection: click OK to download antispyware for Windows.

I only got this warning once so far and the other pop up from Defender that I was getting every few seconds, have stopped since I started running Malwarebyts, Hmmm.
Tried to start internet explorer and it’s still trying to change my IE homepage. I still can’t get on line.
Malwarbytes has finished the scan and found no malicious items. Hmmm.

Hi tedejc.

My name is revel and I will be working with you to resolve the issues you're experiencing.

As I am still in training, all of my instructions must be checked by one of our malware experts before they are given to you. Thus, there may be some delay in responding. I know that you would like your computer working as quickly as possible and I will work hard to see that happen.

Before we begin, please review these important notes:
  • The fixes are specific to your machine and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you that your machine is clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't understand the instructions, please stop and ask for clarification before proceeding.
  • Continue to reply to this topic; do not start another.

I will be back as soon as possible with instructions.
Hi tedejc,

Run SmitFraudFix (by S!Ri)
  • Download SmitFraudFix (by S!Ri)
  • Extract the contents (a folder named SmitFraudFix) to your desktop
  • Open the SmitFraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select Option #1 - Search by typing 1, then press Enter
  • A text file will appear which will list infected files (if present)
  • Copy/paste the contents of that report into your next reply
Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

In your next reply, please copy/paste:
  • SmitfraudFix report (C:\rapport.txt)

Hi tedejc,

NOTE: You may want to print these instructions out for reference as you will be performing this portion of the fix in Safe Mode and will be unable to access the forums.

  • Reboot in Safe Mode
    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as the BIOS loads, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Do this until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
NOTE: If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. If this happens, restart the computer and try again.
    • Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, select Safe mode and then press Enter.
    ————
  • Open the SmitfraudFix folder double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2, then press Enter to delete infected files.
  • You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; type Y (for Yes) and press Enter to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  • The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

NOTE: The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply. The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

In your next reply, please copy/paste:
  • SmitfraudFix report (C:\rapport.txt)
  • a new HijackThis log
  • Also, let me know how your system is running
It's not running well at all.

Smartfraudfix never gave me the option to Replace infected files. I was able to get on line this morning to get your last instructions however my USB ports were not working until I started in safe mode. Now my USB ports work but I can not connect at home since.

Hi tedejc,

Let's try a couple of things to try to get your connection back:
  • Go to Start > Run and type: cmd
Press Ok. A Dos window will appear. At the command prompt type or copy/paste: ipconfig /release (note the space between the words; it needs to be there)
Hit Enter. Then, at the prompt, type or copy/paste: ipconfig /renew
    Hit Enter on your keyboard.

Close the command window and see if your connection has been restored.

  • If that didn't work:

Go to Start > Run and type: cmd
At the command prompt, type or copy/paste: netsh winsock reset
Hit Enter on your keyboard. You should receive a message that the Winsock Catalog was reset and to reboot.
Close the command window and reboot your computer.

  • Last, if all of the above fails:

Please use a flash drive to download this file and transfer it to your infected machine.
Be sure to place the program on your desktop.

Please download WinsockFix to your desktop.

  • Once downloaded, double-click WinsockxpFix.exe to start the program
  • Click on Fix. The program will proceed to remove and restore registry keys that may be corrupt, along with resetting the Hosts file.
  • Then it will ask you to reboot your computer. Click Ok to reboot.
  • Once rebooted, please let me know if you are able to connect to the internet.

When I left today for work I could not get on line however the USB port did work, finally. I was able to copy and send to you every thing from work. Tonight my wife called saying she still could not get on line. I finally came home and was able to get on line with no hassle and the USB ports were working to boot. This does not make any sense to me, but I haven’t tried the things you mentioned to get on. I am printing them out just incase.

My spyware guard was telling me that something (?) is trying to change my browser, when I did go on line. Other then that it seems fine.

So do you think the smitfraudfix did the trick? Her is another HJT log:

PS. Do you think I should put the 04 – HKCU Run AvirTr or the 02 – BHO AvirTrWarningBHO, back on?

No, I’m still getting the fake virus protection attacking. I had to shut down shortly after I sent you that last thread. And I got the warning again, of my IE search page has been changed: form us.rd.yahoo…., to www.microsoft.com… And now I cant get back on line. Errrr. Trying the Run CMD’s but I cant seem to get past the command promp with the re type ipconfig /renew, nor do I get anything after I typed the netsh winsock reset ether. Rebooted my computer and now I’m back on.
Hi tedejc,

So do you think the smitfraudfix did the trick?

