Hello,

I recently started seeing pop-ups and other ads that used to never come up on my computer (most likely from something my little sister downloaded or something). Anyway, I tried using various programs to get rid of the trojans and what not that was apparently on my computer. Norton even told me a few viruses had come up (i.e. fakeavalert). A friend of mine then told me to use Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, which I was hestitant at first to do. I finally ran the program and now that I have removed what they told me to remove, and restarted my computer, I have NO internet connection. I can't get on using firefox, ie, etc. I can't even log into AIM. Can someone please help me!

Here is my HiJackThis log:

Hi and welcome to the forums here at WTT.

Sorry to hear of the troubles you had after running MBAM. It is a good program that we advise regularly, so I'm not sure what went wrong.

Can you post the log that you got from MBAM. That would help. Let's also run Winsockfix and see if we can get your network back up again.

WinsockFix to restore internet connectivity.

http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

The Winsockfix Utility will:
· Detect your current Operating System
· Release the IP address, taking you "Offline"
· Reset the TCP stack using Netsh.exe (Windows XP only)
· Delete the current Registry TCP and Winsock Values
· Import new "Working" Registry Values
· Backup any Current "Hosts" file
· Replace the "Hosts" file with a default one
· Reboot the Computer

Instructions:
http://www.home-network-help.com/winsockfix.html
Thank you for your response! The winsockfix has fixed my internet problem, but now I am back to square one with the pop-ups, etc.

This is the log from the first time I ran MBAM:

Hi, Looks like the new Zlob/DSNChanger that may have infected your router also. Do you have a router? Please let me know and we'll go from there.
OK I'm pretty sure your router settings have been changed. This is a fairly new thing we're seeing here but we do have a fix that has been successful so far. Please read through all of the instructions before doing anything. I know MBAM took out your network one of the times it was run but it is part of the fix here. Hopefully we won't have the same results, but this infection is directly related to the DNS settings so it's a little tricky. Here you go…

It sounds like a case of Zlob/DNSchanger that change the router's DNS settings. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Next disconnect your system from the internet, and your router, then…

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.
===============================================

Next you must reset the router to its default configuration. This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router. Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds). If you don’t know the router's default password, you can look it up HERE

However, if there are other Zlob-infected machines using the same router, they will need to be cleared with the above steps before resetting the router. Otherwise, the malware will simply go back and change the router's DNS settings. You also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset. Check out this site here for video tutorials on how to properly configure your router's encryption and security settings. You may also need to consult with your Internet service provider to find out which DNS servers your network should be using.

Once you have ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware on the infected system, and reset the router to its default configuration you can reconnect to the internet, and router. Then return to this site to post your logs.

===============================================

Please post the Malwarebytes log and let me know how things are running now.
I followed the instructions that you supplied for me. This is the log I got now for MBAM: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.30 Database version: 1306 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 11/15/2008 7:58:34 PM mbam-log-2008-11-15 (19-58-34).txt Scan type: Quick Scan Objects scanned: 61676 Time elapsed: 8 minute(s), 41 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 2 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 2 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DhcpNameServer (Trojan.DNSChanger) -> Data: [removed] [removed] -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. C:\WINDOWS\system32\_005308_.tmp.dll (Trojan.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. I also have another problem… I thought it had to do with all of these other problems, but I'm not sure anymore…. I get a message saying "Windows cannot find 'resycled\boot.com'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search." This happens when I double click on my d:/ drive in My Computer, which is my backup drive. What do I do for this?
OK so you have reset the router correct? How is it running at this point? Have the redirects stopped yet? Please also run HijackThis again and post the log.
Yes, I have reset the router and reconfigured the settings. The pop-ups still occur when I go to certain websites.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

The problem with the D:/ drive is definitely fixed, as that message does not come up anymore! The pop-ups have seemed to stop also! Thank you!

One more question, unless you find more problems based on this next hijackthis log… For one of my classes I am enrolled in at Pace University, I need to set up and install an apache server; the instructions from my professor was to just install it with the default settings, which would normally detect "Network Domain", "Server Name", and "Administrator's Email Address." When I install it, however, the text boxes for that information is blank and I have no idea what to put into those boxes. Is the fact that these are not detected automatically by the program when being installed a problem with my system of no? Please let me know anything that may help me in this situation, as I am not sure if it is connected to my current issues of malware, etc.

The file I have used for the apache server is located at: http://archive.apache.org/dist/httpd/binaries/win32/ and
apache_2.2.10-win32-x86-openssl-0.9.8i.msi

The problem with the D:/ drive is definitely fixed, as that message does not come up anymore! The pop-ups have seemed to stop also! Thank you!

Great, glad to hear that.

Whoa nellie. :wacko: I'm not going to be any help there as that's not anything I have experience with. I'm pretty much strictly a desktop guy. What I can do is make sure to the best of my ability that your PC is clean. Then after that you're on your own. So let's do that first, then you can move ahead with your assignment.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Run HijackThis. (Vista users, please right click on HijackThis.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {DE9C389F-3316-41A7-809B-AA305ED9D922} - (no file)
Then close all windows except HijackThis and press Fix checked.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Let's run MalwareBytes again. Please do that and post the log if anything is found.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let's also do an online virus scan.
Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Post a new HijackThis log and let me know how it's running.
There were no threats when I ran MBAM again.
