Hello on Monday I started receiving pop-ups saying my computer had been hijacked and my passwords would be stolen. It looked like an official Windows window but I knew it wasn't right. I clicked x to close it and then it came up and said I should install Antivirus 2009, again I closed it.
After that I used ctrl alt delete to close it instead of clicking the x but it made no difference?

It kept popping up and when I searched on google or yahoo for the virus name it wasn't really google. It was going to the wrong sites when I clicked on a link stating cnet it would go somewhere else, I could see it re-routing.

I ran Mcafee and it found 35 viruses. I knew it didn't get it all and downloaded and ran Spybot, it found some stuff and couldn't remove some stuff. I called and friend who had me download and run ccleaner. I then downloaded Smithfraud and ran that as well. He looked at my hijack log and told me to look for certain virus names like prun and such and find out how to remove each. The main problem is that it will not let me go to any site that helps remove or learns about virus removal. I don't know why hijack this and cnet got through but they did. I uploaded a Sdat file recommended by microsoft to my other computer, put it on the network, installed it from dos and ran a dos scan last night. It said it cleared all but 3. Things were running faster this morning but I am back to the same pop-up messages, computer running horrible AND my time was reset to military time.

I can't follow the instructions you posted about the ERUNT program and such because when I try to go to any of those sites on that computer it acts like I don't have an internet connection. I can go to any other site just not ones related to virus removal. It won't let me install files that require the internet connection to do so because it blocks them.

:pullhair: I have been in tears over this, it's such a mess. I am at my wits end and don't know what else to do.

Here is my hijack log, I am sorry I haven't been able to run any of the other programs you asked that we do but I just can't?

I truly appreciate ANY help you can offer :) :notworthy:

Hi reyadawnbringer,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

First off. NO CRYING! It makes it hard for you to read my glorious instructions. ^_^

You say you ran Smithfraud. Could that have been SmitfraudFix? If so, what option(s) did you run?

Can you do this for me:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.
Thank you so much for being willing to help. Yes it was Smitfraud fix, I chose to scan and clean I think it was and to fix registry errors. Unfortunately I cannot download that program to the computer that is infected unless there is a way to download it to the computer I am on now and burn to cd or upload to the shared folder on the network and install from there? Is that possible? The infected computer would not let me access this site or the one to download that program.
reyadawnbringer,

Unfortunately I cannot download that program to the computer that is infected unless there is a way to download it to the computer I am on now and burn to cd or upload to the shared folder on the network and install from there? Is that possible?

Yes. However you can get it to work.

Do you still have SmitfraudFix on the computer?

reyadawnbringer,

Ok I will give it a try, the last time I tried it wouldn't install the file because it needed to connect on-line to install and the computer blocked it. I will certainly try though.

Yes I do still have the SmitfraudFix installed.
reyadawnbringer,

Run SmitfraudFix

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

reyadawnbringer,

Those rootkits can be pretty nasty. Let's bring in a big gun.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Wow ok off to run that now, should I be reporting anything back afterwards? I have a few other quick questions if you don't mind. The computer downstairs is Vista and seems to be a better version of Mcafee, I am not having any problems with it but since the two computers are networked should I be concerned about this one? Thanks so much :)
I clicked yes to install the recovery console thing but it is just sitting there with a bunch of …….DONE at the end and a blinking cursor, I never got the pop up that said continue to run malware? At the top of the blue window it still says preparing to run please wait?
reyadawnbringer,

should I be reporting anything back afterwards?

yes.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

should I be concerned about this one?

Maybe. I'd suggest that you run Mbam on it. If you see (Rootkit.Agent) or (Trojan.DNSChanger), then I'm going to want you to post a log here (after we get this one clean). If you only see something like (Adware.xxxxx) don't worry about it. Just remove and get on with your life.

Ok great thanks so much for that tip :) Definitely focusing on this one first. I do have good news to report. I can get on this site and every other virus help site from the infected computer now :) YAY!!!!! I just tried it before running that last program. You are awesome!

reyadawnbringer,

Give it 20 minutes. If nothing happens. Reboot your computer and try again.

Ok going to go check on it again now :)
