hi,

ok good. must be looking better on your end now. is your avg 7.5 up to date? you will have to upgrade to the new version soon or get another malware app to replace it. updates for it end in January i think.

you had quite a load. we will get another download to use. it only runs in safe mode, please post the log from it also in your reply. link and directions:

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
* Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
* Choose your usual account.

* Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
* Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
* It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
* Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
* When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
* Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
* Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt in your reply.
For some reason I wanted to look at my add/remove list to see how large a program MTmalwarebytes was and I noticed "Ron Tool Offerfortoday"… this may be the bugger we are looking for… I will report after I run SDFix.
Here is the log for SDFix:

Ron Tools was previously uninstalled by Norton Antivirus so I don't think that will be a problem… so far everything is working as it should! Let me know if there is anything else I should check. If not, your help has been enormously appreciated!

hi,

ok good. You can delete the sdfix folder in its default install location @ C:/ and the original archive you downloaded. you can also delete vundofix off your desktop. both of these are updated on a regular basis so using a outdated version wouldnt cover all the bases. keep malwarebytes and always check for updates before scanning with it. Updates for AVG 7.5 will be ending in jan 09 i think. you will have to upgrade to version 8.0. See the AVG website.

two things; java version and system restore:

java:

Vulnerabilities in versions of Sun Java may be responsible for some malware installs via your browser.

It is important to keep Sun Java up to date and also to remove older versions.

* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.
* 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.

to check if you have the latest version of Java and to download the latest version:

http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

system restore:
One of the features of XP/Vista is the System Restore option, however if malware infects a computer the malware may be backed up also because of this feature. Its a good idea to make a new clean restore point after malware is removed from the computer:

You must be logged in as an Administrator to do this. If you are not logged in as an Administrator, the System Restore tab will not be displayed.
Turning off System Restore will clear out all previous restore points.
To turn off Windows XP System Restore:

NOTE: These instructions assume that you are using the default Windows XP Start Menu and have not changed to the Classic Start menu. To re-enable the default menu, right-click Start, click Properties, click Start menu (not Classic) and then click OK.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot. (will delete possibly infected restore points)

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

4. Reboot (new clean restore point)

if all is good, some info for you:

My Top Ten List
The Short Version:

1)Keep your OS, (Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and other software up to date.
2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come bundled with unwanted add-ons.
3) Install and keep them all updated: one antivirus and two or three anti-malware applications.
4) Refrain from clicking on links or installing files you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message may seem.
5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or offers from websites requesting that you install software to your computer.
6) Don't click on offers to "scan" your computer.
7) Set up and use limited accounts for everyday use, rather than administrator accounts.
8) Install and understand the limitations of a third party software firewall.
9) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client.
10) If your habits include visiting or downloading/installing files from: warez, crack sites or p2p (file sharing) networks: then you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source?

happy safe surfing out there
A couple questions: As far as I know, I do not have Java installed on my Add/Remove programs… unless it is hidden or unless there was something you saw that led you to believe I have it on my computer… I have an older Dell from 2000 and it does not hold much, so I tend to not download much if I can avoid it. I am very amature when it comes to computers… should I 'right click' delete sdfix and vundofix from their locations or is there some special uninstall proceedure I need to follow? All your advise has be awesome… I will follow your steps above and set a new restore point…. should I have any questions I will get back to you…. Thank you soooo much for your help. :notworthy:
hi warbler,

i like questions. I didnt see it listed in your log but its really part of my "finish" speech. most likely you have it installed. two links you can check:

http://javatester.org/version.html
http://www.javatester.org/enabled.html

you should always use the add/remove programs panel to uninstall software. vundofix and sdfix will not be listed there as they are stand alone apps that run from there location and dont "install" themselves like most software. so yes you can simply right click and delete them from there locations.

iam glad you liked my advice, i really get very little feed back about it so i appreciate it. your welcome. more questions: fire away.
