HI! After visiting what appears to be a safe news website, Symantec alerted me of the potential threat, the computer rebooted itself and I became a happy owner of small red round icon with white "x" that produce pop-up message "Windows has detected spyware infection", etc… It appears that it attempts to execute itself periodically, but Windows prevent it with warning "C:WINNT\system32\WINI10~1.EXE The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction CS:11be IP:019a OP:63 6f 6d 22 3e Chose 'Close' to terminate the application". Please help!

Hi xyz1010,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please let me know a couple of things:
1) Have you set any restrictions for internet explorer on this system?
2) Is this a personal or a business computer?
Thank you Tomk. The Anti-Malware is still running. Judging from the progress (~150,000 objects from ~ 1,000,000) it will not be done very soon. I will post the Logs file as soon as I get it. As of your questions: it is a corporate computer with standard package of firm-imposed restrictions.
xyz1010,

The scans you are doing will cause no harm. However, some of the other tools we use could change some of your "corporate" settings and there is some risk involved in their use. Therefore we need the "owner" of the computer to accept responsibility for using them.

You need to review this sites Terms of Use. I'm going to need you to contact your IT department for fixing this. Sorry.

Do you have any questions before I close this thread?
I assume full responsibility. Our IT is very, very small comparing to the task they are handling. They have already tryed to fix it, without good results. Please do not close thread so far! The only solution the IT guys have is to rebuild my laptop. Plus I have alredy notifyed them that I will take the problem to get resolved outsite of the firm. They are fine with this…
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
