I started getting warnings on my comp stating that my Windows automatic update wasn't turned on. I also started getting a window opening saying I needed to download updates for Antivirus 2009. I tried using my comps Restore function, and it seemed to have helped somewhat. However, I still get a warning (in my toolbar) saying my antivirus is no longer available and that my automatic updates are still turned off. Also, I've began getting windows popping up for downloads of registry cleaners/maximizers, etc. Besides all of that, I'm also geting windows opening (apparently from my browser being redirected maybe) for different ads, services, etc. Please if anyone out there could possibly help me straighten this all out I would greatly appreciate it. I've used your services once before (a long time ago) on another computer, when a browser hijacker had been downloaded on it, and was impressed with all of the help I received then. Thank you.

Got rid of a fair bit there!

Please uninstall the following programs:

LimeWire 4.18.6
Viewpoint Media Player

  • Go to Start then Settings, then Control Panel
  • Choose Add or Remove Programs
  • Remove all of the above
Limewire can be used as a conduit for downloading malware, and is one of the surest ways of getting infected.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version (Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7) for your computer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Please read this Combofix tutorial before continuing, then follow the instructions below.

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

Next, download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System.

[external image: Posted Image]

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

[external image: Posted Image]

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

[external image: Posted Image]

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Save this log to your desktop as Combofix.txt and post it in your next reply.

(Note: Combofix will also save the report to C:\Combofix.txt)

Things are looking much better now! How is you machine running?

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

Folder::
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\LimeWire

DirLook::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\NtmsData
C:\WINDOWS\system32\zep
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tcon
C:\WINDOWS\system32\SP6
C:\WINDOWS\system32\EV02
C:\WINDOWS\system32\eib
C:\TEMP\xp34

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

[external image: Posted Image]

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the Combofix.txt report into your next reply.

Glad to hear that the machine is running better now! :thumbup:

OK, there are a few files that I want to check out.

Please go here to upload these files for analysis.
  • In the email address, please insert your email address
  • Copy and paste the link to this thread:
    http://forums.whatthetech.com/Having_problems_with_my_computer_Pop_ups_warnings_etc_t95778.html
  • In Files to submit, 1., copy and paste this filepath: C:\WINDOWS\system32\eib\AWID24U14.exe
  • In Files to submit, 2., copy and paste this filepath: C:\WINDOWS\system32\EV02\EV022328.exe
  • In Files to submit, 3., copy and paste this filepath: C:\WINDOWS\system32\SP6\DK7622Z.exe
  • In Files to submit, 4., copy and paste this filepath: C:\WINDOWS\system32\zep\cls5829M.exe
  • In Files to submit, 5., copy and paste this filepath: C:\WINDOWS\system32\brcgxs.dll
  • In the comments, please mention that I asked you to upload these files.
  • Click on Send File
If these files are found to be dangerous, they will also be submitted to the AV companies to help others who are infected by them. It may take a day or so to get a response from UploadMalware. If they email you, please paste the contents of that email in your next reply, so we can see what our course of action should be.

Regards,
RatHat
RatHat, I copied and pasted the files you told me to in your last post, and have just now sent them in to UploadMalware.com. As soon as I hear from them I'll post the results here for you to look over. Once again I want to thank you for helping me out with these problems, you guys ROCK!!!! for helping out like you do. Keep up the good work!!!!!!!
Hi there,

Being impatient, I had a chat with the people at UploadMalware and got the results of the scans. One file didn't upload properly, so could you send it again?

Please go back to UploadMalware and submit the following file.
  • Enter your email address.
  • Copy and paste the link to this thread
  • In Files to submit, 1., browse for this filename: C:\WINDOWS\system32\brcgxs.dll
  • In the comments, please mention that I asked you to upload this file
  • Click on Send File
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now the other files all came back bad, so lets get rid of them with ComboFix, and also send them to the writer of ComboFix so he can include them in future versions of the tool.
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the code box below into it:
http://forums.whatthetech.com/Having_problems_with_my_computer_Pop_ups_warnings_etc_t95778.html
Collect::[4]
C:\WINDOWS\system32\eib\AWID24U14.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\EV02\EV022328.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\SP6\DK7622Z.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\zep\cls5829M.exe
Save this as CFScript.txt
[external image: Posted Image]
Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.
**Note**
When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box–do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.
  • A browser will open.
  • Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now lets get rid of the folders they came in along with a couple of other useless folders.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :files
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\zep
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tcon
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\SP6
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\EV02
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\eib
    C:\TEMP\xp34

    :commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Regards,
RatHat
Hello RatHat :D , I just read your last post and have tried resubmitting that file you told me to (C:\WINDOWS\system32\brcgxs.dll), and tried sending it to UploadMalware.com. However, I keep getting the following message: Your file (brcgxs.dll) was 0 bytes and could not be uploaded. Please try disabling any anti-virus software and trying the upload again.Your file () was 0 bytes and could not be uploaded. Please try disabling any anti-virus software and trying the upload again. I went in and disabled my McAfee Anti-virus and made sure that my Windows Security Anti-Virus was disabled too, but I keep getting that same message from UploadMalware.com. Please advise me as to what to try next. I'm going to wait to finish the rest of your instructions until I hear from you. Thanks once again for all of your help :)
Hi there,

Lets just kill it, I know it is going to be bad.

To do this we will change the Combofix script slightly. Instead of using the one I posted above, use this one instead:

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the code box below into it:
http://forums.whatthetech.com/Having_problems_with_my_computer_Pop_ups_warnings_etc_t95778.html

Collect::[4]
C:\WINDOWS\system32\eib\AWID24U14.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\EV02\EV022328.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\SP6\DK7622Z.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\zep\cls5829M.exe

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\brcgxs.dll
Save this as CFScript.txt

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

**Note**

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box–do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.
  • A browser will open.
  • Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file.

Then continue with OTMoveIt3, and post me both logs.

Regards,
RatHat
