[Resolved] HijackThis log, please review

I have had some serious issues with my notebook. I am configured as follows:
HP Pavillion DV9000
core 2 duo
2gb ram
windows vista home premium
nvidia go7600
2 hard drives, 100gb each

I had an issue Sunday, where it took me over 30 minutes to boot up. Everything i tried to do or open took 10 to 20 minutes(severe lag). I ran Malwarebytes, Spyware doctor, and a McAfee scan. They all picked up some things, which i deleted. It is running better, but still on the slow side. I am hoping that this log may suggest some issues that can be repaired. I tried to run Erunt, to backup the registry, as suggested here in these forums. I cannot create a file to save on. I keep getting a message "unable to create file". I do believe i am running as administrator.

Also, when i run HijackThis, i first recieve this message:

"For some reason your system denied write access to the hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click start, Run and type:

notepad C:\windowsystem32\driverect\hosts

and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them.
Save the file as 'hosts'.(with quotes), and reboot.

For Vista:simply, exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon,choose 'run as administrator'."

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Go Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features and uninstall both these programs

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<– Don't forget this
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

Thank you Ken. I went through quite a bit to get relevent knowledge removed. I hope i got all of it. I am now having an issue when i go to install programs. this is what pops up when i try to install something: 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers. Virtual Device Driver format in the registry is invalid. Chose 'close' to terminate the application. The only option i have is to close. I have been doing extensive research for a resolution to this problem. i come up with fixes that relate to windows xp and 2000. I cannot seem to apply these fixes to my windows vista, as i cannot find the specific files they instruct me to change. I have been doing a lot of things trying to clean everything up, not sure if I(or a program i used) may have caused this issue. Do any ideas or suggestions come to mind? Depending on how your manufacturer set up your system, you may or may not need the Windows XP CD. If you have a I386 folder on your C:\ drive you may not need the disk.
  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.


If not, lets try downloading and installing Malwarebytes in Safemode


To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
    this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode with Network Support
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

ken, i am running Vista Home Premium. Your last post leads me to believe you think i am running XP. Should i still follow your instructions? I have been trying to find a solution to this problem for the last 6 hours. Everywhere i find information, the solutions directly relate to windows XP or 2000. I cannot find Virtual device Driver anywhere!!! I thoroughly searched through the registry. I have attached a picture of what i am getting. Thank you

I found a way to run scannow, It did not find any problems. I have already installed Malwarebytes. Some programs i get this problem with, and other i dont. My wifes computer will install a certain program, but i cannot. We are both running Vista. I get this message that i uploaded a picture of. I just can't seem to find any information about how to resolve this issue anywhere on the web.

Jim, Run Malwarebytes and post the log. I may have to link you to some windows support sites for that issue if Malwarebytes finds nothing bad. Also after running Malwarebytes, post a new HJT log.

Malwarebytes found nothing :thumbup: But you should still be able to post a new HJT log, not to worry about the hosts file, one of your programs is denying access so thats fine, but let it run and post the log

I cant post the pics of hijackthis log, because pics are to big to upload. I cannot save log, i get a message when i click save log, saying "hijackthis log file does not exist. do you want to create a new one", I click yes and message goes away and I am left with a blank notebook page. Nothing seems to work to let me save the file, and i cannot upload the pics from the snipping tool, this site will not let me do to the size. I dont know if a program like registry mechanic deleted some registries that are causing me problems with various tasks like this, or what. I am getting ver frustrated to say the least, but i do appreciate your taking the time to help me thus far. I don't know how you can help me further if i can't even get you the information you are requesting. Ken, just read your latest post. I did figure a way to run scannow on vista, and posted a pic of it in a previous post. It found no problems.

I would be interested in seeing the RSIT report, it won't remove anything but will give an extensive report on whats going on on your system. Just copy and paste it from Notepad into this thread
