I can't access the internet through IE or Firefox. I can ping www.google.com etc and can ping my router fine. But when I use a browser I get nothing. So far I have:

1. Scanned and cleared all virus'
2. Turned off all firewalls
3. Done a Hijack This scan and cleared anything untoward
4. Reset the hosts file using the command "netsh winsock reset"
5. Tried another router

I'm tearing my hair out here. I am running XP Pro SP2. Also I can download updates for AVG Anti-Virus. Here is my last HijackThis log:

Is there a reason you're using a proxy server? R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 192.168.1.1
I'm not sure about this one.
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Tiscali 10.0
Tiscali 10.0 was Tiscali's integrated self-branded web browser, which was distributed with its dial-up Internet packages. It was produced by UltraBrowser Inc, and used Microsoft's Internet Explorer Trident rendering engine to display web pages. Since Tiscali's corporate re-branding exercise in 2004, the software has not been included in broadband installation packs as it features Tiscali's original logo and design layout, and generally was designed for those with dial-up packages. Its version number was matched to that of UltraBrowser's most recent version of their own browser.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

Type: exit (tap enter)

Now lets check some settings on your system.
Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections

Then right click on your Default Connection
Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
Left click on Properties
Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
Note: Do this for all Network Connections
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
The PC is still doing the same. It is running fine, I can connect and update my AVG anti virus fine, and ping any website as I said. I am just getting nothing on my browsers (IE and Firefox). Even when I type my router address in to get on to the config for it it is blocked.

I doubt that we'll find anything but lets not leave any stone unturned.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Still suffering the same problem. PC is running 100% I just cant view web pages, still can ping any website out there.

This one has me curious. Did you disable this port?
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]
"3389:TCP"= 3389:TCP:*:Disabled:@xpsp2res.dll,-22009

It could just be a Windows firewall issue.

Let me ask one of our registry experts.
Hi LDTate, thanks for your reply. I wouldn't have blocked that port on purpose, so I am not sure how that would have happened? I have windows firewall off for the purposes of testing and have no others installed. How do I unblock this port? I booted up in safe mode with networking and the internet works fine on it… finally we seem to be getting somewhere :)
One of our Teachers, Silver, replied to my request.
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]
"3389:TCP"= 3389:TCP:*:Disabled:@xpsp2res.dll,-22009
This shows there is an exception in the Windows firewall to allow incoming Remote Desktop connections, and that exception has been disabled (it's unticked in the UI). It does not relate to anything outbound like web browsing, and as it's currently disabled it's not even active, so nothing to worry about.

Another one of our Teachers, Rorschach112, suggested this:
I'd ask the user if he can connect to the web in safe mode, wouldn't surprise me if there was a conflict with some security program

So it appears something is loading in Normal Mode but not Safe Mode.

Open notepad and copy and paste next bold in it:

regedit /e startup.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg"
start notepad startup.txt

Save this as look.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.

Doubleclick on look.bat and post the contents of it in your next reply

I'm at real work but will check back in a little while.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\AOLDialer] "key"="SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run" "item"="AOLDial" "hkey"="HKLM" "command"="C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\AOL\\ACS\\AOLDial.exe" "inimapping"="0" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\PCMService] "key"="SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run" "item"="PCMService" "hkey"="HKLM" "command"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Dell\\Media Experience\\PCMService.exe\"" "inimapping"="0" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\RealTray] "key"="SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run" "item"="RealPlay" "hkey"="HKLM" "command"="C:\\Program Files\\Real\\RealPlayer\\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER" "inimapping"="0"
Look for this file and let me know if you can find it
autoply.exe

It may have been on an external device such as a thumb drive. If so, do this:

Download & run this file
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/s…Disinfector.exe

Be sure to insert any flash drives or USB devices that you use.

Next:
Copy/paste the text in the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the text in the box below, then click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text. Now release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'. Now over the empty Notepad box, right click your mouse again, and select 'paste' and you will have copied and pasted the text.

File::
C:\DOCUME~1\Jonny\LOCALS~1\Temp\RGI2.tmp

Registry::
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{6b8501b8-a530-11dd-a790-00038a000015}]

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:
1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save …

[external image: Posted Image]

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Then post the results log and a new HijackThis log.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Couldn't find autoply.exe but I ran the fix with my usb pen in anyway.

Followed all other instructions, and still suffering the same symptoms:

and here is my hijack log first, followed by combo:
