One was in Documents and Settings entitled GOOL and one was in the Registry, also entitled GOOL with 2 other entries with it in Registry. HELP! I We fixed it with MBAM, rebooted and are running it again now. New HJT and MBAM log to follow. MUCH thanks ANYBODY who can help us! :pullhair:

Posted yesterday at noon:

Good Morning,

I am helping a friend who downloaded a game and got a bad trojan on his computer. I told him to go to this site and you guys would fix him up. He is on Windows XP Home. I had him download HJT and MBAM, run them and boy, he got a lot of stuff off of here. But I am not sure if we got it all. We also have pesky IE pop ups that pop up on his screen about every 5 minutes that we can't stop. I have blocked all pop ups in IE but they still come up. We did the Registry Seeker and ran Spybot (found a lot of stuff) but since I am a novice, I wanted to post here so an expert could take a look at it. Here is the HJT log:

Like me, he doesn't really know anything about computers, just likes to check email and play his games. There is probably a lot of junk on here that could be deleted. We did install CCleaner and cleared out all of his cookies, temp internet files, etc. What do you think? MUCH thanks!

James

We did a Search on GOOL (trojan) and found it. It wouldn't let us delete it at first, but after running MBAM a second time, we were able to successfully delete it. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated as you guys and this forum are the best! MUCH thanks!

James

Hi Keej3,

I am mschroe919 from before, I will be looking at your log of a friends. I need to look at it and I will be back.
Please tell me what the pc is doing.

First lets take and reinstall your HiJackThis.exe
to do so we have to go to add/remove and remove the HJT first

THEN

We need it in a stand alone folder:

this isn't good C:\Documents and Settings\joseph stembridge\Desktop\HiJackThis.exe

After old one removed do this:

Link to Hijack This

HERE:

Important Read:
we need to change location of HJT

when you download new version it will automaticaly go to:

C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.exe

once it is in that location we have to go there and change its name (some viruses and trojans hide when HJT is brought up)

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Close HijackThis and rename it.

Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.exe

Right click on HijackThis.exe and select Rename.
Type in sniper.exe and press Enter
Right-click on sniper.exe
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button
HijackThis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
Copy and then paste the log in your post.

Even though we have renamed HijackThis to sniper, we will still refer to it as HijackThis or HJT
I will help as soon as I see your new log from your new location.

Let me know how the pc is behaving , I will wait for new log.

Hi Mschroe, :wavey:

I posted my thread yesterday to you specifically but I guess you didn't see it. Glad to work with you again! I deleted and redownloaded HJT and then changed the name to sniper. Here is the new log:

I am helping a friend who had some bad trojans. Also, he had IE popups coming up about every 5 minutes or so. Please read the beginning of this thread for more details and also to see what we have done on here already. I learned well! :yeah: I have been raving to everyone I have come in contact with about this site! GREAT to "see" you again and I will wait to hear from you!

Hi Keej3

It apears that there are 2 Anti Viruses running.

1- AVG7 (which is out of date ) should be AVG 8.0
and
2- McAfee SecurityCenter

This isn't good cause they but one another, please choose one to keep.

Show hidden files, Here is how:

Good morning Mschroe, :wavey: I did all of the above. I ran all of the updates on AVG and I uninstalled McAfee. The McAfee was expired so I took the free updates on AVG, Problem is, I can't get the McAfee shield to go away on the bottom Start toolbar. I went through and deleted all things McAfee but it is still there. When I hover the mouse over it, it says Windows Security Center but it is the McAfee shield. Not sure how to get rid of it. Is the AVG a good AV or would it be better to enable the Spybot Tea Timer for protection? IS the Spybot Tea Timer an AV protector? The IE pop ups have stopped. :woot: I think yesterday when I searched and deleted GOOL, that is what corrected that. I also have not detected any more trojans on here. I think the computer could be a little bit faster but not sure because he lives in the country and only has dial up while I have it connected right now to Windstream DSL. What do you think? MUCH thanks! James
Hi Keej3

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.

* Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
* In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
* Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
* Expand the "Tools" menu.
* Click "Resident".
* Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
* In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

I don't see where you have teaTimer running anyway

But if you do, complete the above.

Please don't delete anything till I ask you. By you deleting the GOOL, could have presented a problem to the next fix. Deleting it sometimes doesn't always take it out complely. We don't want it back? Also don't run any cleanup programs till I get done. They may effect mine.

Download SDFix

HERE:

and save it to your Desktop.
Run the SDFix.exe by double clicking on it.
Allow it to install into the default location which is normally c:\SDFix

Now please reboot your computer into Safe Mode
Here is how

* Click Start.
* Select Shutdown.
* Select Restart and click OK.
* During restart, hold down the F8 key on your keyboard until the Windows Startup menu appears.
* If your PC starts beeping then release the key for a few seconds before holding it down again.
* Select Safe Mode from the Startup menu, and press the Enter button on your keyboard.
* Windows should start in Safe Mode. If Windows doesn't restart in Safe Mode then please try again.

When you have booted into safe mode, open the C:\SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry entries found and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
Attach the Report.txt file to your next message.

If this error message is displayed when running SDFix:
The command prompt has been disabled by your administrator. Press any key to continue . . .
Please goto Start Menu > Run > then copy and paste the following line:
%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\swreg IMPORT %systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\Enable_Command_Prompt.reg
Press OK then run SDFix again
If the Command Prompt window flashes on then off again on XP or Windows2000
Please goto Start Menu > Run > then copy and paste the following line:
%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\FixPath.exe /Q
Reboot and then run SDFix again
If SDFix still doesnt run, check the %comspec% variable
Goto Start Menu > Right click My Computer > click properties > click Advanced Click Environment Variables and check that the ComSpec variable points to cmd.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe
SDFix uses ERUNT to create a registry backup in this location: %SystemRoot%\ERUNT\SDFix\
Please when done post the Report.txt as well as another HJT log
good luck mschroe919
Hi Mschroe,

I disabled Tea Timer the other day when I started looking at my friends computer. I was just curious if it was good protection or if AVG was better. I did all of the above. No problems at all running SDFix. Here are my new logs.
