I had this file appear on my desktop as well. ( It stoped task manager from working. ) I ran Maleware, and Quarantined the files. Should I delete them from the Quartine as well? Also after the reboot, the "delself" file was still on the desktop. Though the message saying that the computer is infected has stopped coming up, and the computer seems to be working fine. Should I just delete the "delself " file to the recycle bin? I would greatly appreciate any help.
Equssdico,

The short answer to your question is Yes.

However, I would suggest that you do a couple more things and let me look at your log.

Download HijackThis from Here .
  • If using Internet Explorer, Please select RUN
  • If Using Firefox, Download to your Desktop and then Double-Click on Icon to start installation.
  • Choose the default location of C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Click the Install button.
  • Accept the license agreement .
  • The progam will place a shortcut on your desktop. This will make it easier for you to access the tool when required.
  • Click Do a system scan and save a log file. A Notepad file will open.
  • To post the text, first you must highlight the entire text and then press the (Ctrl+C) keys which copies it to your clipboard.
  • Now paste the log into this thread using the (Ctrl + V) buttons.

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Also, Please post the Malwarebytes report if you can.
I may as well give you all my logs.

When I tried removing the Need2FindBar this message came up "Error loading c:\PROGRA~1\NEED2F~\BAR\1.bin\Nd2fnBar.dll." Full Tilt-Poker also has a uninstall option in start menu. Will that suffice or is it better to remove from the control panel? On a sidenote are all poker sites to be avoided and how high a risk to they carry?
Equssdico,

Unfortunately alot of poker sites will cause you problems. You can read Poker gamers targeted by a rootkit backdoor regarding the risk involved with visiting the Poker games web sites.

I don't know much about them but two sight considered relatively safe are PokerStars and Pogo.com.

When I tried removing the Need2FindBar this message came up "Error loading c:\PROGRA~1\NEED2F~\BAR\1.bin\Nd2fnBar.dll."

It looks like Mbam already nuked that one as well as Paddy Power Poker.

Full Tilt-Poker also has a uninstall option in start menu. Will that suffice or is it better to remove from the control panel?

Either way is fine.
In Java under temp. internet files should I also untick th box that says " keep temporary files on my computer "? The kaspersky scan is only at 16% after 58 minutes. Should I set its priority to high? Or do I need to turn off all anti-virus programs?
I would just like to express my gratitude for all your help. It is honourable and noble work you and all your team are doing.

Here are those two last scans that you asked for.

Equssdico,

You've got some Malware that comes with KaZaa. I'm assuming that you were using it at one time.

  • Click Start, then Settings, then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, Remove any entry containing "Topsearch"

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
    • O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://kl.bar.need2find.com/KL/menusearch.html?p=KL
      O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {2AB289AE-4B90-4281-B2AE-1F4BB034B647} - (no file)
  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if still present):
C:\Documents and Settings\Martha\Desktop\mny.exe<–This file
C:\Documents and Settings\Michael\Local Settings\Temp\Acr2.tmp<–This file
C:\Program Files\INSTAFINK<–This folder
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\Altnet<–This folder

Don't be concerned if you don't find these folders. It just means that it was already removed in a previous step.

Restart your computer normally.

Please post a new HijackThis log
I could not find any programs containg "Topsearch". But I am certain that I came across some Kazaa folders or files recently. Maybe they have since been removed.

Just wondering would there be a difference whether you rebooted or restarted your computer? Earlier when you asked me to reboot after installing Jave I think I only restarted.

I deleted all the other files that you said to do. There was also a "…\Temp\Acr3.tmp along with the "…\Temp\Acr2.tmp".
Should I leave that one?

I also have this file " C:\WINDOWS\Temp\Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 08 Demo "

I want to delete this as it takes up 1G. Will deleting this to recycle bin be the best way of removing it and freeing up all the space? Or will a back up still be kept in the " Volume Information System " Folder?

Equssdico,

Rebooted and restarted achieve the same purpose.

I deleted all the other files that you said to do. There was also a "…\Temp\Acr3.tmp along with the "…\Temp\Acr2.tmp".

Please delete it.
Go ahead and delete the "Tiger Woods" file while you are in there.

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Download ERUNT from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click erunt.zip, choose Extract All… and follow the prompts to unzip the program
  • Open the erunt folder on your Desktop and double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note:
The backups can be restored from here:
C:\windows\ERDNT\\ERDNT.exe

Please open Notepad

  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad.exe in the Run Box.
Copy and Paste everything from the Quote box into Notepad:

    REGEDIT4

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{2AB289AE-4B90-4281-B2AE-1F4BB034B647}]

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html]

Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4
Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file.

Go to File > Save As
    Save File name as Fix.reg
Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your desktop.

Close Notepad, and double-click Fix.reg on your Desktop. When it asks if you want to merge the info to the registry, hit YES/OK. Reboot the computer.

Please post a new HijackThis log.
For the file " fix.reg " I assumed the encoding is ANSI. It seemed to work anyway.

Should I now delete this file from the desktop?

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls

Keep Microsoft Windows Updated - This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. The easiest way to do this is to turn on Automatic Updates. Do this by:
  • From your desktop, right-click on My Computer,
  • click on Properties
  • Select the Automatic Updates tab
  • Click on Automatic
  • Click on Apply button
  • Click on OK to exit.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol - This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software.
Winpatrol

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:

Please respond back to let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise I'll close this thread Resolved.

[*]Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

This was the only one that I needed to change.

I also have the file in file documents and settings with a certficate icon called " 53478031 " with security certificate written underneath that number. In it's properties it says that it opens with a crypto shell extension. Is this something to be worried about?

I don't think that I am running the original Windows XP that came with the computer, as I had to get if fixed once, and the guy who did might have used one of his own software cds.
