Thanx for the good word and the reply.
What you told me worked but The icon was still there; I ckicked exit which I hope gets rid of it for good so I will have to see when I reboot..
Tween birth and death, you have to keep punching.
Both pc's are xp sp3
I was able to remove the icon with a reboot with the desktop but my laptop is stubborn. The icon is still there.
I tried enabling it and ran it rebooting then not allowing it, runnung it and rebooting but the icon is still there.
Is hthere another way to get this done? The machines are set up the same so I can't understand why it works for the desktop but not the laptop.
Thank you.
Absolutely. It worked for the desktop but not for the laptop. Both are sp3 with no differences I know about.
I wish I could solve it.
I keep trying the process but it gets tiring as it takes a while like a scan to index then undo it.
I always see the box on the bottom and it is unchecked but the icon remains which is a pain. I have not forgotten to reboot after any system change.
Any ideas or referrals?
Thank you
Hello
I tried the instructions you gave me twice but on each reboot, the icon still appeared. I noticed on the log on tab there was a box that gave the opportunity to disable… which I tried but that did not work either.
The services indicate indexing to be disabled from the previous manual setting.
I did find at least temporary help by >msconfig>startup>uncheck 'windows search'.
Is this an ok uncheck in startup and do you think it will fix the issue?
Odd that this problem did not exist with the desktop yet only with the lap top.
Both are Dell, Desk = Dimension 4600 and lap =Dell Inspiron 5150 and both xp home sp3.
Thanx for the help and I look forward to hearing from you.
Please right click on the index icon > exit in the taskbar before doing anything else.
Then follow again my previous post step by step suggestions making sure you click apply >okay > exit (last three instructions) then reboot. If the indexing icon reappears, I am afraid I am all out of ideas. Another volunteer may come by to give their opinion, I do hope so.
In msconfig, disabling any item is only temporary in my experience. If you use Google Search I would uninstall Windows Search through Add and Remove as I did on my systems……I did not need two search facilities.
I apologize as I thought my last post indicated it was fixed.
I think your instructions were the right ones but I did not 'exit' the icon first and probably did not follow thru properly when leaving such as apply, ok, and use 'file' to exit.
All is well now thanx to you.
