Ron K. long time to chat sir.

I was skimming through the content and thought of just something…
Are you using Spybot-Search&Destroy by any chance?

Can you disable NetZero's Pop-up blocker and see if that resolves the problem?
The Netzero icon on your taskbar looks like the "Hi-Speed" version of NetZero. If I'm correct, that's much (maybe not) faster than Netzero Premium (I was a user) at a little more price.

I was a bit curious to why it would be "slow" if Netzero claimed to be Hi-Speed.
-
IE 7 is fine on your computer, no need to uninstall.
Does Windows Defender tell you specifically what the change is? What have you done with the prompt? Allowed it? Denied it?
~~
My hypothesis was that the images are probably "ads" or advertisements. Those red "X" boxes or a picture format icon (triangle, square, and circle) at the top left hand corner usually means that the image has not been loaded/not displaying correctly/ or the link to it is broken (like it doesn't exist anymore).

Try to disable the pop-up blocker. As far as I know Spybot may or may not block ads/images like that. Usually those are ads (that you see and are having problems with).

Try this: All of the Security Zones (I may be repeating what the others said) should be set to Default. Same goes to the Advanced tab. Sorry if it takes some time to load Ron (around 200KB).

It's not NetZero that's slow, it's their dialiup. You'll never find a dialiup that goes faster than 20kb per second. When they say "our dialups faster", that could be a difference of only a few kilobytes, so it's still extremely slow.
Thanks Vectris. Learned something new about dial-up T.T. 56kbps dial-up would go to 6KB/sec… So Ron's dial-up connection (via. telephone line?) would be 140-150kbps.
:wavey: This is going to be a LONG answer to 2 people…..1st; Vectris: Your 3:55 post….The first link :inetexplorer.mvps ,etc, the animation IS on…..On the 2nd link ,I downloaded ERUNT & installed it…I don't know what the heck to do with it next , but my files, etc are apparently backed up…..Now,drragostea:…Yes ,I have SpyBot Search & Destroy , but I NEVER get any popups from it…I also have Avast!…I can & have turned it off to see if that helped…NO go….The NetZero popup blocker doesn't make any difference either, on or off….You said:….""The Netzero icon on your taskbar looks like the "Hi-Speed" version of NetZero. If I'm correct, that's much (maybe not) faster than Netzero Premium (I was a user) at a little more price.""…NetZero has HighSpeed 3G, which I opted out of due to the $5.00 a mo. extra.& to me it was like putting Cadillac tires on a Volkswagen Beetle….Windows Defender DOES tell me exactly what the change is & I can opt to "Permit" or "Deny"…Some I have permitted & some I have denied….You said:….""Try to disable the pop-up blocker. FROM Ron.M….Whaaat da heck????….drragostea, you said:…""Thanks Vectris. @drragostea I'm confused too, you lost me as soon as you went from 56kbps to 6kb… 6kb would most likely be rons average connection speed, yes…

@ron

Did you try everything in the fix? Here's a quote of the last part, there was a ton of stuff and most of it involved changing the registry around, ERUNT will back up your registry incase something is damaged and you need to restore everything. Just run ERUNT and follow the prompts to back up your registry.

Try running the following commands from start/run with all programmes shut down:

regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll (all versions) … and then

regsvr32.exe /i shdoc401.dll (with IE5 up)

If using WindowsME run this command:

regsvr32.exe /i thumbvw.dll

Press enter and reboot after each command.

After a wait you will get a *succeeded* dialogue box after each command. Click ok, reboot and see if things are fixed.

Note: These commands reset a lot of file associations back to the standard defaults, so some image viewer programmes may complain - but that's an easy fix - you can pick and choose your file associations later.

If still no luck, have a look at your Registry. Please, back up your registry first, and if you are really unsure, get someone who has a bit of experience to help you out.

Open regedit.exe and navigate to

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg (there is a dot before jpg)
For Content Type is should say "image/jpeg"
Do the same for .jpe and .jpeg

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif (don't forget the dot)
For Content Type is should say "image/gif"

LAST RESORT:

There are regular reports where people are unable to get graphics back despite our best efforts. This may be related to a corruption in the registry. The following is taken from a relevant knowledge base article:
http://support.microsoft.com?scid=kb;EN-US;Q283807

"…If the problem [no graphics] is not resolved, a file or registry key required to display the Web page with the appropriate character set may be missing or damaged. To resolve this problem, restore Windows from a complete system backup or reinstall (or repair) Windows. If you are running Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition or Microsoft Windows XP, you may be able to resolve this issue without restoring or reinstalling Windows by using the System Restore utility to return your computer to a previous working state….