Yes, SmitfraudFix worked for part of the infection. There's still more we need to do.

PS. Do you think I should put the 04 – HKCU Run AvirTr or the 02 – BHO AvirTrWarningBHO, back on?

No, this is part of the infection. No need to restore any lines that you've removed with HijackThis.

Disable Realtime Monitoring
Disable the following realtime monitors as they may stand in the way of the cleanup process:

SpywareGuard

  • Right-click the running icon of Spywareguard in your system tray; this will open the program.
  • Then go to Menu > file > exit
  • Before continuing on, confirm that the program is closed.
Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools
  • Click on General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real-time protection options
  • Uncheck Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)
  • Click Save

HijackThis
I need you to run a scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
This time, it is essential that you update the database prior to running the scan. Follow my instructions below:

MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Scan
  • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Select the Update tab.
  • Click Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform quick scan" then click Scan. This may take some time, be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click Ok, then Show Results to view the findings.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When this process completes, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to reboot. If a reboot is required, please save any open documents or work and then reboot.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in the program.

Last, download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from >> HERE << and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run the program.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (will be maximized) and info.txt (will be minimized)

In your next reply, please copy/paste:
  • Malwarebytes' scan report
  • RSIT logs (log.txt and info.txt)
  • Also, update me on any issues you're experiencing
PS. No need for a new HijackThis as RSIT produces one.
it running, slow but running. I haven’t been able to get on this computer since Thursday. I haven’t seen the fake virus protections popping up. It looks like my avast warning popped up and I treated it as a fake warning. it's kind of a freaky warring especially when your sound is turned up. any way I think that’s how the problem was able to get on unchecked.

hers is everything.

Hi tedejc,
The Malwarebytes' log that you gave me is old:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.24
Database version: 1026
Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3

9:26:51 PM 8/5/2008
mbam-log-8-5-2008 (21-26-51).txt

Let's see if we can get the newest log:
Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Click on the Logs tab.
  • You should see a list of logs for all of the dates/times that you ran a scan. Find the most recent log (date of 12/6 or 12/7)
  • Double-click on the entry to bring up the log. Copy/paste the log into your next reply.
  • Note: If you do not have a log dated after 12/2 then you need to update the program (click Update tab) and rerun the scan as requested in my prior post.

regards, revel
oops, OK I got it. Dated 12/8. Is this good? Hi tedejc,
Looks a lot better.
Be sure to reboot your machine to remove those infected files that Malwarebytes found.

Run a few updates here:
  • Update Java
Your version of Java is outdated and now a security risk. To update:
    • Go to the Java SE Download page >> HERE <<
    • Click on Free Java Download
    • Click on the Free Java Download button again and save the installation file to your desktop.
    • Close any programs that you may have running, including your web browser(s)
    • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
    • Uninstall All previous versions of Java (include any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in its name)

      Remove: Java™ 6 Update 7

    • Repeat as necessary to remove each Java version that is listed
    • When all components are removed, reboot your computer
    • To install the new version, double-click on the installation file that you saved to your desktop
  • Update Acrobat Reader -
Older versions of Acrobat Readers contain security vulnerabilities. To update Acrobat Reader to the current version, please visit: Adobe Reader download
Next:
Kaspersky Online scanner
  • Temporarily disable your resident antivirus to prevent it from interfering with this scan.

:: IMPORTANT :: With your resident antivirus disabled, I advise you not to use the internet for any purpose aside from the scan below.

Note: It is recommended to use Internet Explorer for this scan

  • Visit this link >> Kaspersky <<
  • Read the requirements and privacy statement and click Accept
  • The scanner and virus definitions will start downloading. When prompted to install an ActiveX by Kaspersky, click Run
  • When the downloads have completed, click on Settings
  • Be sure that the following boxes are checked. If not, please check them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan
  • When the scan is complete, it will display the scan results. Click on View Scan Report button. You will see a list of infected items. Click on Save Report As…. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) and then Save the scan report to your desktop. Post the contents of the scan report with your next reply.
  • :: IMPORTANT :: Re-enable your resident antivirus

In your next reply, please provide:
  • Kaspersky scan report
  • new RSIT log
  • Also, let me know how things are running
