Each time I turn on my computer and windows comes up my common folder opens up. The files helper.dll and helper.sig are inside the folder that opens automatically. I recently downloaded AVG Anti-virus and it picked up a few trojan horse viruses and moved them into the AVG vault. The viruses found in the vault are Trojan Horse downloader.agent.AHVP, Trojan Horse Generic12.JIF, Adware Toolbar.CJ, and Dropper.Small. The vault is showing helper.dll as the virus path. I need help fixing the problem and getting my computer back up to speedand actually be able to search the Web. I have been dealing with these for about a month and about to go insane!!!
Hi, and Welcome to WhatTheTech :)

My name is jpshortstuff. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Hi.

LimeWire
You have LimeWire, a P2P/file sharing programs installed on your computer. P2P applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. You'll be doing yourself a favor by removing it.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun…protection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm
See Clean/Infected P2P Programs here

I would recommend that you uninstall LimeWire, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

Viewpoint Manager is often installed without the users permission. If you didn't install it, or if you did but you no longer use it, I recommend you get rid of it. You should also remove old versions of Java, as they are exploitable. We will install the latest version of Java shortly.

Please click Start >> Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.
Find the item below on the list and click Remove.
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player
Viewpoint Toolbar
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2

(as well as Limewire if you choose to)
Let me know how it goes.

You appear to be running both McAfee and AVG. If you are using McAfee's AntiVirus, then I highly recommend you remove AVG as running two AntiVirus programs can cause conflicts as well as slowing down your system.

The computer is slow to start up windows and the C:/Program Files/Common folder still pops up with the helper.sig file inside it once windows loads. When windows is started, I see that it is much faster opening programs and such. I followed each of your steps in order and came to a problem at Kaspersky website. The program download successfully, but the update had a problem and failed to update. I am unable to click the settings button to scan. I copy and pasted the report below. (I am waiting to get the go ahead from you to do any further actions. I still have to scan and get back to you a report under Kaspersky.) Update has failed. Program has failed to start. Close the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 window and open it again to install the program. You must be online to update the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7 database. With the latest database updates, you can find new viruses and other threats. Please go online to use Kaspersky Online Scanner 7. Use the program to check your computer for viruses and other malware for free. Benefits: Kaspersky Lab exceptional detection rates and thorough scan Hourly database updates available Heuristic analysis to detect unknown malware One-click installation Requirements and limitations: In Microsoft Windows Vista, you must open the Web browser using the Run as Administrator command. To begin using the program, you need to download and install the program files and the database of malware definitions. (The size of the program files depends on your operating system.) Later, Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 checks for the program and database updates every time you open or update the program window and, if available, downloads and installs them automatically. In Linux, Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 does not scan RAM, boot sectors and MBRs, so it cannot detect malicious programs located in these areas. In Microsoft Windows Vista, if the language you use has a character set and fonts different from English, make sure that the language selected for your default system locale and the language to display dates, times, currency, and measurements (Current format) are the same as the language you use. Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 only detects malicious code that have already penetrated into your computer, so that you can delete them manually. It neither protects your computer against malicious code, nor prevents future infections. We recommend that you install a full-featured antivirus solution to protect your computer. Thanks.
I completed the Panda Scan and came up with 20 files infected. When the scan completed, the page refreshed and it wanted me to buy Panda to see the report. (unless I did something wrong) Below is the Hijack this log…I did this after completing the Panda Scan. Also, I deleted Mcafee anti-virus and am now using AVG. The mcafee was causing me a few problems once I ran out of the one year subscription.

Hi.

Can you remember what kind of infected files it found? Were they just cookies, or other infections?

How did you delete McAfee? There seems to be a lot of traces of McAfee left, and they are also running processes, meaning they are slowing don your computer if they aren't needed. I would click Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and find any McAfee components on that list, and click Remove by each one.

You don't appear to be running any third party Firewall software.

