[Resolved] Antivurus Trigger Alert?
13 min read
My name is revel and I will be reviewing your HijackThis log.
As I am still in training, all of my instructions must be checked by one of our malware experts before they are given to you. Thus, there may be some delay in responding. I know that you would like your computer working as quickly as possible and I will work hard to see that happen.
Before we begin, please review these important notes:
- The fixes are specific to your machine and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
- Please continue to review my answers until I tell you that your machine is clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
- If you don't understand the instructions, please stop and ask for clarification before proceeding.
- Continue to reply to this topic; do not start another.
Also, please copy/paste your logs into your replies rather than attaching them. Thanks!
I will be back as soon as possible with instructions.
Based on your description of things, I'd like you to run a few scans for me:
- Temporarily disable Spybot's Teatimer
While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can also interfere with some of the tools that we may use.
Follow these steps to disable TeaTimer:
- Right-click on Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol); choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
- Run/Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
- On the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list
- Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active" box
- If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted
- Exit Spybot S&D and reboot your computer to apply these changes.
———————— - Run ATF-Cleaner
- Please download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop from >> HERE <<
- Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
- Under Main choose: Select All
- Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
- Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
- Click the Empty Selected button.
- NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
- Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
- Click the Empty Selected button.
- NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
- Click Exit. on the Main menu to close the program.
- MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Scan
- Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from >> Malwarebytes.org - or - BestTechie <<
- When the file is downloaded, double-click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
- Make sure you checkmark Update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish
- If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
- Once the program has loaded, select "Perform quick scan" then click Scan.
- When the scan is complete, click Ok, then Show Results to view the findings.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When this process completes, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to reboot. If a reboot is required, please save any open documents or work and then reboot.
- The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in the program.
- Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from >> HERE << and save it to your desktop.
- Double click on RSIT.exe to run the program.
- Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
- Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (will be maximized) and info.txt (will be minimized)
In your next reply, please provide:
- Malwarebytes' log
- both RSIT logs; log.txt and info.txt
Please do not attach your logs to the thread unless I tell you otherwise. It is easier for me to research the logs when they are posted within the thread. Also, it reduces the clutter on my desktop. Thanks!
Remove Programs
Note: These are both optional uninstalls.
- Limewire - I see you have Limewire installed. Peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware and virus infections. Malware can be inadvertently downloaded in any file even if the file appears to be legit and you are exposing yourself to these risks by using one of these clients. For that reason I recommend that you remove Limewire but if you insist on using P2P programs then be sure to configure them properly and keep your antivirus and protection software updated. To uninstall it, use Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel.
- Paltalk Messenger - This program is considered low-risk adware because it is supported by advertising. You can read more about this HERE. If you decide to remove it, use Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel.
Updates
- Update Acrobat Reader -
Older versions of Acrobat Readers contain security vulnerabilities. To update Acrobat Reader to the current version, please visit: Adobe Reader download
- Update Java
- Go to the Java SE Download page >> HERE <<
- Click on Free Java Download
- Click on the Free Java Download button again and save the installation file to your desktop.
- Close any programs that you may have running, including your web browser(s)
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
- Uninstall All previous versions of Java (include any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in its name)
Uninstall these:
Java™ 6 Update 5
Java™ 6 Update 7 - Repeat as necessary to remove each Java version that is listed
- When all components are removed, reboot your computer
- To install the new version, double-click on the installation file that you saved to your desktop
Run SmitFraudFix (by S!Ri)
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please be sure to disable Spybot Teatimer (if it's not already disabled)
- Download SmitFraudFix (by S!Ri)
- Extract the contents (a folder named SmitFraudFix) to your desktop
- Open the SmitFraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
- Select Option #1 - Search by typing 1, then press Enter
- A text file will appear which will list infected files (if present). You can also find this report at C:\rapport.txt.
- Copy/paste the contents of that report into your next reply.
In your next reply, please copy/paste the following:
- report from SmitFraudFix
- new RSIT log

Heres the results from Kaspersky and RSIT findings. I do have 1 question as well With the system being rolled back to Nov 23 from the 24 which is when I started recieving the A/V trigger alert
is there anything I should do or delete from the system restor points?
The Icons from A/V trigger alert are gone from the desktop now and I'm not currently seeing anything from it.
After doing a search in the files and folders for the A/V trigger alert there seems to be nothing found.