Note that in some cases you may also be able to resolve this problem by manually editing the registry. For example, if the 28591 String value is missing from the following registry key, a Web page that is encoded for the Western European (ISO) code page might not display any images:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
Nls\CodePage

The value for this registry key should be set to the name of the appropriate code page file in your Windows\System or Windows\System32 folder. For the Western European (ISO) code page, this value should be either Cp_28591.nls (Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition) or C_28591.NLS (Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP). For additional information about the character sets that are supported by Internet Explorer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default….charset4.asp.… "

I suspect that a corruption within that key of the registry could also lead to IE losing encoding settings. So, if your encoding keeps changing, or you continue to be unable to see graphics despite your best efforts, I must repeat Microsoft's advice and ask you to repair/reinstall Windows.

*IF* you are an experienced computer user, and *IF* you are familiar with the registry I now have some txt files that can be converted to reg files and imported into Windows XP/NT4.0/2000 or Win98/ME. You must make sure that the NLS file referred to exists on your computer before importing the reg file, and you MUST back up your registry and MUST know how to restore it if things go wrong.

Western European (ISO) encoding
Windows 98/M[]E
Windows XP/NT4.0/2000

Western European (Windows) encoding
Windows 98/M[]E
Windows XP/NT4.0/2000

PLEASE BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE IMPORTING THE ABOVE FILES. Extract the txt files and change the file type extension to reg before importing the files.

If the following registry key exists {1F48AA48-C53A-4E21-85E7-AC7CC6B5FFA8} rename the DLL file to which the CSLID points.

If the following registry keys exist, try exporting them (just in case) and then delete the originals:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\ftp
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\http

Perhaps the last part you can skip because it says it's for experienced users only, so be careful with this.

…which I opted out of due to the $5.00 a mo. extra.& to me it was like putting Cadillac tires on a Volkswagen Beetle….

Haha, nice one there. Good comparison. So… you don't have Netzero's (what they claim) "Hi-Speed" do you? So I'm assuming you're still stuck at 56kbps.
Here's some geek stuff about the KB and kbps:
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-kbps.htm
-
Don't want to make this longer, so I'll explain it briefly. When you browse and download in reality you are getting 56kbps. Divide that by 8 and you get the download speed. It would be 7, but now it's six due to variables. So the next time you see a big number in "kbps" format, divide that by 8 and you get roughly how much speed when you browse.

So that's what I'm thinking. I'm not so familiar with the registry part of this problem, so I'll have to leave it to Vectris or someone else such as a Tech Member.

The Netzero pop-up blocker seems futile to me (if I were using it) and Spybot does not seem to be the culprit.

Ron M., have you tried the Mozilla Firefox browser (alternative to IE) and see if it works?

Can you disable the Immunization feature and the SDHelper in Spybot (Advanced Mode) and see if this helps?
Vectris:….I thought I wrote a book, YOU published one ! !.. …RE:…"regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll (all versions)"…I ran it & got the "succeded" message….Then Windows Defender popped up with a change registry screen…I permitted the change…..Down in the lower part of the notice there was the following registry changes noted:….Original—>res://ieframe.dll/navcancl.htm…The new is:—>res://shdoclc.dll/navcancl.htm…..I then rebooted….Then I ran:….'regsvr32.exe /i shdoc401.dll (with IE5 up)' …When that finished I got the following:….(verbatim)…"LoadLibrary("shdoc401.dll") failed…The specified module could not be found"…. No need to shout Ron M. …
I was just saying that based on a anecdote (shapes). I don't think you get it about Spybot. It doesn't have to be running to provide Immunization. Based on what you said… you're saying that Spybot does not give you Immunization when it is closed?

The Immunization feature is passive, Spybot does not need to be running.
Ron I see, I wasn't sure if you did everything because your first post didn't address it as much. Thank you for making it clear in your second post. Our options are pretty small now, unless we can come up with something I suggest a restore or new browser. If you didn't have this problem before, you may want to try a system restore to a point before the problem occured.
drragostea:…You said:….""No need to shout Ron M. …"" If that's shouting , then you had better look at some of my other posts…I use caps for emphesis , & not to hurt anyones feelings.period….If I have , then I'm truly SORRY for it….You said:….""Based on what you said… you're saying that Spybot does not give you Immunization when it is closed?""… I know that the immunization is working all the time…That's not (notice I did not shout) what I said or meant….What I said/meant was that , I'm not scanning while online….I have used the immunization feature…I will check into disabling it today…..The reason I ruled out SpyBot is , because I've had it forever & it never (would like to shout "never") caused a problem…..Thank you sincerely for your explanation, etc….Now Vectris: …( & drragostea )….This morning I tried 3 restores….The first 2 failed for some unknown reason…The 3rd time it worked…There is some , I stress some , improvement….I have a gut feeling that one of these two is the cause of it—->> Previous quote:….""I went to your 2nd link & WAALAA I think we FOUND the problem..
