Hi All: First off, I don't know very much about computers. I got this one from a storage unit auction and it is used. It's an Everex Explora GA32. It seems to have a lot of stuff on it and it came with a bunch of programs already in it. The problem is that when we get on the internet it is very slow and gets a bunch of pop ups saying it has an infection. It also gets a blue screen with a message that there was a problem and some program had to close. If you hit the keys the regular screen comes back up in that same place you were. A friend told me about starting it in safe. It works okay if it is in safe and the screen doesn't turn blue but we can't use the printer unless we copy whatever we want to print to the notepad and then restart the computer and let it come up regularly. The blue screen will come on after about 5 minutes like that. I've had it about 3 weeks and the popups started getting worse. My friend told me about the website download.com and he had me put on 2 programs for spyware. When I ran the first one, the Malware Bytes, it found 99 problems and it said it fixed them. I ran the Spybot one and it said it found 50 problems that it fixed and then it wanted me to reboot the computer and run a full scan after it came back up. I did and when it came back up normally it is still really slow and I get the same pop ups. The friend that helped me told me I will probably need to restore the hard drive and run the Windows programs again. I told him I don't have any discs to put the Windows back on the computer plus I don't know how to do that anyway. He said for me to go to Google and put in the names of the trojan viruses I found and see if anyone knows about them. Your site had a bunch of people with these same ones on theirs so I thought maybe you could help me too. If you could I would really appreciate it. I don't know what you need from me as far as information or whatnot. If it can't be fixed here then can you tell me if it's worth taking it to a repairman or not. Thanks so much. Mimi
Hi MsMimi,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Download HijackThis from Here .
  • If using Internet Explorer, Please select RUN
  • If Using Firefox, Download to your Desktop and then Double-Click on Icon to start installation.
  • Choose the default location of C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Click the Install button.
  • Accept the license agreement .
  • The progam will place a shortcut on your desktop. This will make it easier for you to access the tool when required.
  • Click Do a system scan and save a log file. A Notepad file will open.
  • To post the text, first you must highlight the entire text and then press the (Ctrl+C) keys which copies it to your clipboard.
  • Now paste the log into this thread using the (Ctrl + V) buttons.

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER
Thanks Tomk. Here is the notepad of the program. I copied everything down just in case.

MsMimi,

This program works best when ran from normal mode. Let's run it in safe mode and see if we can get you back to normal mode.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Here is the file. I couldn't get the Combo program on the link 1 or link 3. Link 2 was in Spanish. So I went to anyther person's problem and loaded the program that way. It said there was an undate avaiable but it wouldn't update. It kept failing. I tried 3 times then told it to use the program that loaded up already. Let me know what I need to do next. Thanks again, Mimi

MsMimi,

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the pull down menu next to Platform select Windows
  • Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement"
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Now to Clean out the Java cache:

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. [external image: Posted Image]
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings… button
  • click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave all 3 Checked
    • Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Settings
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Disable your protection programs as we did before.

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
    • O16 - DPF: {1B4F9DD7-2D7C-44B5-9126-73206DA0AE75} -
      O16 - DPF: {233C1507-6A77-46A4-9443-F871F945D258} (Shockwave ActiveX Control) -
      O16 - DPF: {8AD9C840-044E-11D1-B3E9-00805F499D93} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_05) -
      O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0010-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.5.0_10) -
      O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0001-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_01) -
      O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_03) -
      O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0005-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_05) -
      O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_05) -
  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Next

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\4C356A38C0.dll

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\D]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{3fa05b8c-5b3a-11dd-8fac-100050300459}]
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

In your next reply please provide:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • New HijackThis log taken after everything else completed
  • Please tell me how it is running now
Here is the notepad for the Combofix program. The Hijacker one is below. I will send these now and check the computer out for a while to see what it does. I'll let you know. Thanks again, Mimi