Install a firewall! Without a firewall you are very susceptible to being hacked, and people could gain access to your computer. If you don't have a firewall I strongly recommend you download ONE of the following:
1) Comodo
2) Agnitum
3) Sunbelt/Kerio

How's your computer running now?

Thanks.
I do not recall the infected files. I believe it only said 20 files infected and did not state which ones they were. I did not delete Mcafee the whole way. I saw that I needed to delete the program in a serious of steps. (one before the other) I put the Comodo firewall on the computer and everything is running fine. I still do not understand why the common file folder pops up with the helper.sig file each time windows boots up?? Is t here anything I can do to stop the file from opening each time or do you know why this is happening?
Hi.

If there are still traces of McAfee left after uninstalling, there is a handy tool to remove all traces from your machine (from McAfee themselves).

Download the removal tool from:

http://download.mcafee.com/products/licens…atches/MCPR.exe

Click Save and save the file to your Desktop.
Make sure all McAfee windows are closed.
Double-click MCPR.exe to run the removal tool.
Restart your computer after receiving the message CleanUp Successful.

Let's try a few different scans to try and narrow down the source of your problem. Firstly, a startup list.

Create a Startup List
  • Open HijackThis
  • Click on "Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Check the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
  • Copy and past the StartupList from the notepad into your next post
I would quite like to get a report from one of these online scans, since that may reveal something crucial. Let's try ESET.

Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

Let's have a deeper look at your system just in case there is something more sinister. I will also ask my colleagues if they have ever encountered a similar problem to yours, see if we can dig up some ideas.

GMER
  • Download GMER by GMER from here
  • Unzip it to a folder on your desktop
  • Double click on gmer.exe to launch GMER
  • If asked, allow the gmer.sys driver load
  • If it warns you about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan, click OK
  • If you don't get a warning then
    • Click the rootkit tab
    • Click Scan
  • Once the scan has finished, click copy
  • Paste the log into notepad using Ctrl+V
  • Save it to your desktop as gmerrk.txt
  • Click on the >>> tab
  • This will open up the rest of the tabs for you
  • Click on the Autostart tab
  • Click on Scan
  • Once the scan has finished, click copy
  • Paste the log into notepad using Ctrl+V
  • Save it to your desktop as gmerautos.txt
  • Copy and paste the contents of gmerautos.txt and gmerrk.txt as a reply to this topic
Thanks.
The computer is running great! When I tried running the GMER, COMODO was not letting it happen. I had screen after screen pop up to asking for permission to run it. Also, AVG started an automatic scan earlier and came up with zero threats. The only problem I am having is the helper.sig on the start up of windows. Below are the things you asked for, except the GMER.

Hi, let's try this.

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller .
  • Right click the downloaded BFU folder, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download DeepDive Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon [external image: Posted Image] and select DeepDive.bfu
  • Press Execute and let the program do it’s job. (Do not be startled as your taskbar will disappear for a little while.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
  • A notepad file called BFUlogdeepdive.txt will be created on the systemdrive (usually the location will be C:\BFUlogdeepdive.txt). Post the content of that file please.
Reboot your computer and let me know if the problem is gone. Post a new HijackThis log as well please.

Thanks.
The common folder and the helper.sig file are not coming up anymore when I start up windows. I did see that they are both in the recycle bin. Did you in a round about way just delete the common folder and file? Also, do you see any problems with me running AOL or is it best to only have IE? Below are the deepdive and logfile:

Hi :)

Did you in a round about way just delete the common folder and file?

Sort of, although there were some checks in the registry as well.

Also, do you see any problems with me running AOL or is it best to only have IE?

I see no problems with that.

Please do this:
  • Copy the contents of the Code Box below to Notepad.
  • Name the file as fix.reg
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • and Save it on the desktop
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5ababccb-2b9c-4c45-a5f2-784e173481f6}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html]
Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4, and a blank line at the end.

Then right-click on the fix.reg file and click merge, say yes to any prompts.

Please check for this file, and delete it if it exists:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\iehlpr32.dll

Reboot after this and post a new HijackThis log. Any more problems?

Thanks.
