This tool needs to be run from Safemode to be effective so download it to your desktop then boot to Safemode to run it

To Enter Safemode

  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.
First thanks for helping me. Now I did as asked but the first time I ran SDFIX it did not bave as you described I ended up having to reboot from task manager but I did log it and then I tried a second time and it ran perfect so I will also send that log as well as the hijackthis log.

Falconi, You have a virus in your MBR (Master Boot Record) this is the list of files that boot or start your system. This is a new one on me so I am having someone else look at so we can fix it. Hang in , will be back soon. Ken
Hello,

We have to fix your Master Boot Record, before we do I need you to install the Recovery Console.

We need to run ComboFix. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.
Falconi,

Are you having problems with the Recovery Console?? If so this may be an easier way for you to install it.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop. <—Don't run it yet

Go to Microsoft's website Here
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Windows XP SP2 <— This will work

Download the file & save it as its originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

[external image: Posted Image]

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Please do not reboot your machine until we have reviewed the log.
I am sorry I had to work today and then go out to a dinner date. I downloaded the 2 programs and did as asked but after combo fix was done it auto rebooted and warned me not to do it manually so I thought it might be just as bad tp stop it so here is the log and I will not reboot until I here from you.

Hi,

This will only take a few minutes.

Your should still have mbr.exe on your desktop. Right click on it and select CUT, then go to My Computer> C: > Windows folder and paste it in by clicking on the Edit tab and select paste.

Click Start>Run
Type in mbr.exe -f <—there is a space between the e and - <—this is important
Click on ok and ok your way out

Reboot your computer and then click on mbr.exe in your windows folder and copy and paste it in for me to see
ok I did as asked hopefully its right. here's the log and by the way can you tell me how to change the clock from military time to 12 hr clock.

Falconi,

You have done well, the virus is gone from the MBR

C:\Program Files\FrostWire <—-You need to uninstall this and not use torrent programs like this. This has become the latest avenue of attacks by malware writers and if you keep using P2P (File Sharing ) programs like this you will almost certainly become infected again. If you look back at your Comboxfix log under the firewall policy you will see that your firewall is giving complete access for this program to the internet to download anything it wishes. You can uninstall it via the Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

I would like you to read this.

P2P (File Sharing ) programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.

This article from InfoWorld illustrates the dangers of a poorly configured P2P program.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/…ID-theft_1.html

When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

Post a new HJT log and lets make sure all is ok and when we uninstall Combofix it should change your clock back to normal time, if not I will show you how to reset it,
thank you