MsMimi,

If things are looking good to you, I'd like to run an online scan. It takes a couple hours to run.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Sorry for the delay. Now when I just let the computer come on normally the pop ups seem to be gone and the computer doesn't have the errors and blue screen any more. I ran the spybot program and it didn't find anything. Then I ran the MalwareBytes program and it found 1 trojan. After that I did the online scan. I have the scan report for the Kaspersky online scan below. I also have the Malware program one pasted in here too. Thanks, Mimi ——————————————————————————– KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7 REPORT Friday, November 21, 2008 Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600) Kaspersky Online Scanner 7 version: 7.0.25.0 Program database last update: Friday, November 21, 2008 06:50:32 Records in database: 1399140 ——————————————————————————– Scan settings: Scan using the following database: extended Scan archives: yes Scan mail databases: yes Scan area - My Computer: C:\ E:\ F:\ G:\ H:\ I:\ J:\ Scan statistics: Files scanned: 79471 Threat name: 1 Infected objects: 11 Suspicious objects: 0 Duration of the scan: 02:59:26 File name / Threat name / Threats count C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\backups\backup-20080627-125956-578.dll Infected: Trojan.Win32.Monderc.gen 1 C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\backups\backup-20080709-121418-586.dll Infected: Trojan.Win32.Monderc.gen 1 C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\backups\backup-20080709-121450-574.dll Infected: Trojan.Win32.Monderc.gen 1 C:\WINDOWS\system32\acggxnrb.dll Infected: Trojan.Win32.Monderc.gen 1 C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmgococs.dll Infected: Trojan.Win32.Monderc.gen 1 C:\WINDOWS\system32\cohxvoka.dll Infected: Trojan.Win32.Monderc.gen 1 C:\WINDOWS\system32\hyigom.dll Infected: Trojan.Win32.Monderc.gen 1 C:\WINDOWS\system32\msormeli.dll Infected: Trojan.Win32.Monderc.gen 1 C:\WINDOWS\system32\pcqrdv.dll Infected: Trojan.Win32.Monderc.gen 1 C:\WINDOWS\system32\qpdjbz.dll Infected: Trojan.Win32.Monderc.gen 1 C:\WINDOWS\system32\stbnorfi.dll Infected: Trojan.Win32.Monderc.gen 1 The selected area was scanned. MsMimi,

The Trojan Mbam found is just a left-over in your system restore folder. We will be cleaning that out shortly.

The files found by Kaspersky are more important. I'm a little surprised that they are there. Oh well. We will take them out. :D

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\acggxnrb.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmgococs.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cohxvoka.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\hyigom.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\msormeli.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\pcqrdv.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\qpdjbz.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\stbnorfi.dll

Also, please provide a new HijackThis log.
Here are the ComboFix and HijackThis logs. Please let me know what else you need me to do. Thanks, Mimi

MsMimi,

Log looks good :D

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls

Keep Microsoft Windows Updated - This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. The easiest way to do this is to turn on Automatic Updates. Do this by:
  • From your desktop, right-click on My Computer,
  • click on Properties
  • Select the Automatic Updates tab
  • Click on Automatic
  • Click on Apply button
  • Click on OK to exit.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol - This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software.
Winpatrol

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
TomK: Thanks for all your help. I did everything on the list above. Everything seems to be running okay. The speed is very fast. I don't get any pop ups or the blue screen anymore. The only thing different is that the bar that goes across the bottom with the start button and the clock is up the right side of the screen. It happened the first time I ran the ComboFix program. All the stuff is still there and everything works okay when you click on it but when the internet opens up it covers it up. It's not a problem to use there but I'm just wondering if there is something else wrong with the computer. I looked at the DISPLAY icon in the control panel but I really don't know what half of the stuff in there is for so I didn't do any changes to it. If it has to stay that way it's okay. Like I said it all works fine now. I really do appreciate your help. You are a blessing. Thanks again, Mimi
MsMimi,

The position of the task bar should not be related to malware. To put it back on the bottom of your screen:
  • Put your cursor on the task bar
  • Hold your left mouse button
  • Drag the bar back to the bottom of your screen
  • Right click on the task bar (a little window will pop up)
  • Click on Lock the taskbar

Let me know how it goes.
I did that and it worked great! Thanks again. You really have helped a lot. I was afraid I was going to have to take this computer to a shop to have it fixed. With Christmas right around the corner I really don't have the money so I would have had to wait until next year. This one is so much better than my old computer. Thank you so much! Mimi