If so, let's go ahead and proceed.
Based on your last log, the HijackThis fix did not work. Let's try that again.
It's very important that you disable Teatimer. If Teatimer is enabled, it can prevent these changes from being made.
Here are the instructions to disable Teatimer:
HijackThis
- Open HijackThis and "Do a system scan only."
- Place a check to the left of the following entries:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = - IMPORTANT: Close all browsers and open windows, including this one and click Fix checked.
—————- - Before closing HijackThis, please make a new HijackThis log.
Click the Scan button. When the scan is complete, click Save Log and save the log to your desktop.
In your next reply, please provide
- new HijackThis log
I was able to get past the bootup problem by using the F1 option.
The 2 REG strings you have mentioned they Keep showing up even after clicking the FIX CHECKED option. I'm going to add a couple A/V log files as well they may help you out a bit I'm not sure.

The good news is that your logs are clean.
- Delete the following tools and folders from your desktop:
RSIT
SmitfraudFix.zip
SmitFraudFix << FOLDER - Using Windows Explorer, navigate to this location:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security\Quarantine
Delete the contents of the Quarantine folder. Do not delete the Quarantine folder itself, just the contents.
————————
- Empty your Recycle Bin
————————
- Set a New Restore Point (this will prevent possible reinfection from an old one)
The easiest and safest way to do this is:
- Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore"
- Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the restore point a name then click "Create." The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. You may want to keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
- Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
- Click "OK".
- Click the "More Options" Tab.
- Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section. At the prompt to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one, click Yes.
- Re-enable Spybot Teatimer
Here are some recommendations for you:
- : Windows Updates :
I notice that you haven't updated to SP3. Unless you have a specific reason for not installing it, I recommend that you update. Malware writers often exploit vulnerabilities in unpatched systems. If you do not have your system set to receive security & critical updates automatically, I encourage you to visit Microsoft Updates on a regular basis to check for any recommended updates for your OS and IE. To view your Windows Update policy, simply RIGHT-click on My Computer > Properties > Select the "Automatic Updates" tab.
- : Antivirus :
Be sure to keep your antivirus installed and updated. Without updates, your antivirus will not be able to protect your system from new threats.
- : Additional Anti-Spyware :
There are a number of free programs available that are designed to help you protect your system from malware. I have listed a few of these programs below and highly recommend that you install one or more of the programs. Note: Always check for updates before running scans. If the program has an option to auto-check for updates, enable it.
- SpywareBlaster - A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster may be found here
- Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - This program is a good tool to keep around for on-demand scanning as well as routine scanning. Be sure to check for updates before scanning your system.
- : Consider using a HOSTS file :
A Hosts file will prevent your computer from any known malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. You may download the MVPS Hosts File by clicking >> HERE <<. A tutorial is also available as well as tips and links to other resources.
- : Make your Internet Explorer more secure :
1. In Internet Explorer, click on the Tools menu > Options
2. Click on the Security tab
3. Click the Internet icon so that it becomes highlighted
4. Click on Default Level and click OK
5. Click on the Custom Level button
Change the "Download signed Active X controls" to Prompt
6. Press the Apply button and then the Ok to exit the Internet Properties page
Change the "Download unsigned ActiveX controls" to Disable
Change the "Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to Disable
Change the "Installation of desktop items" to Prompt
Change the "Launching programs and files in an IFRAME" to Prompt
Change the "Navigate sub-frames across different domains" to Prompt
When these settings have been made, click on Ok button.
Please read Tony Klein's article on "So how did I get infected in the first place?".
Another article you should read through is How to prevent Malware.
————————
Thanks for providing all of the information I have asked you for.
If you continue to have the boot errors that you described earlier, I advise that you post a message in one of our other forums. The error message that you received sounds more like a hardware issue but I would try the Windows forum first. Be sure to provide a link to this post so that they know your system has been checked for malware.
If you have any other questions or issues please let me know in your next reply. Otherwise, please reply back that you've read this so this thread can be closed.
Regards, revel
There are two suggestions I have:
- Open Trend Micro Internet Security. Locate the Quarantine Manager (On the left, click Virus & Spyware Controls, then click Quarantine) To view the quarantine items, click Examine Quarantined Files. When you have located the file(s) in the quarantine list, try to delete them.
If that fails to work, try this next….
- Try deleting the files in Safe Mode.
Use the F8 key to start Windows XP in Safe mode
- Restart the computer.
- As soon as the BIOS loads, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Do this until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
NOTE: If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. If this happens, restart the computer and try again.
- Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, select Safe mode and then press Enter.
- Using Windows Explorer, navigate to this location:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security\Quarantine
Delete the contents of the Quarantine folder. Do not delete the Quarantine folder itself, just the contents.
