My PC running Windows XP Pro is running so slowly as to be unuseable. I followed all the steps in the self-help section of the forum titled "Before Posting a Hijackthis Log" and problem persists. This problem happened all of a sudden - one day it was running perfectly, the next day it would take 15 minutes to load Firefox, to open My Computer, or any other routine function.

Would you please analyze my hijackthis log?

Thank you.

Leslie

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

I'm not seeing anything bad in your log.

1. Have you reset any external modem/routher by powering them off?
2. Is your Symantec / Nortons a paid for version?

If you've already run ATF Cleaner and Malwarebytes, let me know.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
LDTate, I first want to let you know how much I appreciate this work that you're doing in helping me and others sort our their computer messes. The hijackthis log that I sent you was done after I ran erunt, atf-cleaner and Malawarebytes Anti-Malware. My Symantec is a paid-for version from my employer. Something happened with it a few days ago. I had been using their Symantec Endpoint Protection software, a combination antivirus/antispyware program, for several months. A few days ago it started giving me error messages that there were "problems" with it, and I should try to reinstall. It hadn't been able to scan in about a week. I went to my employer's website to download it so I could re-install it, and that software was no longer offered. Rather, Symantec Antivirus Corporate Ed. Version 10 was available. I went to uninstall Endpoint protection but could not, because "Liveupdate" was running continuously. I had to stop Liveupdate from running. I stopped various services related to Endpoint Protection and Liveupdate, and I was then able to uninstall first Endpoint Protection, then Liveupdate. I rebooted, then installed Symantec Antivirus corporate version 10. It was after I did this that the PC, which had been very slow, became so slow as to be unworkable. I just tried turning PC on. Got the welcome screen, but no icons. Green light in cpu that blinks to show that things are happening is not blinking. After 7 minutes, I turned pc off by holding power button down. Tried to turn on again. No dice. Was able to boot up in safe mode with networking. However, to access the internet, I normally have to open my Linksys Network Monitor by right-clicking it and tell it to let Windows Wireless Configuration handle the wireless networking. When I right-click on it, I am not given this option. So, I am running in safe mode, minus networking, which booted up quite quickly. I am using another computer to write this. I can't run another hijackthis log because my pc is not reading my usb ports so i can't save the log file to my thumb drive. Lesli
IMO, it appears Symantec is the root of your issues. I would uninstall it and get a free one, that I will give you a link to. You'll need to uninstall Symantecs first.

This is what I suggest you do this:

To completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus?
Problem: The solution to many problems with Symantec AntiVirus is to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus, then re-install. You can use these instructions to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus.

Solution: In order to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus and all related components you need to follow these instructions.
Note: This procedure will remove all Symantec products, not just Symantec AntiVirus.

1.Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel
2.In the control panel double-click on Add / Remove Programs
3.Look through the list of installed programs for any item that says either "Norton" or "Symantec" or "LiveUpdate". (for example "Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition" or "Norton AntiVirus 2000")
4.For each "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate" item, select the item and click Add / Remove. Follow the instructions, and click Yes or Yes to all when prompted.
When you are done there should be no items in the list that say "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate".
5.Click OK to close the Add / Remove Programs window.
6.Reboot your computer if it hasn't already automatically rebooted.
7.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus (or c:\Program Files\Norton) folder.
8.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec folder.
9.Delete the c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.

If uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus using Add / Remove Programs does not work, you can use the directions on this Symantec website to manually remove all elements of Symantec Antivirus from your computer.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…005033108162039
DownLoad for your version of Windows & save to your desktop as it says)
Click on Norton Removal Tool and follow the instructions.

After the above:

Get a free one.

Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus
http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/downl…_antivirus.html

Or

avast! 4
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Run a full scan and let us know what it finds along with a new HijackThis log.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment
I am unable to uninstall Symantec in safe mode, get "unable to access Windows Installer service" Tried one more time to boot up in normal mode - won't do it..
I am unable to uninstall Symantec in safe mode, get "unable to access Windows Installer service" Tried one more time to boot up in normal mode - won't do it..
click Start> Run> type in Msconfig tap enter key.
look in the Startup. Uncheck everything that shows Symantec, Nortons or Live Update

After you uncheck it and rebooting, you'll be using Selective startup.
When you see the box popup that tells you that, just put a Check in the Box to not show that when you startup.

Can you startup in Normal Mode now?
I was able to uninstall all Symantec stuff after going into msconfig and following your instructions. I then installed Avira and ran a scan. Here's the log:

Computer seems to be running pretty well right now. There is one question I have. When I go into msconfig again, I still see some vestiges of Symantec, which are unchecked. See attached screenshot. Does this indicate that Symantec is still on my computer.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

Make sure you are disconnected from the net

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
  • If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.
Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.
Well, I got through running combofix. I got a log, then I rebooted. First reboot icons wouldn't come on the desktop. Held power button to shut off, then booted again in safe mode. Went to msconfig, startup tab, looked around. Symantec all gone, but noticed an entry for Adaware, which I thought I got rid of ages ago. Went into services and saw that it was running, so I stopped and disabled that service. Rebooted. This time, and for 2 more reboots, icons appear on screen, but except for my linksys network adapter icon, no other icons appear in the tray on the lower right of the screen. When i hold mouse over the tray there is an hour glass - it's been going like that for 20 minutes now. I can get windows task manager up, and in the process tab 47 processes are flat-lined. There is no movement at all in the Mem usage numbers. That's where I'm at. Leslie
If you do Alt/Ctrl/Del can you select reboot from there? If so, try that. If still no good, unplug the internet connection, reboot and see what happens.
When I ctrl-alt-del to restart, PC freezes on "Saving your settings". Does this both when connected to net and when not connected.I then have to resort to holding down power button. If I reboot into safe mode, and then try to restart the normal way, will get past "Saving your settings", but after restarting it only get so far as to show icons on desktop, but freezes when trying to load icons into system tray.
Last known configuration did it. Here are my logs.
