Whenever I double click on C: on my Windows Explorer, it opens a Search Window. I'm not sure if its the ckvo.exe virus again, but two weeks ago, we had this virus and it seemed okay after running our anti-virus, Avast, but when I used the computer today, the window opening thing is back.

Anyway, here's my log. Hope you can help me! :)

Hi, and Welcome to WhatTheTech :)

My name is jpshortstuff. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
By the looks of your HijackThis log, ckvo.exe is back.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Post that log back here.
Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.

      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply, along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Also, please give a detailed description of how your computer is running and behaving at the moment, listing any remaining problems.

Thanks.
I can open C: and other drives in Windows Explorer without new windows opening. It's still a bit sluggish, but other than that, it's okay. But Kaspersky found another virus apparently.

Hi :)

Looks like some of the virus is back, let's be a bit harder on it this time.

Please download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :Files
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\kxvo.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wedasgads0.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ckvo.exe

    :Reg
    [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1614895754-1757981266-1801674531-1005\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "kxva"=-
    "kamsoft"=-

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

If your computer is still running slowly, have a look at this guide:
http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials/runningslowly.php

Please post a new HijackThis log along with the OTMoveIt log.

Thanks.

Hi! Everything seems to be working fine now. Does it make a difference if there are multiple users of the computer or the things we did should solve the problems for the whole system? I checked out the site that you recommended about computer slowdowns, looks like I need to defrag the disk. Thanks for the help! I'll get back to you if something comes up again! I have a question though, since the virus could've come from one of our flash drives or our external hard drives, would the regular anti-virus programs be enough to scan and clean them up? I don't really want to reformat them, since they contain a lot of important files.
Hi boundless

Log looks good

Another user (Macy) was affected, but we cleaned that up as well. Are any of the other user profiles experiencing any problems?

Scanning your external drives with your AntiVirus program should be ok, but recommend that you use MalwareBytes' AntiMalware to scan them since it picks up the infection that you had better than regular AntiViruses. You can do this by running a Full Scan and selecting which drives you want it to scan.

Clean up with OTMoveIt3
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
You can now delete any other tools I had you download and use, unless you wish to keep them.

Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK
Now that your system appears to be clean, theres just a few steps I'd like you to take to prevent any future infections.
  • System restore:
We will now clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
    • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
    • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
    • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
    • Select the More options tab
    • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.
Make sure you do this now, as your System Restore currently has infected files in it.

  • Keeping your Windows up-to-date is crucial to your computer's security. Please go to the Windows Update Site (using Internet Explorer) and download and install all critical updates on a regular basis.

  • You don't appear to be running any third party Firewall software.

Install a firewall! Without a firewall you are very susceptible to being hacked, and people could gain access to your computer. If you don't have a firewall I strongly recommend you download ONE of the following:
    1) Comodo
    2) Agnitum
    3) Sunbelt/Kerio

  • Make sure you update your Anti-Virus software regularly, new viruses are being developed all the time.

  • Some more programs that it would be useful to have [OPTIONAL but RECOMMENDED]:

Download Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5 from here
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

SpywareBlaster is another real-time scanner that prevents most spyware from even being installed.
    Freely available: Download SpywareBlaster

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
